Tetragonal zirconia powder with 3 mol% Y2O3 mas mixed with up to 30 vol% of ${\beta}$-SiC powders, and the mixtures were hot-pressed at 1500$^{\circ}C$ for 60 min under a pressure of 30 MPa in Ar atmosphere. Flexural strength and fracture toughness were measured at room-and high-temperature (1000$^{\circ}C$). Evolution of microstructure was also conducted to investigate the effects of SiC addition on the properties of 3Y-TZP ceramics. Average grain size of the composites was about 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$, and decreased with SiC addition. Both room- and high-temperature mechanical properties of the composites were improved with SiC content. Particularly, high-temperature strength and fracture toughness of 3Y-TZP/30v/o SiC composite were twice as high as those of 3Y-TZP. The hardness of the composites also increased with SiC content and reached maximum value at 3Y-TZP/30v/o SiC composite.
SiC particles reinforced Mg-Zr, Mg-Zn and Mg-Zn-Zr composites were manufactured by Rheocompocasting method. Effects of Zn, Zr addition on microstructures and hardness were investigated by using the micro Vickers hardness tester, the optical and scanning electron microscopy. By the Zr addition to the pureMg/SiCp composites, SiC particles become more homogeneously dispersed and grain refined so that the micro hardness of the composite increased. In case of Zn addition, although grain refinement and homogeneous dispersion effects of SiC particles were not obtained, hardness was more increased than the only Zr added composite by the formation of many Mg-Zn intermetallic compounds at grain boundary. In the Mg-Zn-Zr/SiCp composite, the highest value of hardness was obtained by triple effects such as grain refining, dispersion hardening of SiC particles and Mg-Zn compounds.
Aluminum base composites reinforced with various amount of SiC particles and Mg contents have been investigated by different fabrication method for twenty-years. In this paper, how the decomposition and dissolution behaviors of $SiCp(20{\mu}m)$ in the melt of Al composites arised was studied. As the results, the decomposition and dissolution of SiCp into the melt of Al composites increased with increase of the temperature above $720^{\circ}C$, and holding time at a given melting temperature. Because SiC is thermodynamically unstable in this Al-SiCp composite at temperature above the liquidus, SiCp dissolves and reacts with Al in matrix to form $Al_4C_3$ according to following chemical equation $4Al+3SiC{\rightarrow}Al_4C_3+3Si$, Si decomposed and dissolved from SiCp increases Si content of matrix, while liquidus temperature of matrix decrease with increase of SiC content in matrix. The hardness of SiCp decreased with increase of the melting temperature, the hardness of the matrix /particle interface increased with increase of the melting temperature due to increase of the $Mg_2Si$ and $Al_4C_3$ intermetallic compounds, etc.

Carbon nano fibers (CNFs) reinforced magnesium alloy (AZ91) matrix composites have been fabricated by liquid pressing process. In order to improve the dispersibility of CNFs and the wettability with magnesium alloy melt, CNFs were mixed with submicron sized SiC particles ($SiC_p$). Also, the mixture of CNFs and $SiC_p$ were coated with Ni by electroless plating. In liquid pressing process, AZ91 melts have been pressed hydrostatically and infiltrated into three reinforcement preforms of only CNFs, the mixture of CNFs and $SiC_p$ (CNF+$SiC_p$), and Ni coated CNFs and $SiC_p$ ((CNF+$SiC_p$)/Ni). Some CNFs agglomerates were observed in only CNFs reinforced composite. In cases of the composites reinforce with CNF+$SiC_p$ and (CNF+$SiC_p$)/Ni, CNFs were dispersed homogeneously in the matrix, which resulted in the improvement of mechanical properties. The compressive strengths of CNF+$SiC_p$ and (CNF+$SiC_p$)/Ni reinforced composites were 38% and 28% higher than that of only CNFs composite.
The bi-materials with Al-Mg alloy and its composites reinforced with SiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles were prepared by conventional powder metallurgy method. The A1-5 wt%Mg and composite mixtures were compacted under $150{\sim}450\;MPa$, and then the mixtures compacted under 400 MPa were sintered at $773{\sim}1173K$ for 5h. The obtained bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiCp composite showed the higher relative density than those with $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite after compaction and sintering. Based on the results, the bi-materials compacted under 400 MPa and sintered at 873K for 5h were used for mechanical tests. In the composite side of bi-materials, the SiC particles were densely distributed compared to the $Al_2O_3$ particles. The bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiC composite showed the higher micro-hardness than those with $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite. The mechanical properties were evaluated by the compressive test. The bi-materials revealed almost the same value of 0.2% proof stress with Al-Mg alloy. Their compressive strength was lower than that of Al-Mg alloy. Moreover, impact absorbed energy of bi-materials was smaller than that of composite. However, the bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiCp composite particularly showed almost similar impact absorbed energy to $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite. From the observation of microstructure, it was deduced that the bi-materials was preferentially fractured through micro-interface between matrix and composite in the vicinity of macro-interface.

