The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of orthodontic force on periodontal cellular activity by immunoperoxidase stain of epidermal growth factor, one of the tissue hormone. And supplementarily, to investigate of the changes of periodontal structures, periodontium was stained by H-E, Masson's Trichrome, P. A. S. stain after orthodontic force application. The experimental animals were four young adult dogs of average 8 month old. The fixed orthodontic appliance was cemented on mandibular right 4th premolar and 1st molar of each animal as experimental site. Mandibular left 4th premolar area of the same animal was used as control. The appliance consist of two silver crown soldered with 0.030' tube, $0.018\times0.022'$ S.S. sectional arch wire, and 0.009' open coil spring for manifestating of orthodontic force for bodily tooth movement of mandibular 4th premolar toward mesial direction. Experimental group was sacrificed at 1, 2, 3, 5 weeks from beginning of the experiment, and was investigated immunohistochemically and bistochemically by several staining methods. Findings were as follows: 1. The degree of EGF staining in control group was highest in epithelium of periodontium, and osteoclasts, osteoblasts and fibroblasts around the capillary were stained at higher level in periodontium. Generally, control group shows positive distribution of EGF all around the periodontal area. 2. The degree of EGF staining in control and 5 week group were similar, and did not show the significant different level between tension and pressure side. 3. All of 1, 2, 3 week group showed the same staining degree and distribution of EGF, and the tension side was more positive reaction of EGF stain than the pressure side. 4. The features of collagen fiber and periodontal fiber arrangement observed by H-E, Masson's Trichrome and P. A. S. stain revealed that oblique periodontal fibers were strectched in tension side, compressed in pressure side of all experimental group. Some fiber group in pressure side of 5 week group recovered the regular arrangement along the capillaries.
In this paper, commercial CFD program FLUENT v5.3 is used for simulation of MCFC stack. Besides using conservation equations included in FLUENT by default, mass change, mole fraction change and heat added or removed due to electrochemical reactions and water gas shift reaction are considered by adding several equations using user defined function. The stacks calculated are 6 and 25 kW class coflow stack which are composed of 20 and 40 unit cells respectively. Simulation results showed that pressure drop took place in the direction of gas flow, and the pressure drop of cathode side is more larger than that of anode side. And the velocity of cathode gas decreased along with the gas flow direction, but the velocity of anode gas increased because of the mass and volume changes by the chemical reactions in each electrodes. Simulated temperature profile of the stack tended to increase along with the gas flow direction and it showed similar results with the experimental data. Water gas shift reaction was endothermic at the gas inlet side but it was exothermic at the outlet side of electrode respectively. Therefore water gas shift reaction played a role in increasing temperature difference between inlet and outlet side of stack. This results suggests that the simulation of large scale commercial stacks need to consider water gas shift reaction.
The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex and flame-vortex interaction in a $CH_4/Air$ diffusion flame with addition of $CO_2$ were investigated numerically. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector for low Mach number flow. A two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as a combustion model. Through comparison of results by effect of $CO_2$ added either on the fuel or oxidizer side, it was found that the growth of single vortex and entrainment of surrounding fluid by $CO_2$addition on the fuel side are larger than those by $CO_2$ addition on oxidizer side. Also, when $CO_2$ is added on fuel side, flame-vortex interaction becomes more significant than on air side.

Objective : This study was conducted with an aim to use it as basic data for developing assistive devices, such as insoles that can suppress the progress of degenerative diseases and strategies, to improve early degenerative diseases by assessing walking characteristics of farm workers who were classified as KL-grade in the perspective of motor mechanics. Method : 38 male and female adults who complained of knee joint pain for more than six months were selected, and they were classified according to KL-grade. KL-grade was assessed by an orthopaedic specialist and an occupational environment health specialist. Filming equipment (FX-1, CASIO, Japan) and a ground reaction force system (AMTI OR6, AMTI, USA) were used to identify ground reaction force characteristics, and WOMAC was used for a pain rating scale. Results : There was a difference between the right and left side (axis-X) according to KL-grade, and when the grade was higher, the internal ground reaction force was also higher. Changes in COP were not affected by KL-grade of the knee joint, but it tended to increase as the grade increased. There were differences in the time required for limb support while walking according to the grades, and when the grade was higher, walking was more inefficient with long braking force and short propulsion forces. Also, pain rating scale, the right and left side, and COP changes while in support phase were related. Conclusion : There was a partial, statically significant difference in KL-grade and ground reaction force occurring during the support phase, and there were differences in ground reaction forces according to the grades of degenerative arthritis in the knee joint, indicating that this study is worthy as basic data for future studies.

