  • The effective tracking area of ultra short baseline (USBL) systems strongly relates to the safety of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). This problem has not been studied previously. A method for determining the effective tracking area using acoustic theory is proposed. Ray acoustic equations are used to draw rays which ascertain the effective space. The sonar equation is established in order to discover the available range of the USBL system and the background noise level using sonar characteristics. The available range defines a hemisphere like enclosure. The overlap of the effective space with the hemisphere is the effective area for USBL systems tracking AUVs. Lake and sea trials show the proposed method's validity.

  • In order to design the conceptual configuration of the short-range ballistic missile, the authors have established an optimization problem considering various aspects such as volume, aerodynamics, propulsion, structure, stability, and flight trajectory. For this purpose, the existing missile cases were analyzed and the design conditions and performance indices were derived. The performance of the whole system was analyzed by integrating each subsystem's model. Through the design example, we analyzed the relationship between various design variables and final performances.

  • The local structural states of amorphous alloys have been depicted previously via short-range orders (SROs). However, the concept of SROs alone is inadequate and sometimes insufficient to explain the structure-property relation of the amorphous alloys. In this study, we propose new types of medium-range building structures that affect the mechanical properties, plasticity in particular. Using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and the Voronoi tessellation method, we demonstrate a three-dimensional configuration of icosahedral medium-range orders (I-MROs) and elucidate how these icosahedral orders evolve by the application of shear deformation. It was observed that the structural stability of the icosahedral orders relies largely on how they are linked via percolation and this linking is explained in detail.

  • In this paper, we suggest the development of object detection systems for the safety of the ship through the study of the properties of short-range radar. Many of the short-range radars developed for special purpose like cars has cheaper price advantages but it is not proper to every application. In order to overcome such obstacles we need to analysis data from experiments in various environments and feature analysis of the device is essential. Also, the data clustering algorithms to display correct classified moving objects is necessary. In this paper we propose the advanced fast moving object detection system using short range radars with better detection accuracy. And we proposed a clustering algorithm using the value of the RCS and the speed and trajectory information of the radar data that are reflected.

  • In this paper, we investigate interference between short-range radiocommunication devices(SRDs) with frequency hopping spread spectrum(FHSS) and direct sequence spread spectrum(DSSS) methods when they are in the same frequency bands. In order to analyze interference from unwanted emission of SRD with DSSS to that of FHSS, Monte-carlo(MC) simulation method is employed and interference probabilities are calculated. We simulate interference scenarios in accordance with several duty cycles and bandwidths. It is also assumed that the propagation model is free space. The effect of distance between interfering transmitter and victim receiver is analyzed and bit error rate(BER) is simulated. From the interference analysis results, it is shown that duty cycle affects compatibility more than band-width does. Also, we can make sure of the separation distance which satisfies BER criterion when there are only one interfering transmitter and multiple interfering transmitters.

  • In this paper, we propose a real-time two-dimensional bar code detection system even at long range using a vision technique. We first perform short-range detection, and then long-range detection if the short-range detection is not successful. First, edge map generation, image binarization, and connect component labeling (CCL) are performed in order to select a region of interest (ROI). After interpolating the selected ROI using bilinear interpolation, a location symbol pattern is detected as the same as for short-range detection. Finally, the symbol pattern is arranged by applying inverse perspective transformation to localize bar codes. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system successfully detects bar codes at two or three times longer distance than existing ones even at indoor environment.

  • In the present work a methodology to minimize short channel effects (SCEs) by modulating the effective channel length is proposed to design 25 nm single and double gate-source/drain underlap MOSFETs. The analysis is based on the evaluation of the ratio of effective channel length to natural/ characteristic length. Our results show that for this ratio to be greater than 2, steeper source/drain doping gradients along with wider source/drain roll-off widths will be required for both devices. In order to enhance short channel immunity, the ratio of source/drain roll-off width to lateral straggle should be greater than 2 for a wide range of source/drain doping gradients.

  • This paper introduces a GP(Genetic Programming) based robust technique for temperature compensation in short-range prediction. Development of an efficient MOS(Model Output Statistics) is necessary to correct systematic errors of the model, because forecast models do not reliably determine weather conditions. Most of MOS use a linear regression to compensate a prediction model, therefore it is hard to manage an irregular nature of prediction. In order to solve the problem, a nonlinear and symbolic regression method using GP is suggested. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of the estimation by a GP based nonlinear MOS for 3 days temperatures in Korean regions. This method is then compared to the UM model and has shown superior results. The training period of 2007-2009 summer is used, and the data of 2010 summer is adopted for verification.

  • 70GHz-band high gain array antenna is developed for automotive short range radar sensor. In Short-rangeradar, the gain must be high in order to increase the resolution, and the angle width must be set to secure the field of view(Fov). The proposed antenna operates at 76~81GHz and satisfies angle width $60^{\circ}$, antenna gain 15dB and the input reflection coefficient of less than -10dB within the operating frequency. Wave guide WR-10 was used to measure the antenna and results similar to the simulation results were obtained.
