  • In this paper, the sensitivity of massive antenna arrays and digital beamforming to radio frequency (RF) chain in-phase quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance is studied and analyzed. The analysis shows that massive antenna arrays are increasingly sensitive to such RF chain imperfections, corrupting heavily the radiation pattern and beamforming capabilities. Motivated by this, novel RF-aware digital beamforming methods are then developed for automatically suppressing the unwanted effects of the RF I/Q imbalance without separate calibration loops in all individual receiver branches. More specifically, the paper covers closed-form analysis for signal processing properties as well as the associated radiation and beamforming properties of massive antenna arrays under both systematic and random RF I/Q imbalances. All analysis and derivations in this paper assume ideal signals to be circular. The well-known minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer and a widely-linear (WL) extension of it, called WL-MVDR, are analyzed in detail from the RF imperfection perspective, in terms of interference attenuation and beamsteering. The optimum RF-aware WL-MVDR beamforming solution is formulated and shown to efficiently suppress the RF imperfections. Based on the obtained results, the developed solutions and in particular the RF-aware WL-MVDR method can provide efficient beamsteering and interference suppressing characteristics, despite of the imperfections in the RF circuits. This is seen critical especially in the massive antenna array context where the cost-efficiency of individual RF chains is emphasized.

  • Exposure analysis is a critical component of determining the health impact of pollutants. Global positioning systems (GPS) could be useful in developing time-location information for use in exposure analysis. This study compares four low cost GPS receivers with data logging capability (Garmin 60, Garmin Forerunner 201, GeoStats GeoLogger and Skytrx minitracker MT4100) in terms of accuracy, precision, and ease of use. The accuracy of the devices was determined at two known National Geodetic Survey points. The coordinates logged by the devices were compared when the devices were carried while walking and driving. The Garmin 60 showed better accuracy and precision than the GeoLogger when they were placed at the geodetic points. The Forerunner and Skytrx did not record when they were kept stationary. When the subject wore the devices while walking, the location of the devices differed by about 8 m on average between any two device combinations involving the four devices. The distance between the coordinates logged by the devices decreased when the devices were carried with their antennas facing the sky. All the devices showed similar routes when they were used in a car. All the devices except the Forerunner had satisfactory signal reception when they were worn and when they were carried in the car. The GeoLogger is less comfortable for the subject because of specific wearing requirements. This evaluation found that the Garmin 60 and the Skytrx may be useful in personal exposure analysis studies to record time-location data.

  • In our previous studies (Chae et al., 1990; Chae et a1., 1993), we found that a phytochrome signal was clearly connected with the change in cytosolic free $Ca^{2+}$ concentration ($[Ca^{2+}]_i$) in oat cells. It was determined that the $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ change occured both by mobilization out of the intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ store and by influx from the medium. The specific aim of this work is to elucidate the processes connecting $Ca^{2+}$ mobilization and influx. The cells treated with thapsigargin (increasing $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ by inhibition of the $Ca^{2+}$-ATPase in the calcium pool) in the presence of external $Ca^{2+}$ showed the same increasing pattern (sustained increasing shape) of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ as that measured in animal cells. Red light irradiation after thapsigargin treatment did not increase $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ These results suggest that thapsigargin also acts specifically in the processes of mobilization and influx of $Ca^{2+}$ in oat cells. When the cells were treated with TEA ($K^+$ channel blocker), changes in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ were drastically reduced in comparison with that measured in the absence of TEA. The results suggest that the change in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ due to red light irradiation is somehow related with $K^+$ channel opening to change membrane potential. The membrane potential change due to $K^+$ influx might be the critical factor in opening a voltage-dependent calcium channel for $Ca^{2+}$ influx.

  • Real slug and bubbly flows were measured using a three-ring impedance meter that can efficiently measure the void fraction of two-phase flows in a tube. First, the fitting curves between the signal from the impedance meters and the void fraction were found. The impedance meter had different fitting curves for slug and bubbly flows that had the same void fraction. An impedance meter should choose one of the two fitting curves according to the flow pattern, and the flow patterns can be recognized using the measured void fraction. The velocities and sizes of the bubbles were calculated using the void fraction curves measured by two impedance meters.

  • Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare extramedullary tumor composed of immature granulocytic precursors. Usually, granulocytic sarcoma is seen in association with acute myeloid leukemia, or other myeloproliferative disorders. Rarely, it may manifest as a primary presentation before the onset of systemic disease in acute myeloid leukemia. The clinical suspicion of granulocytic sarcoma based on imaging findings is important for the management of the patient especially when systemic disease of acute myeloid leukemia is not confirmed as in our case. We report the MR findings of a granulocytic sarcoma in the left leg mimicking hemorrhagic abscess in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia. We believe that MRI can be a helpful diagnostic method of making a differential diagnosis of granulocytic sarcoma in a patient with leukemia, and this can be done by analyzing the signal intensity and the enhancement pattern.

