  • This study investigates thermal and mechanical characterization of Hafnium carbide coating on the $C_f-C$ composites. The hafnium carbide coatings by vacuum plasma spray on the C/C-SiC composites are prepared to evaluate oxidation and wear resistance. We perform the thermal durability tests by thermal cycling at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 10cycles in air and investigates the weight change of each cycle. We also evaluate the wear and indentation behavior using tungsten carbide ball indenter as a mechanical evaluation. As a result, the HfC coating is beneficial to reduce of weight loss during thermal cycling test and improve the elastic property of C/C-SiC composite. Especially, the HfC coating improves the wear resistance of C/C-SiC composite.

  • Al powder, AlN powder, SiC whisker and sintering aids were wet-mixed, and then the specimens prepared with mixed powder were reacted by nitridation at 600∼1400$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs. It was cleat that the higher nitridation and the more SiC whisker content were, the better bending strength was. The specimen of Al50/AlN50 reacted at 1400$^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs had the nitridation percent of 97%, the shrinkage under 2%, and the relative density of 78%. And the maximum bending strength of reaction-bonded specimen was 250 MPa. The specimens completely nitrided were post-sintered at 1700, 1800 and 1900$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. The post-sintered body had the shrinkage under 6% and the relative density of 86%. Because of the formation of solid solution between AlN and SiC whisker over 1800$^{\circ}C$, the promotion of mechanical properties according to SiC whisker addition was not observed. The post-sintered body had the maximum bending strength of 195 MPa.

  • This work presents the effects of binders on the electrochemical performance of Si-C composites as the anode of lithium ion batteries. PAI (polyamide-imide) was used as an organic binder, and PAN (polyacrylonitrile), PAA (polyacrylic acid) and CMC + SBR (carboxymethyl cellulose + styrene-butadiene rubber) were used as aqueous binders. As a result, stabilization time for the cell with a Si-C composite anode synthesized using aqueous binders became shorter than an organic binder. Particularly in the case of the cell using PAA binder, better performance was observed in terms of adhesion strength, initial efficiency, the volume expansion ratio, Coulombic efficiency, and capacity retention.

  • Using the high-frequency induction heated combustion method, the simultaneous synthesis and densification of $WSi_2-xvol.%SiC$ (x=0, 10, 20, 30) composites was accomplished using elemental powders of W, Si and C. A complete synthesis and densification of the materials was achieved in one step within a duration of 2 min. The relative density of the composite was up to 97% for the applied pressure of 60MPa and the induced current. The average grain size of $WSi_2$ are 6.9, 6.1, and $5.0{\mu}m$, respectively. The hardness and the fracture toughness increases with increasing SiC content. The maximum values for the hardness and fracture toughness are $1840kg/mm^2\;and\;5.1MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}\;at\;WSi_2-30vol.%SiC$.

  • The effective elasticity and conduction of composite materials containing arbitrarily oriented multiple phases has been analyzed using the concept of orientation-dependent average fields and concentration factors. The analysis provided closed form expressions for the effective stiffnesses and conductivities. Under the prescribed boundary conditions, the concentration factors were evaluated by the equivalent inclusion principle, through which the interaction between various phases is approximated by the Mori-Tanaka mean-field approximation. SiC particulate(SiC$_{p}$) reinforce aluminum(Al) matrix composites were fabricated and their elastic constants and electrical conductivities were measured together with a careful study of their microstructure. The measured properties showed a systematic anisotropy and this behavior could be attributed to the preferred orientation of SiC$_{p}$. The theoretical model developed was applied to the computation of the anisotropic properties of these composites. Both two-phase and three-phase composites were considered based on the microstructural information. The SiC$_{p}$ was modeled as an ellipsoid with planar random orientation distribution in the extruded Al/SiC$_{p}$ composites. The effect of extraneous phase such as intermetallic compounds was also investigated.tigated.

  • A nondestructive evaluation technique was developed for the quantitative determination of the reinforcement volume fractions in particulate reinforced metal matrix composites. The proposed technique employed a composite micromechanics which accounts for the microstructure of the composite medium together with the measurement of anisotropic electrical conductivity. When the measured conductivity was coupled with the theoretically predicted conductivity, the unknown reinforcement volume fraction was calculated. An analytical model based on the Mori-Tanaka method was described which relates the NDE signatures to the composite microstructure. The volume fractions were calculated using eddy current measurements made on a wide range of silicon carbide particulate ($SiC_p$) reinforced aluminum (Al) matrix composites. The calculated $SiC_p$ volume fractions were in good agreement with the measured volume fractions in the range of 0-30%. The technique was also found to be effective in estimating the total volume percentage of reinforcement and intermetallic compound formed during the processing stage.

  • We prepared $0.25\~l.5um$ poly silicon gate array test group with $SiO_2$ spacers in order to employ NiCo composite salicide process from 15nm Ni/15nm Co/poly structure. We investigate the residual metal shape evolution by varying the rapid thermal silicide anneal temperature from $700^{\circ}C\;to\;1100^{\circ}C$. We observed the residual metals agglomerated into maze type and line type on $SiO_2$ field and silicide gate, respectively as temperature increased. We propose that lower silicide temperature would be favorable in newly proposed NiCo salicide in order to lessen the agglomeration causing the leakage and scum formation.

  • Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) represent a class of non-brittle refractory materials for harsh and extreme environments in aerospace and other applications. The quasi-ductility of these structural materials depends on the quality of the interface between the matrix and the fiber surface. In this study, a manufacture route is described where in contrast to most other processes no additional fiber coating is used to adjust the fiber/matrix interfaces in order to obtain damage tolerance and fracture toughness. Adapted microstructures of uncoated carbon fiber preforms were developed to permit the rapid infiltration of molten alloys and the subsequent reaction with the carbon matrix. Furthermore, any direct reaction between the melt and fibers was minimized. Using pure silicon as the reactive melt, C/SiC composites were manufactured with an aim of employing the resulting composite for friction applications. This paper describes the formation of the microstructure inside the C/C preform and resulting C/C-SiC composite, in addition to the MAX phases.

  • Uniform, hollow nanosilica spheres were prepared by the chemical coating of cationic polystyrene (cPS) with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), followed by calcination at 600 $^{\circ}C$ under air. cPS was synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization using 2,2'-azobis (2-methyl propionamidine) dihydrochloride as the cationic initiator, and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) as a stabilizer. The resulting cPS spheres were 280 nm in diameter, and showed monodispersion. After coating, the hollow silica product was spherically shaped, and 330 nm in diameter, with a narrow distribution of sizes. Dispersion was uniform. Wall thickness was 25 nm, and surface area was 96.4 $m^2/g$, as determined by BET. The uniformity of the wall thickness was strongly dependent upon the cPS surface charge. The effects of TEOS and ammonia concentrations on shape, size, wall thickness, and surface roughness of hollow $SiO_2$ spheres were investigated. We observed that the wall thicknesses of hollow $SiO_2$ spheres increased and that silica size was simultaneously enhanced with increases in TEOS concentrations. When ammonia concentrations were increased, the irregularity of rough surfaces and aggregation of spherical particles were more severe because higher concentrations of ammonia result in faster hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS. These changes caused the silica to grow faster, resulting in hollow $SiO_2$ spheres with irregular, rough surfaces.
