In this paper, broadband shunt technique for increasing transmission loss is experimentally investigated. Piezoelectric shunt damping is studied using resonant shunt circuit and negative capacitor shunt circuit. A resonant shunt circuit is implemented by using a resistor and inductor. Negative Capacitor shunt damping is similar in nature to resonant shunt damping techniques, as a single piezoelectric material is used to dampen multi-mode. Performance of both methods is experimentally studied for noise reduction. This is based upon SAE J1400 test method and a transmission loss measurement system is provided for it. This paper will present the test setup fer transmission loss measurement and the tuning procedure of shunt circuits. Finally the results of sound transmission tests will be shown.
We fabricated a resistive SFCL having a shunt resistor parallel to it in order to bifurcate the transient current at faults. The SFCL consists of a YBCO film coated with an Au layer (10 ${\omega}$ at room temperature), which is to disperse the heat generated at hot spots in the YBCO film, and the 5 ${\omega}$ shunt resistor. The minimum quench current of the SFCL was found to be 12.2 A$_{peak}$. This SFCL successfully controlled the fault current below 23 A$_{peak}$ which is otherwise to increase up to 113 A$_{peak}$. Bifurcation of the current resulted in the temperature rise of the YBCO/Au film 3 times slower than without the shunt, protecting the SFCL at high currents.

This paper presents the multi-mode noise reduction of smart panels of which passive piezoelectric shunt damping is introduced. For the piezoelectric shunt damping, a passive shunt circuit composed of inductors and a load resistor is connected to the piezoelectric patch mounted on the panel structure. An electrical impedance model is introduced for the system based on the measured electrical impedance, and the criteria for maximum energy dissipation at the shunt circuit is used to find the optimal shunt parameters. For multi-mode shunt damping, the shunt circuit is modified by the introduction of a block circuit. Also the optimal location of the piezoelectric patch is studied by finite element analysis in order to cause the maximum admittance from the patch for each mode of the structure. An acoustic test is performed for the panels and a remarkable noise reduction is obtained in multiple modes of the panel structure.

In this study, we fabricated plate-type shunt resistors with thermal stability by parallelly connecting metal alloy plates with positive temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and carbon nanotube (CNT) plates with negative TCR. The metal alloy plates, which were prepared by alloying Cu and Mn with a composition of 91 wt% of Cu and 9 wt% of Mn, showed around $800ppm/^{\circ}C$ of TCR, and the CNT plates prepared from the CNT solution by using the vacuum filtration method showed around $-800ppm/^{\circ}C$ of TCR. The shunt resistor that was fabricated by stacking metal alloy plates and CNT plates in this work showed about $46.93ppm/^{\circ}C$ of TCR. Therefore, we conclude that a shunt resistor with low TCR can be realized by simply adjusting the TCR of the metal alloy only, because the TCR of the CNT plate has an identical value.

Three nearly identical superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) were connected in series to increase the voltage ratings. A slight difference in the quench starting point of individual SFCL units produced significantly imbalanced power distribution when connected in series. The imbalance was successfully removed by connecting a shunt resistor to one SFCL in parallel. 1.2 kV SFCL was designed with five current limiting elements and two or three shunt resistors.

In this paper, the transmitted noise reduction of smart panels of which passive piezoelectric shunt damping is used, is experimentally studied. Shunt damping experiments are based on the measured electrical impedance model. A passive shunt circuit composed of inductors, and a load resistor is devised to dissipate the maximum energy into the joule heat energy. For multi-mode shunt damping, the shunt circuit is redesigned by adding a blocking circuit. Also the optimal location of the piezoelectric patch is studied by FEM in order to cause the maximum admittance from the patch for each mode of aluminum plate. In results, the transmitted sound pressure level of panels is efficiently reduced for multi-modes

We fabricated and tested a resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) operated at 3.8 ㎸ based on YBCO thin films. The SFCL was composed of 7 components connected in series. Each component was designed to be capable of current limiting at 600 V, and has a SiC shunt resistor ( $R_{s}$) of 40 Ω in Parallel. Short circuit tests were carried out fur 0 and 90 degree faults lasting fur 5 cycles. The test results showed that the 7 components were quenched simultaneously under the safe quenches and evenly shared the applied voltage. The SFCL successfully suppressed the fault currents below 94 $A_{peak}$ within the quarter cycle after fault.t.t.

This paper deals with a novel shunted actuator, which has a capability to suppress multi-mode vibration amplitudes by using a pair of piezoceramic patches. In order to describe the characteristic behaviors of shunted dampers connected with a series and a parallel resistor-negative capacitive branch circuit, the stiffness ratio and loss factor with respect to the non-dimensional frequency are considered. To obtain a guideline model of a piezo/beam system connected with a series and a parallel resistor-negative capacitor branch circuit, the governing equations of motion is derived through Hamiltons principle and a piezo sensor equation as well as a shunt damping matrix is developed. The theoretical analysis shows that the shunted actuator developed in this study can significantly reduce multiple-mode vibration amplitudes simultaneously over the whole structural frequency range.

According to the mechanical-electrical coupling characteristics and the electrical Impedance property of resistor-inductor-capacitor(RLC) series resonant circuit, the mechanical impedance analysis of a bimorph piezoceramic patch shunted with a series RLC resonant circuit is conducted. The displacement transfer function of a cantilever beam bonded with a piezoelectric shunt damping module is deduced in the case of single mode vibration of the beam. By the use of vibration damping theory of tuned mass damper system, the parameter optimization of piezoelectric shunt damping system is performed. The optimal resonant state of the shunting circuit can be obtained when the resister and conductor are optimally adjusted. Test results show that the vibration control effect as well improved with optimized piezoelectric shunt system.
