  • Wear behavior or SiC-particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (MMC) were investigated by pin-on-disk tests in vacuum with various pressures, argon, and air with various levels of humidity. The wear rate of 2024Al and MMC increased in the following order: in a vacuum at $5.0{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa, at 1.0Pa, in argon at 0% RH, in argon at 60% RH, in argon at 90% RH, in air at 0% RH, in air at 60% RH and in air at 90% RH. In other words, the influence or environment on wear becomes stronger in the following order: moisture, oxygen, and a combination of moisture and oxygen. In various environments, the difference of the wear rate of 2024Al and MMC was compared. In argon and air at 0% RH, the wear rates of MMC were higher than that of 2024Al. In contrast, in argon and air at 60, 90% RH, the wear rates of MMC were lower than that of 2024Al.

  • Hot workability of SiCp/AA2024 composites reinforced with different vol. % of SiCp reinforcements (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 vol. %) was investigated by hot torsion tests. Hot restoration of the composites was studied from the flow curves and deformed microstructures. Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was occurred in all the composites during the hot deformation at 370-43$0^{\circ}C$ under a strain rate of 1.0/sec. Also, the flow stress of the composites increased with increasing the SiCp reinforcement vol. % and the difference of flow stress between the composites decreased with increasing the deformation temperature.

  • Ultrafine ${\beta}$-SiC powders were synthesized by the vapor phase reaction of TMS[Si(CH3)4] in hydrogen The reaction temperature and TMS concentration were varied from 1000 to 1400$^{\circ}C$ and from 1 to 10% respectively. The average particle size and phase of the powders were analyzed by TEM and XRD. Ultrafine ${\beta}$-SiC powders were synthesized above 1000$^{\circ}C$ and the crystallinity of the powders increased with increasing reaction temperature. Shape of the particles were spherical and had average size of about 20 nm which showed no difference as the reaction temperature and TMS concentration increased. From the FT-IR analysis the absorption bands of Si-C of the powders shifted to higher wavenumber as the reaction temperature increased,. Under the condition of total gas flow above 1500cc/min ${\beta}$-SiC and poly-Si powders were obtained simultaneously. The Si-O bond intensity was increased under the condition of total gas flow rate above 1000cc/min which might be due to oxidation formed on poly-Si.

  • A centrifugally atomized 2024A1/SiC/sub p/ composites were extruded to study effect of clusters on mechanical properties, and a model was proposed that the strength of MMCs would be estimated from the load transfer model approach that taken into consideration of the clusters. This model has been successfully utilized to predict the strength and fracture toughness of MMCs. The experimental and calculated results show coincidence and that the fracture toughness decreases with increasing the volume fraction of particles. On the basis of experimental observations, we suggest that the strength and fracture toughness of particle reinforced MMCs may be calculated from; σ/sub y/=σ/sub m/V/sub m/+σ/sub r/(V/sub r/-V/sub c)-σ/sub r/V/sub c/, K/sub IQ/=σ/sub Y/((3πt)((r/sub r//V/sub r/)(r/sub c//V/sub c/))/sup 1/2/)/sup 1/2/, respectively.

  • $Al-SiC_{p}$ composite layer was prepared by plasma thermal spray on aluminum substrate. The homogeneously dispersed composite powder for thermal spray was fabricated by mechanical alloying with ball mill. The friction tests of the composite layers and commercial aluminum alloys for comparison were performed in the temperature range of 20∼$260^{\circ}C$ with the interval of $40^{\circ}C$ with steel counter-face. Friction coefficient was recorded during test sequence, and the microstructure of surface and debris was investigated by optical and scanning electron microscope. Friction coefficients of composite and aluminum alloys at room temperature were similar except pure aluminum. As the temperature increase, friction coefficient was increased rapidly in AC4C, AC2A. But friction coefficient of $Al-SiC_{p}$ composite was not increased so much up to $220^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the reinforcement of $SiC_{p}$ into aluminum matrix increased the stability of friction coefficient as well as wear resistance.

  • A metal matrix composites(MMCs) for A16061 reinforced with silicon carbide particles is fabricated by melt-stirring method. The primary products of MMCs billets are prepared by volume fractions 5 vol% to 20 vol% and particle size $13\mu m$ to $22\mu m$.This paper will be made to examine the microstructure and mechanical properties of fabricated $SiC_p$/Al 6061 composite by melt-stirring and squeeze casting method. The MMC billets is extruded at $500^{\circ}C$ under the constant extrusion velocity $V_e$=2mm/min using curved shape die. Extrusion force, particle rearrangement, micro structure and mechanical properties of extruded composites will be investigated. The mechanical properties of primary billets manufactured by melt-stirring and squeeze casting method will be compared with extrusion specimen. The effect of volume fraction and size of the reinforcements will be studied. The increase in uniformity of particle dispersion is the major reason for an improvement in reliability due to hot extrusion with optimal shape die. Experimental Young's modulus and 0.2% offset yield strength for the extruded MMCs will be compared with theretical values calculated by the Eshelby method. A method will be proposed for the prediction of Young's modulus and yield strength in $SiC_p$ reinforced MMCs.

  • Al-SiC$_{p}$ composite layer was prepared by plasma thermal spray on aluminum substrate using composite powder prepared by mechanical alloying. Mechanically alloyed powder was achieved after 24 h milling, which was used for thermal spray coating. The correlations between process conditions and thickness/porosity were analyzed, and increase of hardness was confirmed. The presence of Al-Si-C-O compound was detected by TEM analysis.

  • The effect of spray deposition of oxide particles on oxidation behaviors of as-cast Mo-14.2Si-9.6B (at%) alloys at $1200^{\circ}C$ up to for 100 hrs has been investigated. Various oxide powders are utilized to make coatings by spray deposition, including $SiO_2,\;TiO_2,\;ZrO_2,\;HfO_2$ and $La_2O_3$. It is demonstrated that the oxidation resistance of the cast Mo-Si-B alloy can be significantly improved by coating with those oxide particles. The growth of the oxide layer is reduced for the oxide particle coated Mo-Si-B alloy. Especially, for the alloy with $ZrO_2$ coating, the thickness of oxide layer becomes only one fifth of that of uncoated alloys when exposed to in air for 100 hrs. The reduction of oxide scale growth of the cast Mo-Si-B alloy due to oxide particle coatings are discussed in terms of the change of viscosity of glassy oxide phases that form during oxidation at high temperature.
