LCL filters installed at converter outputs offer a higher harmonic attenuation than L filters. However, as a three order resonant circuit, it is difficult to stabilize and has a risk of oscillating with the power grid. Therefore, careful design is required to damp LCL resonance. Compared to a passive damping method, an active damping method is a more attractive solution for this problem, since it avoids extra power losses. In this paper, the damping capabilities of capacitor current, capacitor voltage, and grid-side current feedback methods, are analyzed under the discrete-time state-space model. Theoretical analysis shows that the grid-side current feedback method is more suitable for use in active power filters, because it can damp LCL resonance more effectively than the other two methods when the ratio of the resonance and the control frequency is between 0.225 and 0.325. Furthermore, since there is no need for extra sensors for additional states measurements, this method provides a cost-efficient solution. To support the theoretical analysis, the proposed method is tested on a 7-kVA single-phase shunt active power filter.

This paper proposes the planning method for placement of capacitors in a distribution system. The main objectives in the planning for capacitor allocation are the reduction of installation costs and electric power loss. In the proposed method, the life time of each device is considered in calculating installation costs, and the optimal operation status of devices is found by genetic algorithm. Then, the optimal numbers and locations are determined based on the optimal operation status. Simulation results in the 69-bus distribution system show that the proposed method performs better than conventional methods.
The three-phase four-wire shunt active power filter (APF) is an effective method to solve the harmonic problem in three-phase four-wire power systems. In addition, it has two possible topologies, a four-leg inverter and a three-leg inverter with a split-capacitor. There are some studies investigating DC-link voltage control in three-phase four-wire APFs. However, when compared to the four-leg inverter topology, maintaining the balance between the DC-link upper and lower capacitor voltages becomes a unique problem in the three-leg inverter with a split-capacitor topology, and previous studies seldom pay attention to this fact. In this paper, the influence of the balance between the two DC-link voltages on the compensation performance, and the influence of the voltage balance controller on the compensation performance, are analyzed. To achieve the balance between the two DC-link capacitor voltages, and to avoid the adverse effect the voltage balance controller has on the APF compensation performance, a new DC-link voltage balance control strategy for the three-phase four-wire split-capacitor APF is proposed. Representative simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the analysis and the proposed DC-link voltage balance control strategy.

Interactions among multiple control functions of a UPFC installed in a power system have been observed in power system simulation and been reported in authors' previous publications [1,2]. This paper presents new analytical results about these observed interactions and concludes that they are due to the control conflict between the series and shunt part of the UPFC, which are connected through the internal common capacitor inside the UPFC. Investigation in the paper reveals, for the first time as far as the authors are aware of, that the linkage pattern of UPFC series and shunt part decides whether the control functions implemented by the UPFC series and shunt part conflict each other or not. This linkage pattern of UPFC series and shunt part can be described by the flow of active power through the UPFC at steady-state operation of the power system. Hence in order to predict the possible interactions among multiple control functions of the UPFC, an interaction indicator is proposed in the paper which is the direction and amount of active power flow through the internal link of the UPFC series and shunt part at steady-state operation of the power system. This proposed interaction indicator can be calculated from power system load flow solution without having to run simulation of the power system with UPFC controllers installed. By using the indicator, the interactions among multiple control functions of the UPFC caused by badly set controller's parameters are excluded. Therefore the indicator only identifies the possible existence of inherent control conflict of the UPFC.

A variable gain low noise amplifier (VG-LNA) implemented in TSMC 0.18 um process is presented. This VG-LNA is designed of two stage amplifier, and its gain is controlled by the shunt feedback loop composed of a gain control transistor (GCT) and a coupling capacitor in second stage. The channel resistance of GCT in the shunt feedback loop influences the input and output stages of a second stage by the Miller effect. Total gain of the proposed VG-LNA is changed by two factors, the load impedance reduction and the interstage mismatch by controlling the channel resistance of the GCT. Consequently, by adding a shunt feedback with a gain control transistor, this proposed VG-LNA achieves both wide gain tuning range of 37 dB and continuous gain control simultaneously.
This paper presents a new technique of reference current generator based on Kalman filter (KF) estimator for three-phase shunt active power filter (APF). The stationary reference frame (d-q algorithm) is used to transform the load currents into DC component. The harmonics of load currents are extracted and the three-phase reference currents are generated using KF estimator. The work is simulated using Matlab/Simulink platform. To validate the simulation results, an experimental test-rig have been perform using real-time control dSPACE DS1104. In addition, hysteresis current control was used to generate the switching signal for the correction of the harmonics in the system. The non-linear load were constructed with three-phase rectifier which connected in series with inductor and parallel with resistor and capacitor. The results shows that the new technique of shunt APF embedded with KF is proven to eliminate the harmonics created by the non-linear load with some improvement on the total harmonics distortion (THD).
FACTS technology is developed into the sophisticated system technology which combines conventional power system technology with power electronics, micro-process control, and information technology. Its objectives are achieving enhancement of the power system flexibility and maximum utilization of the power transfer capability through improvements of the system reliability, controllability, and efficiency [1]. As a series and shunt compensator, UPFC consists of two inverters with common dc link capacitor bank. It controls the magnitude of shunt bus voltage and real and reactive power flow of transmission line[2]. In this paper, we present the design, implementation and test results of developed 20kVA level prototype UPFC. It is applied to power system simulator and controls the real and reactive power flow and shunt bus voltage magnitude.
The objectives of power system operations are to preserve system stability and reliability as well as to supply proper electric power. For an activation of these objectives, voltage and reactive power should be considered. There are a number of types about reactive power sources, and an insertion of shunt capacitor banks are one of the method to support bus voltage adjacent. This paper includes the design procedure to determine the hybrid type capacitor bank configurations on power system to improve stability and reliability. This procedure includes the capacitor bank capacity calculation, reactor type selection, and reactor capacity calculation. The total capacity calculation of capacitor bank is based on the reactive power margin which is calculated through system studies such as, contingency analysis and Q-V analysis. In the second step, the reactor type and its capacity can be determined through the harmonic analysis. This paper shows that the harmonics are decreased by the proposed hybrid type capacitor bank, especially 5th and 7th harmonics.
This paper analyses the power flow of a three-feeder/multi-bus distribution system by a custom Generalized Power Quality Conditioner (GUPQC). The GUPQC has been realized by three voltage source converters (VSCs) coupled back-to-back through a common DC-link capacitor on the DC-side. One feeder was controlled by the shunt compensator, whereas each of the other two feeders was controlled by the proposed novel series compensator. The GUPQC has the capability to simultaneously compensate voltage and current quality problems of a multi-bus/three-feeder distribution system. Besides that, the power can be transferred from one feeder to other feeders to compensate for poor power quality problems. Extensive simulation studies were carried out by using MATLAB/SIMULINK software to establish the ability of the GUPQC to improve power quality of the distribution systems under distorted supply voltage conditions.

Installation of FACTS(Flexible AC Transmission System) device can maximize utilization of existing power facilities and reliability of power system. STATCOM has excellent characteristics in operating cost, maintaining facilities, loss and so on. However, STATCOM has a disadvantage of facility cost over capacity. So it is effective to coordinate STATCOM and existing external bank(capacitor and reactor) and OLTC(On Load Tap Changer). This paper mainly proposes coordinative control method between STATCOM installed within substation and other reactive power resources including Shunt Reactors and Shunt Capacitors and OLTC for voltage stability improvement. The proposed coordinative control method is developed for the STATCOM of Mi-gum substation and the simulation results of EMTP/RV model show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