  • We provide a method to infer finger flexing motions using a 4-channel surface electromyogram (sEMG). Surface EMGs are harmless to the human body and easily acquired. However, they do not reflect the activity of specific nerves or muscles, unlike invasive EMGs. On the other hand, the non-invasive type is difficult to use for discriminating various motions while using only a small number of electrodes. Surface EMG data in this study were obtained from four electrodes placed around the forearm. The motions were the flexion of the thumb, index, middle, ring, and little linger. One subject was trained with these motions and another left was untrained. The maximum likelihood estimation was used to infer the finger motion. Experimental results have showed that this method could be useful for recognizing finger motions. The average accuracy was as high as 95%.

  • Calcium has versatile roles in diverse physiological functions. Among these functions, intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ plays a key role during the secretion of salivary glands. In this review, we introduce the diverse cellular components involved in the saliva secretion and related dynamic intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ signals. Calcium acts as a critical second messenger for channel activation, protein translocation, and volume regulation, which are essential events for achieving the salivary secretion. In the secretory process, $Ca^{2+}$ activates $K^+$ and $Cl^-$ channels to transport water and electrolyte constituting whole saliva. We also focus on the $Ca^{2+}$ signals from intracellular stores with discussion about detailed molecular mechanism underlying the generation of characteristic $Ca^{2+}$ patterns. In particular, inositol triphosphate signal is a main trigger for inducing $Ca^{2+}$ signals required for the salivary gland functions. The biphasic response of inositol triphosphate receptor and $Ca^{2+}$ pumps generate a self-limiting pattern of $Ca^{2+}$ efflux, resulting in $Ca^{2+}$ oscillations. The regenerative $Ca^{2+}$ oscillations have been detected in salivary gland cells, but the exact mechanism and function of the signals need to be elucidated. In future, we expect that further investigations will be performed toward better understanding of the spatiotemporal role of $Ca^{2+}$ signals in regulating salivary secretion.

  • In this Paper, we propose a content-based music information retrieval (MIR) system base on the query-by-example (QBE) method. The proposed system is implemented to retrieve queried music from a dataset where 60 music samples were collected for each of the four genres in Classical, Hiphop. Jazz. and Reck. resulting in 240 music files in database. From each query music signal, the system extracts 60 dimensional feature vectors including spectral centroid. rolloff. flux base on STFT and also the LPC. MFCC and Beat information. and retrieves queried music from a trained database set using Euclidean distance measure. In order to choose optimum features from the 60 dimension feature vectors, SFS method is applied to draw 10 dimension optimum features and these are used for the Proposed system. From the experimental result. we can verify the superior performance of the proposed system that provides success rate of 84% in Hit Rate and 0.63 in MRR which means near 10% improvements over the previous methods. Additional experiments regarding system Performance to random query Patterns (or portions) and query lengths have been investigated and a serious instability problem of system Performance is Pointed out.

  • The main advantage of ESPAR antenna is that ESPAR antenna requires only a single RF chain for reduction of transceiver's hardware complexity, as compared to conventional MIMO system. In conventional MIMO system, each data symbol is mapped to each antenna. But, each data symbol is mapped to each orthogonal basis pattern in ESPAR antenna system. In this paper, we design beamspace MIMO system using ESPAR antenna with single RF chain for MIMO system of low-complexity and low power consumption. And then, we analyze performance of beamspace MIMO according to each PSK modulation. Performance of beamspace MIMO system is similar to performance of conventional MIMO system. As a result of analyzing the performance of beamspace MIMO system using higher-order PSK modulation. we can confirm that performance characteristic of beamspace MIMO system with low complexity and low power consumption is similar to digital communication of signal domain.

  • In this paper, an automatic transmission system of traffic information is presented. Here, a traffic event is defined as an obstacle to an emergency vehicle such as an ambulance or a fire truck. When a traffic event is detected from a video recorded by a black box installed in a vehicle, the implemented system automatically transmits a proof image and corresponding information to the control center through an e-mail. For this purpose, we realize an algorithm of identifying the numbers and a character from the license plate, and an algorithm for determining the occurrence of a traffic event. To report the event, a function for automatic transmission of the text and image files through e-mail and file transfer protocol (FTP) is also appended. Therefore, if the traffic event is extended and applied to the presented system, it will be possible to establish a convenient reporting system for the violation of various traffic regulations. In addition, it will contribute to significantly reduce the number of traffic violations against the regulations.
