  • This study is to explore the causes for weak signal areas and suggest solutions for the problem of weak signal areas through the experiments for location error of satellite navigation system depending on the characteristics of locations. For kinematic point positioning, a moving object can have different number of satellite navigation systems available depending on its location. It has to receive location data from at least four satellite navigation systems for precise point positioning. However, drastic urbanization and poor surroundings have caused greater location error and weak signal areas. To reduce location error and remove the occurrence of weak signal areas, it is necessary to verify the characteristics of metropolitan surroundings. Therefore, experiments were conducted to measure location error and discover the causes for the occurrence of weak signal areas in metropolitan area, residential area, woods, ocean area, and open ground. In addition, this study suggests a point positioning algorithm with high precision suitable for local surroundings and an algorithm to remove weak signal areas.

  • In this paper, a real time diagnostic algorithm fur estimating the impact location by loose parts is proposed. It is composed of two modules such as the alarm discrimination module (ADM) and the impact-location estimation module(IEM). ADM decides whether the detected signal that triggers the alarm is the impact signal by loose parts or the noise signal. When the decision from ADM is concluded as the impact signal, the beginning time of burst-type signal, which the impact signal has usually such a form in time domain, provides the necessary data fur IEM. IEM by use of the arrival time method estimates the impact location of loose parts. The overall results of the estimated impact location are displayed on a computer monitor by the graphical mode and numerical data composed of the impact point, and thereby a plant operator can recognize easily the status of the impact event. This algorithm can perform the diagnosis process automatically and hence the operator's burden and the possible operator's error due to lack of expert knowledge of impact signals can be reduced remarkably. In order to validate the application of this method, the test experiment with a mock-up (flat board and reactor) system is performed. The experimental results show the efficiency of this algorithm even under high level noise and potential application to Loose Part Monitoring System (LPMS) for improving diagnosis capability in nuclear power plants.

  • Many applications in the area of location-based services and personal navigation require nowadays the location determination of a user not only in outdoor environment but also indoor. To locate a person or object in a building, systems that use either infrared, ultrasonic or radio signals, and visible light for optical tracking have been developed. The use of WiFi for location determination has the advantage that no transmitters or receivers have to be installed in the building like in the case of infrared and ultrasonic based location systems. WiFi positioning technology adopts IEEE802.11x standard, by observing the radio signals from access points installed inside a building. These access points can be found nowadays in our daily environment, e.g. in many office buildings, public spaces and in urban areas. The principle of operation of location determination using WiFi signals is based on the measurement of the signal strengths to the surrounding available access points at a mobile terminal (e.g. PDA, notebook PC). An estimate of the location of the terminal is then obtained on the basis of these measurements and a signal propagation model inside the building. The signal propagation model can be obtained using simulations or with prior calibration measurements at known locations in an offline phase. The most common location determination approach is based on signal propagation patterns, namely WiFi fingerprinting. In this paper the underlying technology is briefly reviewed followed by an investigation of two WiFi positioning systems. Testing of the system is performed in two localization test beds, one at the Vienna University of Technology and the second at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. First test showed that the trajectory of a moving user could be obtained with a standard deviation of about ${\pm}$ 3 m.

  • In this paper, we propose indoor location tracking method using RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator) value received from BLE(Bluetooth Low Energy) beacon. Due to the influence of various external environmental factors, it is very difficult to improve the accuracy in indoor location tracking. In order to solve this problem, we propose a novel method of reducing the noise generated in the external environment by using a double Gaussian filter. In addition, the value of the RSSI signal generated in the BLE beacon is different for each device. In this study, we propose a method to allocate additional weights in order to compensate the intensity of signal generated in each device. This makes it possible to improve the accuracy of indoor location tracking using beacons. The experiment results show that the proposed method effectively decrease the RSSI deviation and increase location accuracy. In order to verify the usefulness of this study, we compared the Kalman filter algorithm which is widely used in signal processing. We further performed additional experiments for application area for indoor location service and find that the proposed scheme is useful for BLE-based indoor location service.

  • In this paper, we propose an indoor logistic tracking system that identifies the location and inventory of the logistics in the room based on fingerprints. Through this, we constructed the actual infrastructure of the logistics center and designed and implemented the logistics management system. The proposed system collects the signal strength through the location terminal and generates the signal map to locate the goods. The location terminal is composed of a UHF RFID reader and a wireless LAN card, reads the peripheral RFID signal and the signal of the wireless AP, and transmits it to the web server. This allows the user to communicate with the server through the smartphone app and get information and location of nearby items.

  • This paper presents a method of location sensing of mobile objects using RF devices. By analyzing signal strengths between a certain number of fixed RF devices and a moving RF device, we can recognize the location of a moving object in real time. Firstly, signal strength values between RF devices are gathered, and then the values are normalized and constructed as a model feature vector for specific location. A number of model patterns are acquired and registered for all of the location which we want to recognize. For location sensing, signal strength information for an arbitrary moving RF device is acquired and compared with model feature vectors registered previously. In this case, distance value is calculated and the moving RF device is classified as one of the known model patterns. Experimental results show that our methods have performed the location sensing successfully with 100% rate of recognition when the number of fixed RF devices is 10 or more than 12. In terms of cost and applicability, experimental results seem to be very encouraging.

  • This study deals with the location of partial discharges(PDs) for power cables and GIS using 2 PD sensors and long coaxial signal cables. Throughout the experiments by use of simulated PD pulses and corona discharges in the power cable system, it is found out that the impedance matching between the coaxial signal cable and the measuring equipment should be done for good S/N ratio and the on-site measurement using more than 100m-long coaxial signal cable is possible. In addition, new PD location algorithm with the polarities of PD pulses and the arrival time difference between two pulses was proposed and was proved through the partial discharge experiments for the cable joint defect and artificial void defect.

  • This paper proposes a portable cable fault detection system with automatic fault distinction and distance measurement using time-frequency correlation and reference signal elimination method and automatic fault classification algorithm in order to have more accurate fault determination and location detection than conventional time domain refelectometry (TDR) system despite increased signal attenuation due to the long distance to cable fault location. The performance of the developed system method was validated via an experiment in the test field constructed for the standardized performance test of power cable fault location equipments. The performance evaluation showed that accuracy of the developed system is less than 1.34%. Also, an error of automatic fault type and location by detection of phase and peak value through elimination of the reference signal and normalization of correlation coefficient and automatic fault classification algorithm not occurred.

  • With rapid growth of industry, underground power delivery systems are growing so rapidly and its capacity also growing. So if there are any accident in underground power cable, its inference is too great to count. So power system operators should find Its fault location as soon as possible and replace it But it is difficult to find its fault location for underground power cable. We are developing fault location system for underground power cable which can detect its fault location exactly. This system usually monitor underground power cable on-line But if there are an accident, it record Its transient signal and we can calculate fault location by analyzing it. To develop fault location system for power cable, we needed fault simulation system and we installed it physically and tested at various point. in this thesis, we describe on signal processing technology to detect fault location on power cable and on the result of tested fault location performance.
