  • The shorting resistance (SR) of the PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) polymer membrane is an important indicator of the durability of the membrane. When SR decreases, shorting current (SC) increases, reducing durability and performance. When SR becomes less than about 0.1 kΩ·㎠, shorting occurs, the temperature rises rapidly, and MEA(Membrane Electrode Assembly) is burned to end stack operation. In order to prevent shorting, we need to control the SR, so the conditions affecting the SR were studied. There were differences in the SR measurement methods, and the SR measurement method, which improved the DOE(Department of Energy) and NEDO(New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) method, was presented. It was confirmed that the SR decreases as the relative humidity, temperature and cell compression pressure increase. In the final stage of the accelerated durability evaluation process of the polymer membrane, SR rapidly decreased to less than 0.1 kΩ·㎠, and the hydrogen permeability became higher than 15 mA/㎠. After dismantling the MEA, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) analysis showed that a lot of platinum was distributed inside the membrane.

  • This paper presents a novel method to reduce the size of microstrip patch antennas using shorting post and spiral shape. The spiral conductor shape of the proposed shorted patch antennas increases the length of the current patch for a given area. Two spiral shaped patch antennas with shorting post operating at 700 MHz bands are investigated experimentally.

  • In this paper, we deal with the development of an optimal design program for a dual-band of 0.92 GHz and 2.45 GHz with shorting pin and slot by using evolution strategy. the optimal shorting pin, coaxial feed and H-shaped patch are determined by using an optimal design program based on the evolution strategy. To achieve this, an interface program between a commercial EM analysis tool and the optimal design program is constructed for implementing the evolution strategy technique that seeks a global optimum of the objective function through the iterative design process consisting of variation and reproduction. The resonance frequencies of the dual-band antenna yielded by the optimal design program are 0.92 GHz and 2.45 GHz that show a good agreement to the design target values.

  • In this paper, a shorting pin and slot-loaded microstrip patch antenna is designed and fabricated. A shorting pin and slots are used for harmonic suppression on an inset fed antenna. A shorting pin and slot properties are analyzed by cavity model of the rectangular patch and the characteristics of the designed antenna are described. The designed antenna provides a gain of 7 dBi at the fundamental frequency, 5.8 GHz. In the second and third harmonic frequencies, the proposed antenna has gain suppression properties of -3.3 dB and -14.3 dB at each harmonic frequency, respectively.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of the electromagnetically coupled small broadband disk-loaded monopole antenna with multiple shorting pins. The electromagnetically coupled monopole antenna can achieve broad bandwidth by controlling resonant frequency of the rectangular disk-loaded monopole and a probe with the spiral strip line monopole. The number and arrangement of the shorting pin affect the capacitance of the disk. The variation of the capacitance changes resonant frequency of the antenna, and therefore, its electrical sizes and frequency bandwidth are also affected. The antenna with three shorting pins has a volume of $0.094\lambda_0{\times}0.094\lambda_0{\times}0.094\lambda_0$ in electrical length and the frequency bandwidth of $26.8\%\;for\;VSWR\leq2$ with the center frequency at 2.556 GHz.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of a double-cone broadband antenna with compact and three-dimensional structure that can be used in UWB system. The theoretical analysis is conducted using a finite difference time domain(FDTD) method. The parameters are the radius, a height of broadband double-cone antennas with shorting plate, and the number of plates on a ground plane. This paper examines influence of structural parameters on return loss. The results show that a condition for an optimum structure of broadband double-cone antennas with shorting plate exists. It also shows that the broadband double-cone antennas with shorting plate have radiation patterns similar to those of a dipole antenna. To verify the theoretical analysis, computed results are compared to experimental results.

  • In this paper, a dual band H-shaped microstrip patch antenna is designed for RFID application. Using shorting pin and H shaped for dual resonators and control dual frequency independently. The antenna shows a good performance at the frequency, 912MHz and 2.45GHz for the radiation characteristic and input impedance matching, as well. The reflection is lower than -10dB and a good directivity higher than 3dB is achieved for both frequency.

  • A modified half wavelength loaded line antenna is designed and implemented for mobile terminal applications. The antenna is constructed with a radiating element of half wavelength loaded line structure, dielectric substrate, feeding post and two shorting posts on the experimental PCB. The shorting posts are located at each side of the radiating element and lumped inductance elements are on between each shorting post and ground of PCB. By controlling value of inductors, one can adjust resonant frequency and input impedance respectively. Within inductance value of 12 nH, the antenna can have wide operating range of $1,470\~2,660\;MHz$ and good impedance matching. The measured peak gains are between -0.45 dBi and 2.03 dBi for the operating band.

  • A novel folded dipole type microstrip patch antenna designed for ultrahigh frequency (UHF) band radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is presented in this paper, which can be used on the metallic objects. The presented antenna is fabricated on a very thin Rogers 5880 substrate with a thickness of 0.508 mm. The structure consists of two folded dipole and two symmetrical shorting pins placed at both sides of feed point. An adjustable frequency response can be easy obtained via modify the location and radius of the shorting pins. The antenna has been analyzed by full wave simulations soft. The simulated bandwidth is about 67.2 MHz, which covers the Europe and North America UHF RFID frequency range. A manufactured prototype has been fabricated and measured to demonstrate the antenna performances. The simulation results agree with the measurement data well. The measured maximum reading range of the prototype can be reached 4.1 m in free space, and 3.2 m on a metal plate whose size is $150{\times}150{\times}8mm^3$.

  • This paper presents a novel feeding structure of the triple-band internal antenna which covers CELLVLAR/DCS/US-PCS bands. The proposed antenna consists of a U-slot patch radiator with a shorting post connected with ground plane and symmetric feeding lines with respective a feeding and shorting posts on both faces of the fixed FR-4 substrate. Through the simulation and experimental results, the proposed antenna is confirmed to have the features of less interference with a human head/body, broad bandwidth, desirable radiation patterns and efficiency for triple-band applications.
