  • Background : Platycodon grandiflorum radix used as a therapeutic agent for lung and respiratory diseases in traditional Korean medicine. The saponin and sugar content in P. grandiflorum root is dependent on the drying temperature and method. In this study, we investigated saponins and antioxidant contents in dried P. grandiflorum roots either not cut or cut to different lengths. Methods and Results : P. grandiflorum roots were either cut to 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 cm in length or left uncut. They were dried at $45^{\circ}C$ and the effect of antioxidant substances, antioxidant ability, and saponin content were investigated. P. grandiflorum roots rapidly dried out when cut to short lengths. The saponin contents (platycodin D, polygalacin D, and deapioplatycodin D) was highest in the uncut P. grandiflorum roots. When the cut lengths were long, the levels of polyphenolic compound increased. However, 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities were higher in the samples cut to shorter lengths. Conclusions : These results suggested that the saponin and antioxidant content of P. grandiflorum roots could be maximized by controlling the drying rate of the roots via adjustments to the root cutting length.

  • An elastic model is developed to predict the average thermal residual stresses in the matrix and fiber of a misoriented short fiber composite. The thermal residual stresses are induced by the mismatch in the coefficient of the thermal expansion of the matrix and fiber when the composite is subjected to a uniform temperature change. The model considers two special cases of fiber misorientation ; two-dimensional in-plane and three-dimensional axisymmetric. The analytical formulation of the model is based on Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and is nuque in that it is able to account for interactions among fibers. The model is more general than past models and it is able to treat prior analyses of the simpler composite systems as extram cases. The present model is to investigate the effects of fiber volume fraction, distribution type, distribution cut-off angle, and aspect ratio on thermal residual stress for both in-plane and axisymmetric fiber misorientation. Fiber volum fraction, aspect ratio, and disturbution cut-off angle are shown to have more significant effects on the magnitude of the thermal residual stress than fiber distrubution type for both in-plane and axisymmetric misorientation.

  • Tritium removal from tritiated heavy water in a PHWR is the most effective way in reducing workers' internal dose and radioactivity emissions from Wolsong NPP. The optimum design of the Wolsong TRF (Tritium Removal Facility) was carried out using an approximate short-cut method with an assumption that the TRF, designed to extract 8 MCi per year of elemental tritium from a heavy oater feedstream, uses Liquid Phase Catalytic Exchange (LPCE) front-end process and Cryogenic Distillation (CD) process.

  • We study on the privacy preserving data mining, PPDM for short, by using randomization. The theoretical PPDM based on the secure multi-party computation techniques is not practical for its computational inefficiency. So we concentrate on a practical PPDM, especially randomization technique. We survey various privacy measures and study on the privacy preserving mining of association rules by using randomization. We propose a new randomization operator, binomial selector, for privacy preserving technique of association rule mining. A binomial selector is a special case of a select-a-size operator by Evfimievski et al.[3]. Moreover we present some simulation results of detecting an appropriate parameter for a binomial selector. The randomization by a so-called cut-and-paste method in [3] is not efficient and has high variances on recovered support values for large item-sets. Our randomization by a binomial selector make up for this defects of cut-and-paste method.

  • This paper addresses the effects of extreme rainfall on the stability of cut slopes in Yen Bai city, Northern Viet Nam. In this area, natural slopes are excavated to create places for infrastructures and buildings. Cut slopes are usually made without proper site investigations; the design is mostly based on experience. In recent years, many slope failures have occurred along these cuts especially in rainy seasons, resulting in properties damaged and loss of lives. To explain the reason that slope failure often happens during rainy seasons, this research analyzed the influence of extreme rainfalls, initial ground conditions, and soil permeability on the changes of pore water pressure within the typical slope, thereafter determining the impact of these changes on the slope stability factor of safety. The extreme rainfalls were selected based on all of the rainfalls triggering landslide events that have occurred over the period from 1960 to 2009. The factor of safety (FS) was calculated using Bishop's simplified method. The results show that when the maximum infiltration capacity of the slope top soil is less than the rainfall intensity, slope failures may occur 14 hours after the rain starts. And when this happens, the rainfall duration is the deciding factor that affects the slope FS values. In short, cut slopes in Yen Bai may be stable in normal conditions after the excavation, but under the influence of tropical rain storms, their stability is always questionable.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of the Comet assay, which is widely used for the identification of irradiated meats, to detect irradiated beef cut, ground beef, and Tteokgalbi during freezing storage. Gamma-irradiation significantly increased the DNA damage in frozen beef cut and ground beef samples. Among those, DNA nuclei of samples irradiated with absorbed doses of 1kGy or more showed typical comet-shaped damage, convincing that the samples were irradiated. Meanwhile, DNA nuclei in non-irradiated beef cut and ground beef samples were also damaged according to storage time. In particular, since the damage of DNA nuclei in the non-irradiated samples frozen for three months was similar to that of samples irradiated with a dose of 0.5 kGy, it was considered difficult to detect whether these samples were irradiated by Comet assay analysis. Likewise, gamma-irradiation of Tteokgalbi increased DNA damage. However, significant damage to DNA nuclei was observed even in the non-irradiated samples. Therefore, the application of the analysis method to determine whether the Tteokgalbi sample was irradiated was not appropriate. In conclusion, these results suggest that Comet assay could be limitedly applied only to fresh meat with a short storage period and minimal processing.

