A drilled shaft is a deep foundation that is constructed by placing fluid concrete in a drilled hole. Reinforcing steel can be installed in the excavation, if desired, prior to placing the concrete. Drilled shafts provide excellent foundation systems for civil structures. In order to utilize them effectively, it is essential that designers have a clear understanding for how drilled shafts are constructed and also understand the basis for design methods. This paper describes standard design methods for drilled shafts.

In this study, using constant normal stiffness(CNS) direct shear tests, side shear load distribution were analyzed by the influencing parameters of unconfined compressive strength, surface roughness, confining stress, and material properties. Based on the CNS tests, side shear load transfer function of drilled shafts in rock is proposed using geological strength index(GSI), which indicates discontinuity and surface condition of rock mass in Hoek-Brown criterion. Though comparisons with results of nine drilled shafts's load tests, it is found that the load-transfer curve by this study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurements, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of bearing capacity of drilled shaft.

Situations where support is provided solely in shaft resistance of drilled shafts are where the base of the drilled hole cannot be cleaned so that it is uncertain that any end bearing support will be developed. Alternatively, where sound bed rock underlies low strength overburden material, it may be possible to achieve the required support in end bearing on the rock only, and assume that no support is developed in the overburden. However, where the drilled shaft is drilled some depth into sound rock, a combination of side wall resistance and end bearing can be assumed. Both theoretical and field studies of the performance of rock socketed drilled shafts show that the major portion of applied load is usually carried in side wall resistance. Normal stress at the rock-concrete interface is induced by two mechanisms. First, application of a compressive load on the top of the pile results in elastic dilation of the concrete, and second, shear displacement at the rough surface of the drilled hole results in mechanical dilation of the interface. If the stiffness of the material surrounding the socket with respect to normal displacement is constant, then the normal stress will increase with increasing applied load, and there will be a corresponding increase in the shear strength. In this study, the numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the behavioral characteristics of side of rock socketed drilled shafts. The cause of non-linear head load-settlement relationship and failure mechanism at side are also investigated properly and the design charts are suggested and verified for the leading to greater efficiency and reliability in the pile design.

Two different methods were used for the scattering analysis of side-drilled holes(SDH). The scattering models include an explicit model based on the Kirchhoff approximation and the solution of the exact separation of variables. The far-field scattering amplitude was calculated and their time-domain results were compared for the case of shear vertical wave. The exact solution predicts the existence of the creeping wave. The Kirchhoff approximation agreed to the exact solution, except the case of the creeping wave. Two measurement models were introduced to predict the response from the SDHs for the case of immersion, pulse-echo testing. The received voltage was calculated for the case of the shear vertical waves with the incident angle of $45^{\circ}$ to the SDH with the diameter of 1mm, and compared with the experimental results.

A two-dimensional boundary element method was used for the scattering analysis of side-drilled hole(SDH). The far-field scattering amplitude was calculated for shear vertical(SV) wave, and their frequency and time-domain results were presented. The time-domain scattering amplitude showed the directly reflected wave from the SDH leading edge as well as the creeping wave. In an immersion, pulse-echo testing, two measurement models were introduced to predict the response from SDHs. The 2-D boundary element scattering amplitude was converted to the 3-D amplitude to be used in the measurement model. The receiver voltage was calculated fer SV wave incidence at 45$^{\circ}C$ on the 1 m diameter SDH, and the result was compared with experiment.