Cable stayed bridge is supported by cables and the negative reaction occurs by cables at anchor pier. To solve this problem, the proper side span ratio and the negative reaction measure of anchor pier are needed. And structural system of cable stayed bridge is determined by solution of the negative reaction as installation of the intermediate pier, counterweight and so on. In feasibility study, Vam Cong bridge was planned as 5 span cable stayed bridge. However, it was changed to 3 span cable stayed bridge in detailed design because of constructability and economy. The intermediate pier was excluded in order to improve the constructability, and side span ratio increased to control the negative reaction. As a result, Vam Cong bridge secure constructability, structural safety, and efficiency.
A membrane reactor concept, which combines the typical characteristics of chemical reaction with separation process, has been analyzed and simulated in this study. The advantages of the use of a membrane reactor include chemical equilibrium shift towards higher reactant conversion and purer product than the traditional reactors. A membrane reactor model which incorporates a catalytic reaction zone and a separation membrane is proposed. The water-gas shift reaction to produce hydrogen was chosen as a model reaction to be investigated. The membrane reactor is divided into smaller parts by number of n and each part (named cell), which contains both reaction and product separation function is modeled. One of the membrane outlet streams is connected to the next cell, which is repeated up to the last cell. The simulation results can be used for various purposes including decision of optimum operating condition and membrane reactor design.
A gas chromatography/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) method has been developed for the determination of trace mono-n-butyltin (MBT), di-n-butyltin (DBT), and tri-n-butyltin (TBT) compounds in sediments. Samples were extracted by 10% acetic acid in methanol containing 0.03% tropolone and were then derivatized for GC/MS analysis. Ethylation by sodium tetraethylborate and phenylation by sodium tetraphenylborate were evaluated as a derivatization reaction of the organotins in sample extract. n-Hexane was added into reaction media in the beginning of the reaction for the continuous extraction of derivatized organotins. Ethylation requires less than 2 hours to get proper derivatization yields for MBT, DBT, and TBT altogether and produces relatively low amounts of side reaction products. Compared to ethylation, phenylation requires much longer time but provides relatively lower yield and produces considerable amounts of side reaction products. Therefore, the ethylation reaction was applied for the analysis of organotin compounds in sediment. An isotope dilution mass spectrometric (IDMS) method based on GC/MS has been applied to the accurate determination of DBT compounds in the sediments. The IDMS results from the analyses of sediment samples showed a reasonable repeatability and a good agreement with the values obtained by IDMS based on liquid chromatography/induced coupled plasma/mass spectrometry.
Muscle weakness in the hemiplegia following stroke is an important factor which determines the quality of life in the future. Therefore, muscle strengthening exercise is essential for functional recovery in hemiplegic patients. Even though the popular conception is that muscle strengthening exercise causes spasticity and associated reaction that hemiplegia patients don't want, and that it disturbs functional recovery, recently there have been many new reports against that opinion. Therefore, the effects of strengthening exercise programs on functional recovery in hemiplegic patients are still controversial. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of strengthening exercise programs for the knee joint using isokinetic exercise on the associated reaction of the upper extremities. Comparing the muscle activities of biceps brachii and triceps brachii during, before, and immediately after 2 and 5 minute intervals of isokinetic exercise, we examined the increase and decrease of associated reaction. Twenty stroke inpatients participated in this study. Surface electromyography was used to get muscle activity data from biceps brachii and triceps brachii. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1. The flexor and extensor peak torque were significantly higher on the sound side than the affected side (p<.05). 2. Before and after strengthening exercise, there was no significant difference in muscle activities (surface electromyographic root mean square values) between the sound and affected side. 3. Muscle activities were examined during, before, and immediately after 2 and 5 minute intervals of isokinetic exercise. There were significant differences in muscle activities between, before and during the exercises, during exercise and 5 minutes after exercise in the biceps brachii (p<.05), and during exercise and 5 minutes after exercise in the triceps brachii (p<.05). In conclusion, there was no relation between strengthening exercise and associated reaction in the upper extremities. Rather, muscle activities after exercise had a tendency to decrease relative to before the exercise. Thus, it is considered that intensive strengthening exercise contributes to improvement of functional recovery without increase in associated reaction in hemiparetic patients.
Side-chain liquid crystalline polymers having polysiloxane skeletons were synthesized by a thiol-ene reaction, using two kinds of mesogenic groups: a cholesteryl group for induction into a cholesteric liquid crystal phase and a triazomesogenic group for imparting light-sensitivity. All the synthesized polymers were crystalline, except the one with a single cholesteryl group. Crystallinity, glass transition temperature, and melt transition temperature increased with increasing content of the azomesogenic group. The polymer (P-C10A0) with a single cholesteryl group has a cholesteric phase, the one (P-C0A10) with a single azomesogenic group has a smectic phase, and those with both types of mesogenic groups showed both smectic and cholesteric phases. The temperature ranges of the two liquid crystalline phases in the co-polymers were independent of the contents of the two types of mesogenic groups. The rate of photoisomerization of the light-sensitive azobenzene group in the polymer decreased with increasing azobenzene content due to steric hindrance between the azomesogenic groups.
