  • A novel kind of switched reluctance motor (SRM) with short flux path is proposed in this paper. Phase excitation in the SRM gives short flux paths, hence reducing the magnetomotive force required to drive the machine, resulting in significant reduction of copper wire and core losses compared to the typical SRM with diametric circulation of magnetic flux. To verify the performance, the characteristics analysis of a double-stator SRM, a 6/5 SRM with C-core structure, and a 4/5 two-phase SRM, which all have short flux paths, and a comparison with conventional SR motors are executed. The comparison demonstrates that the proposed motor offers some advantages in terms of torque and efficiency.

  • This paper presents a design and characteristics analysis of novel 2-phase 4/3 switched reluctance motor (SRM) with short flux path for an air-blower application. The desired air-blower is unidirectional application, and requires a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone. In order to get a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone during phase commutation, asymmetric inductance characteristic with non-uniform air-gap is considered. The proposed motor could be started at any rotor position with high efficiency drive. The proposed 2-phase 4/3 SRM is verified by finite element method analysis.

  • A novel 6/5 switched reluctance motor (SRM) with short flux path is presented in this paper. The concept of this proposed motor is a novel SR motor with six stator and five rotor poles. The stator is constructed with three independent and physically separate C-core segments, and the rotor is composed of five poles. This motor, with a new selection for the number of stator/rotor poles, achieves a short flux path, which reduces the magnetomotive force required to drive the motor. To verify the performance of the proposed motor, a comparison with conventional SR motors with the same dimensions is executed. The comparison demonstrates that the proposed motor offers better performance in terms of maximum torque production. Furthermore, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Matlab/Simulink software are used to predict and simulate the performance of the proposed motor.

  • This paper presents a design of a 2-phase segmental stator type 4/3 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for air-blower application. The air-blower requires only one direction rotation, high rotor speed without torque dead-zone. In order to satisfy the requirements of the load, the rotor of the 4/3 proposed SRM is designed with wider rotor pole arc and non-uniform air-gap is applied on the rotor shape. With a special rotor structure, the motor generates a wider positive torque region and has no torque dead-zone. The stator of the proposed SRM is constructed with two segmental C-cores, and there are no magnetic connections between 2 C-cores. The flux follows in a short closed loop in each C-core and has no reversal flux in the stator. The static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed motor are analyzed by the finite element method (FEA) and Matlab-Simulink, respectively. In order to verify the design, a prototype of the proposed motor has manufactured for laboratory test. The performance of the proposed motor is verified by the simulation and experimental results.

  • In this paper, two types of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) with segmental rotors are presented in detail. One is 6/5 segmental rotor type; the other is 12/8 segmental rotor type. Both motors have the same stator, rotor and winding configurations. The stator is constructed with special stator poles in which the exciting and auxiliary poles are designed exclusively. The rotor is constructed from a series of discrete segments, each of which is embedded in the magnetic isolator. The windings are only wound on the exciting poles, and no windings are wound on the auxiliary poles. These structures result in short flux path and high flux-linkage utilization in the proposed motors, which may reduce the magneto motive force (MMF) requirement and increase the electrical utilization of the machine. To verify the proposed two structures, the characteristics of the proposed two types are analyzed and compared with that of conventional 12/8 SRM.