  • This study aims to conceptually identify the circular causal-relationship which is structured between downsizing and technological innovation in organization. First, through the literature review concerning downsizing and (technological) innovations, we have outlined the conceptual building blocks and research boundaries in this field. Second, we used system thinking method to accomplish our research purpose. The research findings are as follows. First, the promotion of financial resources by downsizing have trade-off relations that have negative of effects in short terms, but positive effects in long time. Second, workforce reduction by downsizing usually has negative influence on employees. Third, capital reduction by downsizing generates not only the climates of cost-cut but also the fact that although the climates may increase economic performance in short terms, it may interrupt technological innovations in long terms. In conclusion, this theses suggests that the relationship of downsizing and technological innovations have complex causal and feedback structures. Therefore, the results of this thesis propose that the argument or practices of downsizing with partial emphasis is very dangerous. Finally some limitations are also discussed.

  • A precedure for recovering surface displacement from a time series of pressure measured by a pressure gage in a shallow water (that is, FFTM, LCM. IWM) is investigated with respect to a proper cut-off-frequency of a frequency response function for the accurate recovery of wave height and period. The authors examined the applicability of above mentioned three transformation procedures through field observations and laboratory experiments and the following results are obtained. i) The cut-off-frequency of the frequency response function used in FFTM is deeply depend on both the frequency response of the pressure sensor and the water depth at the sensor. In this study, a relatively accurate surface displacement can be recovered when the frequency response function is cut off at the frequency corresponding to kh=3.0 where k is a wave number at the depth of h. The frequency response function in the region higher than the cut-off-frequency is set constant to be the value at the cut-off-frequency. ii) The transformed surface displacements by LCM are affected by the small waves of short periods included in the measured pressure. It is found that pressure variation whose local frequency is higher than kh=1.5 has to be neglected to recover surface displacement sufficiently. iii) In IWM, the linear pressure response function is usually utilized by multiplying a coefficient N which is a function of the frequency (or kh) and takes a value around unity. However, in this study, a constant value of N(=1.0) gives a relatively accurate recovery of surface displacements.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel test method to effectively detect hard and soft faults in CMOS 2-stage op-amps. The proposed method uses a very high frequency sinusoidal signal that exceeds unit gain bandwidth to maximize the fault effects. Since the proposed test method doesn't require any complex algorithms to generate the test pattern and uses only a single test pattern to detect all target faults, therefore test costs can be much reduced. The area overhead is also very small because the CUT is converted to a unit gain amplifier. Using HSPICE simulation, the results indicated a high degree of fault coverage for hard and soft faults in CMOS 2-stage op-amps. To verify this proposed method, we fabricated a CMOS op-amp that contained various short and open faults through the Hyundai 0.65-um 2-poly 2-metal CMOS process. Experimental results for the fabricated chip have shown that the proposed test method can effectively detect hard and soft faults in CMOS op-amps.

  • In this paper, we propose the built-in current testing circuit for improving reliability As the integrated CMOS circuits in a chip are increased, the testability on design and fabrication should be considered to reduce the cost of testing and to guarantee the reliability In addition, the high degree of integration makes more failures which are different from conventional static failures and introduced by the short between transistor nodes and the bridging fault. The proposed built-in current testing method is useful for detecting not only these failures but also low current level failures and faster than conventional method. In normal mode, the detecting circuit is turned off to eliminate the degradation of CUT(Circuits Under Testing). The differential input stage in detecting circuit prevents the degradation of CUT in test mode. It is expected that this circuit improves the quality of semiconductor products, the reliability and the testability.
