  • In this paper, we present a study concerning the design of a 400 N class side thruster for small ships. The side thrusters used in Korea are imported from abroad. The performance and durability of the imported products employed in Korea are not adequate, therefore the side thrusters which will be suitable for Korean domestic needs to be re-designed. The strength calculation of the side thruster was performed by KS standard. Strength calculation and design were made to meet design requirements. Structural analysis and safety factor analysis were carried out to confirm the validity of strength calculations and design. After manufacturing the bevel gear, a back lash test was conducted. We also conducted a no-load test, a rated load, and an overload test for a performance test and a durability test of the design while satisfying the design conditions.

  • A continuous type side jet controller which has four nozzles with thrust control devices was considered. It is deployed to a missile for high maneuverability and fast controllability in the terminal guidance phase. However, it causes more complex aerodynamic jet interactions between the side jet and the supersonic free stream than does the conventional impulse type side jet with a small single thruster. In this paper, a numerical investigation of the jet interference effects for the missile equipped with a continuous type side jet thruster is presented. A three-dimensional flow field was simulated by using a commercial unstructured-based CFD solver. The numerical simulation method was validated through comparison with wind tunnel test results for the single jet. The method of defining jet direction for this type of side jet control to minimize simulation cases was also introduced. Flow fields investigation and jet interaction effects for various flow conditions, jet pressure ratios and defined jet direction conditions were performed. From the numerical simulation for the continuous type side jet, extensive aerodynamic interference data were obtained to construct an aerodynamic coefficients database for precise missile control.

  • In this study, 1-way fluid structure interaction analysis(FSI) for the shutter, component of side jet thruster was performed to evaluate the safety. Driving torque to open nozzle, thermal and high pressure load of hot gas was applied to shutter. Thus, the shutter must be designed to endure this load during combustion. We carried out computational fluid dynamics analysis to obtain the pressure, temperature, and heat transfer coefficient of hot gas of side jet thruster. We then used the data as the load condition for a thermal structural analysis using a mapping method. The locations with the maximum stress and temperature distributions were found. We compared the maximum stress with the tensile stress of shutter material according to temperature to evaluate the safety. We also analyzed the radial deformation of the shutter to set the proper interface gap with the side jet thruster parts.

  • Side jet thruster using nozzle closure separation device provides a solid rocket with a trajectory shift function. Side jet thruster consists of low combustion temperature propellant, neutral type propellant grain and nozzle closure separation device. If a trajectory shift is required, side jet thrust is generated on the rocket by separating some nozzle closures located in the opposite direction to thrust. After completing trajectory shift, the other nozzle closures located in the thrust direction are separated to cease side jet thrust. The operation process is verified through ground static test. The result in this study can be applied to changing rocket trajectory by controlling side jet thrust through nozzle closure separation.

  • The MEMS solid propellant thrusters have very low thrust level for applying to the propulsion system of micro/nano satellites or the side jet thruster of smart bombs. In this research, the fabrication possibility of planar type MEMS solid propellant thrusters that have enlarged burning surface area was examined and the safety of the structure of thruster during the firing test was confirmed. The performance of a micro igniter which is the key component of the MEMS solid propellant thruster was estimated by the ANSYS Icepak and evaluated by the experiment. Finally, the thrust was measured by the micro force sensor. The levels of thrust were 300, 600 mN in the case of K=15, 20.

  • This paper shows an autopilot design example with simulation results for a medium range surface-to-air missile used to intercept fast maneuver targets. The missile is assumed to use both aerodynamic fins and side thrusters to achieve fast time response. The steady-state maneuver capability of the missile is assumed to be enough at high altitude to engage usual maneuvering targets. Side thruster is used to get an extremely rapid acceleration response at high altitude where the missile´s aerodynamic control effectiveness is weak. The strategy of control design is firstly to employ side thrusters to achieve a rapid response and then to hand-over the control to the aerodynamic fins to maintain the desired acceleration command in the steady state ...

  • To analyze flow characteristics and performance of the side jet thruster with 4 shutters and rectangular nozzles, a 3-D simulation has been implemented. Numerical calculations for three rotation anlgles of the shutter, have been conducted. Internal recirculation in a chamber and asymmetric flow structure in a nozzle were observed. In addition, the more shutter rotated, the more asymmetries of flow increased, and this phenomena resulted in thrust bias. The degrees of thrust bias and thrust performance with the rotation angles of the shutter were predicted and comparisons with theoretical thrust were made.

  • For protection of the thruster against mechanical damage and reduction of tunnel resistance at ship forward speed, the tunnel grids are normally installed. Some of ship operators however, have a strong distrust of the protective function of the tunnel grids and so they do not want to install the protective grids for higher thruster efficiency. Since the grids should be installed at very close to the side shell as far as possible in due consideration of flow direction to minimize additional resistance induced by tunnel openings, it has been too hard and time consuming work to install the grids on the curved and chamfered tunnel entrances considering its relatively low resistance reduction effect. DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd) developed a substituting device named TG (Tunnel Guides) for bow thruster tunnel grids which is characterized by higher resistance reduction, higher thruster efficiency and easy to installation. This paper provides the principle idea of the TG with short history of the development using CFD calculations and model experiments in MOERI (former KRISO).