Cr-Mo-Si-C-N coatings were deposited on steel and Si wafer by a hybrid system of AIP and sputtering techniques using Cr, Mo and Si target in $Ar/N_2/CH_4$ gaseous mixture. Instrumental analyses of XRD and XPS revealed that the Cr-Mo-Si-C-N coatings must be a composite consisting of fine(Cr, Mo and Si)(C and N) crystallites and amorphous $Si_3N_4$ and SiC. The hardness value of Cr-Mo-Si-C-N coatings significantly increased from 41 GPa of Cr-Mo-C-N coatings to about 53 GPa with Si content of 9.3 at.% due to the refinement of (Cr, Mo and Si)(C and N) crystallites and the composite microstructure characteristics. A systematic investigation of the microstructures and mechanical properties of Cr-Mo-Si-C-N coatings prepared with various Si contents is reported in this paper.

Fully ceramic micro encapsulated (FCM) nuclear fuel is a concept recently proposed for enhancing the stability of nuclear fuel. FCM nuclear fuel consists of tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) fuel particles within a SiC matrix. Each TRISO fuel particle is composed of a $UO_2$ kernel and a PyC/SiC/PyC tri-layer which protects the kernel. The SiC ceramic matrix is created by sintering. In this FCM fuel concept, fission products are protected twice, by the TRISO coating layer and by the SiC ceramic. The SiC ceramic has proven attractive for fuel applications owing to its low neutron-absorption cross-section, excellent irradiation resistivity, and high thermal conductivity. In this study, a SiC-matrix composite containing TRISO particles was sintered by hot pressing with $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ additive system. Various sintering conditions were investigated to obtain a relative density greater than 95%. The internal distribution of TRISO particles within the SiC-matrix composite was observed using an x-ray radiograph. The fracture of the TRISO particles was investigated by means of analysis of the cross-section of the SiC-matrix composite.

$Si_3N_4/SiC$ composite ceramics was sintered in order to investigate their bending strength behavior after crack healing. $Y_2O_$ and $TiO_2$ power was added as sintering additives to enhance it's sintering property. A three-point bending specimen was cut out from sintered plates. About $100\;{\mu}m$ semi-circular surface cracks were made on the center of the tension surface of the three-point bending specimen using Vickers indenter. After the crack-healing processing from $500^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$, for 1 h, in air, the bending strength behavior of these crack-healed specimen coated with $SiO_2$ colloidal were determined systematically at room temperature. $Si_3N_4/SiC$ ceramics using additive powder ($Y_2O_3+TiO_2$) was superior to that of additive powder $Y_2O_3$. The additive powder $TiO_2$ exerted influence at growth of $Si_3N_4$. The optimum crack healing conditions coated $SiO_2$ colloidal were $1000^{\circ}C$ at $Si_3N_4/SiC$ using additive powder ($Y_2O_3+TiO_2$), and $1300^{\circ}C$ at $Si_3N_4/SiC$ using additive powder $Y_2O_3$.

The purpose of this study is to obtain basic information on the particle dispersion, the coefficient of thermal expansion and the thermal conductivity of compocasted Al-xSi-2Cu-1Mg/ySiC(x:6, 12, 18. $y:0{\sim}10wt.%$) composite. With increasing the content of SiC particles, the thermal expension coefficient and the thermal conductivity decrease. The coefficient of thermal expension between 20 and $300^{\circ}C$ is $21.3{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C{\sim}18.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ for the Al-Si alloys and $18.4{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C{\sim}16.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ for the composite with 10wt.% SiC. The thermal conductivity at $300^{\circ}C$ is $121{\sim}169W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}k^{-1}$ for the Al-Si alloys and $114{\sim}159W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}k^{-1}$ for the composite with 10wt.% SiC.
Manufactured $SiC_f/SiC$ composites by NITE method was investigated fracture characteristics according to the size of the surface crack. Coated surface crack with a $SiO_2$ colloid in several ways was evaluating the possibility of healing. The strength of CCS and UCS is 313 and 230MPa, respectively and it is about 1/3 of the SPS. Bending strength of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites has no effect with the pre-crack size to the critical crack size. $SiC_f/SiC$ composites can not generate large amount of $SiO_2$ oxides to the bottom of crack, and is only generated randomly on surfaces, and can not contribute to the recovery of bending strength.
