Porous $TiO_2-SiO_2$ particles were synthesized by co-assembly of nanoparticles of $TiO_2$ and $SiO_2$ in evaporating aerosol droplets. Poly styrene latex (PSL) particles were employed as a template of porous particles. Flowrate of dispersion gas, weight ratio of $TiO_2/SiO_2$ and $SiO_2$ concentration in the precursor, and PSL size were chosen as process variables. The morphology, crystal structure, chemical bonding, and pore size distribution were analyzed by FE-SEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET. The morphology of porous $TiO_2-SiO_2$ particles was spherical and the average particle size range were from 1 to $10{\mu}m$. The particles were composed of meso and macro pores. The average particle diameter and pore volume of the as prepared particles were dependant on process variables. It was found that UV-Vis absorption of the porous particles was comparable with pure $TiO_2$ nanoparticles even though $TiO_2/SiO_2$ ratio is low in the porous particles.

AlSi-Al$_2$O$_3$ composite layer was prepared by plasma spray on steel substrate. The composite powder for plasma spray was prepared by simple mechanical blending. The wear resistance of the composite layers and matrix aluminum alloy were performed in terms of size distribution of ceramic particles. Friction coefficients of AlSi were decreased with incorporation of $Al_2$O$_3$. The tribological properties of coated layers were affected by the size of incorporated $Al_2$O$_3$ particle. The reinforcement of $Al_2$O$_3$ particle into aluminum alloy matrix decreased the friction coefficient as well as wear loss.
Purpose: Purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of particle size as well as number of pass on surface microstructure and hardness of SiC(p)/AZ31 surface composite fabricated by friction stir process (FSP). Method: SiC(p)/AZ31 surface composite containing different size of SiC particle (i. e., $2{\mu}m$ and $8{\mu}m$) was fabricated by multi-pass FSP. Microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope and surface hardness was determined by Vickers hardness tester. Results: For all the FSPed specimens with and without hardening particles, grain size was refined due to dynamic recrystallization behavior. Surface hardness was observed to increase with decreasing particle size in the composite layer. Increasing number of FSP pass was effective for homogeneous distribution of the hardening particles and for resulting increase in surface hardness. Conclusion: FSP was effective to modify surface microstructure for improving surface hardness of SiC/AZ31 composite.
In order to obtain the high purity $\beta$-SiC powder that possesses the excellent sinterability and is close to the spherical shape, the carbon black was mixed into the composition of Si(OC2H5)4-H2O-NH3-C2H5OH which the monodispersed spherical fine particles is formed the hydrolysis of Ethylsilicate and the mixture was carbonized under an argon atmosphere. Particle shpae, size and the yield of $\beta$-SiC powder were investigated according to the molar ratio of carbon/alkoxide and variations of reaction temperature and reaction time. The results of this study are as follow ; 1) The yield of $\beta$-SiC gained from the reaction for one hour at 150$0^{\circ}C$ almost got near 100% and the particle size of $\beta$-SiC from the reaction for 15 hrs at 150$0^{\circ}C$ was 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ on the average and close to the spherical shape agglomerate state. 2) When the molar ratio carbon/alkoxide is over 3.1 and the reaction occurs at 145$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs, the carbon content has not an effect on the kind of crystal of product.
After alumina sol was prepared by Yoldas process supported membranes were fabricated by adding ce and Re solution and SiO2 sol into alumina sol. The particle size of alumina sol was 11 nm and it was monodispersed transparent and stable for long time. The pore size of un-doped membrane started to increase to about 7,5nm at 1000$^{\circ}C$ and it was grown to twice (about 15nm) at 1100$^{\circ}C$ However the pore size of doped alumina was uniform to 1100$^{\circ}C$. The effect of retardation of grain growth was superior in SiO2 addition to that of Ce and Ru Because SiO2 doped samples transformed to needed-like phase and densified at 1200$^{\circ}C$ their application in membranes was limited. Ce and Ru doped sample showed vermicular structure identical to the un-doped ones at 1200$^{\circ}C$ But the particle size was smaller than that of un-doped ones.
Fine Si-Al-OH-C coprecipitate powders were prepared from Si(OC2H5)4, Al(i-OC3H7)3, and carbon black by a hydrolysis method before fabrication of Sialon-SiC composite powder by carbothermal reduction at 1350$^{\circ}C$ for 10h under N2/H2 mixed atmosphere. The characterization of the synthesized Sialon-SiC composite powders was performed using XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and particle size analysis methods. The average particle size and specific surface area of the synthesized Sialon-SiC composite powder were 0.13$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 20.1㎡/g, respectively when Z=1 and N2 : H2=50 : 50.
Si3N4/SiC nanocomposite ceramics containing 5 wt%dispersed SiC particles were prepared by gas-pressure-sintering at 200$0^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen atmosphere. SiC particles with average sizes of 0.2 and 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used, and the effect of the SiC particle size on the microstructure was investigated. The addition of SiC particles effectively suppressed the growth of the Si3N4 matrix grains. The effect of grain growth inhibition was higher in the nanocomposites dispersed with fine SiC. SiC particles were dispersed uniformly inside Si3N4 matrix grains and on grain boundaries. When the fine SiC particles were added, large fraction of the SiC particles was trapped inside the grains. On the other hand, when the large SiC particles were added, most of the SiC particles were located on grain boundaries. Typically, the fraction of SiC particles located at grain boundaries was higher in the specimen prepared from $\beta$-Si3N4 than in the specimen prepared from $\alpha$-Si3N4.

The spherical nonagglomerated and uniform nanometer-size SiO$_2$particles are synthesized by the injection of TEOS vapor, irons and reaction gas in a furnace. Ions are generated by corona discharge and these ions charge SiO$_2$particles. As a result, spherical, nonagglomerated and ultrafine particles are generated in various conditions. Their morphology, charging portion and size distribution are examined by using TEM, ESP and SMPS. As the applied voltage of electrode changes from 0 to 5.0 kV, it is observed that the melon diameter of SiO$_2$particle decreases from 94 nm to 42 nm.
Reaction bonded silicon carbide(RBSC) composite for heat-exchanger was fabricated by molten Si infiltration method. The raw materials with variable particle sizes were used in this experience. The finer the particle size in sintered silicon carbide was the more increasing 3-point bending strength and fracture toughness. As the adaptable particle sizes had been occupied interstice arising from packing sample, the mechanical properties were increased. In the PCS1-1 sample, the 3-point bending strength and fracture toughness were 323MPa and $4.9\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
Sintering behaviors of the glass-alumina composites for low firing temperature were investigated as a function of the particle size of glass frit. The system of glass frit was Pb-B-Si-Al-O. The median particle sizes of the glass frits were 2.72$\mu\textrm{m}$, 2.67$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.33$\mu\textrm{m}$, which were prepared with changing ball-milling times as 24 h, 48 h and 96 h. The glass-alumina composites showed maximum density at certain temperature, and further heating led to dedensification behaviors, so called over-firing. The sintering temperature, which showed maximum density, raised from 425$^{\circ}C$ to 475$^{\circ}C$ with increase of particle size of glass frit from 1.33$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 2.72$\mu\textrm{m}$. Especially, the over firing behaviors, which were occurred at high sintering temperatures, were greatly increased with decrease of particle size of glass frit.