The electrical properties of a back drilled via-hole (BDH) without the open-stub and the plated through via-hole (PTH) with the open-stub, which is called the conventional structure, in a high-count multi~layered (HCML) printed circuit board (PCB) were investigated for a high-speed digital system, and a selected inner layer to transmit a high-speed signal was farthest away from the side to mount the component. Within 10 GHz of the broadband frequency, a design of experiment (DOE) methodology was carried out with three cause factors of each via-hole structure, which were the distance between the via-holes, the dimensions of drilling pad and the anti-pad in the ground plane, and then the relation between cause and result factors which were the maximum return loss, the half-power frequency, and the minimum insertion loss was analyzed. Subsequently, the empirical formulae resulting in a macro model were extracted and compared with the experiment results. Even, out of the cause range, the calculated results obtained from the macro model can be also matched with the measured results within 5 % of the error.
Lately public interest in tree saps of maple and birch trees stimulated to increase demands for sap drink as a natural medical beverage. In order to understand factors affecting tree sap flows, birch species, particularly Betula platyphylla in Mt.Sobaek area, were monitored for daily sap flows according to factors, such as DBH, tapping hole sizes and direction of hole drilling on the trunks. The chemical constituents of saps were also analyzed. The sap flow initiated from the end of March and finished at the end of April. The flow maxima appeared from April 14th to April 26th. Total amounts of the sap flow obtained from birch tree were over 1,800 ml per day per one tree. Sap flows were increased with increasing DBH and tree age. Six milimeter drilled hole resulted in the highest sap flows. Sap flows increased with increases of diameter and height of the trees. Hole drilling to downward side(south-facing) of tree produced almost doubled sap flows than that of upward one(north-facing), while rightside drilling produced same amounts of saps to that of leftside one. Six mm drilling gave the best results not only in maximum flows but also effective hole occluding rates. The saps have in the range of 4.5 to 5.6 pH and l.0 - 2.0% of saccharinity. Sucrose, glucose, fructose and high mineral contents were found in the saps of birch tree. The tree saps could be utilized not only medicinal drink, but also one of the healthy beverages.
Laser doppler flowmeter (LDF) has been applied to the measurement of pulpal blood flow (PBF) in human teeth. As far as we searched, the detection area of the pulp in the blood flow measurement has not been clarified, yet. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to obtain information of the detection area in PBF measurement using LDF. The experiments were performed on the artificial blood circulation in extracted human upper central incisors. The apical portions of examined teeth (n=6) were severed and root canals were enlarged from the apical end to the 2mm incisal to the level of enamel-cement junction. An individual resin cap of each tooth was prepared and a hole was drilled 2mm incisal to enamel-cement junction of the labial side of the cap. The measurement probe of LDF (MBF3D, Moor Instrument, UK) was plugged into the hole of the cap. Heparinized human peripheral blood, which was in advance collected and diluted 3 times with physiological saline, was pumped through the apical foramen of the teeth via a silicone tube and a disposable needle (o.d. 0.7mm) and blood flow signals were monitored. The flux signal significantly increased with the enlargement of the root canal to incisal direction (p<0.01, Friedman analysis). The result indicates that the performance of LDF in PBF with human teeth is limited.

The ability of time reversal techniques to focus ultrasonic beams on the source location is important in many aspects of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation. In this paper, we investigate the time reversal beam focusing of ultrasonic array sensors on a defect in layered media. Numerical modeling is performed using the commercially available software which employs a time domain finite difference method. Two different time reversal approaches are considered - the through transmission and the pulse-echo. Linear array sensors composed of N elements of line sources are used for signal reception/excitation, time reversal, and reemission in time reversal processes associated with the scattering source of a side-drilled hole located in the second layer of two layer structure. The simulation results demonstrate the time reversal focusing even with multiple reflections from the interface of layered structure. We examine the focusing resolution that is related to the propagation distance, the size of array sensor and the wavelength.

In ultrasonic testing of dissimilar metal welds, application of phased array technique in terms of incident beam focusing is not easy because of complicated material structures formed during the multi-pass welding process. Time reversal(TR) techniques can overcome some limitations of phased array since they are self-focusing that does not depend on the geometrical and physical properties of testing components. In this paper, we test the possibility of TR focusing on a defect within anisotropic, heterogeneous austenitic welds. A commercial simulation software is employed for TR focusing and imaging of a side-drilled hole. The performance of time reversed adaptive focal law is compared with those of calculated focal laws for both anisotropic and isotropic welds.
