  • The effect of Si content in welding wires on spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena was studied. In MAG welding using 80% Ar-20% $CO_2$ shielding gas, spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena were varied with Si content of wire. With increasing Si content, the spattering ratio and the ratio of large size spatter $(d\geq1.0mm)$ were increased. The increase of Si content in molten metal made surface tension increase due to reduction of oxygen content, which resulted from deoxidizing action of silicon. The increase of surface tension resulted in unstable transfer phenomena and arc instability in both short circuit and spray region. With changing Si content of wire, spattering characteristics and droplet transfer phenomena was directly influenced by the variation of surface tension, compared with the effect of arc stability.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an optimal model, using existing models, that is able to estimate the amount of spatter utilizing artificial neural network in the short circuit transfer mode of gas metal arc (GMA) welding. The amount of spatter generated during welding can become a barometer which represents the process stability of metal transfer in GMA welding, and it depends on some factors which constitute a periodic waveforms of welding current and arc voltage in short circuit GMA welding. So, the 12 factors, which could express the characteristics for the waveforms, and the amount of spatter are used as input and output variables of the neural network, respectively. Two neural network models to estimate the amount of spatter are proposed: A neural network model, where arc extinction is not considered, and a combined neural network model where it is considered. In order to reduce the calculation time it take to produce an output, the input vector and hidden layers for each model are optimized using the correlation coefficients between each factor and the amount of spattcr. The est~mation performance of each optimized model to the amount of spatter IS assessed and compared to the est~mation performance of the model proposed by Kang. Also, through the evaluation for the estimation performance of each optimized model, it is shown that the combined neural network model can almost perfectly predict the amount of spatter.

  • A weld quality assessment method is proposed in this work, which can be applied to the short-circuit mode in GMAW. Information about the welding signal trajectory, distribution of the signal duration at each sub-regions and short-circuit frequency is used to evaluate the weld quality. The weighted penalty, which is determined experimentally, is imposed for each abnormal signal. Performance of the proposed method is compared with the Simpson's method under the conditions of shielding gas reduction, workpiece surface contamination and joint gap in the butt and fillet welds. Although the proposed method predicts the weld quality with reasonable accuracy, further modification and extension to other metal transfer modes are needed as a further study.

  • $CO_2$ gas shielded arc welding has been characterized with its harsh arc compared to Ar-based shielding gases and with its high level of spattere specially in welding current range of 250~300 amperes. In this range of welding current, the metal transfer mode showed to be changed from short circuit to globular with the increase of welding voltage resulting in so-called the transitional mode in which both modes of transfer appeared together. To characterize the transitional mode, the short circuit events were divided into two groups, i.e. normal short circuit (N.S.C) which has short circuit time $(t_s)$ over 2msec and instantaneous short circuit (I.S.C) of $t_s$$\leq$2msec. The experimental results showed that the number of N.S.C decreased almost linearly with the increase of welding voltage and appeared to be not related with spatter generation rate. However I.S.C became to be pronounced in the transitional condition and its number reached the maximum value at around 29.0 volts. Considering the relation with the spatter generation rate, it was found that the number of I.S.C had a very strong correlation with the spatter generation rate of the transitional condition. It was further demonstrated that spatter generation rate decreased quite linearly with the decrease of I.S.C frequency. It implies that I.S.C is the most important waveform factor controlling the spatter generation of the transitional mode, i.e. in the middle range of welding current. Based on these results, It was discussed that in the transitional mode the basic concept of waveform control for suppressing spatter generation would be different from the one applied for typical short circuit transfer mode of low welding current.

  • The object of this study is to examine the effect of short circuit time ratio (SCTR) and current rise delay time (Td) on the spatter generation at low and medium current range in $CO_2$ welding. The spatter was evaluated by the weight generated in the welding of bead-on-plate for 30 seconds (3 times). Td was varied by order of 0, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 msec. At each Td, the short circuit time ratio was varied by the output voltage of the welding power source. In the low current range, it was found that the optimum SCTR was 20~25%, and the minimum spatter generation weight was obtained in the case of Td=0.4msec and SCTR=22% even though the remarkable difference was not showed by the application of Td. In the medium current range, it was confirmed that the arc was stable though the SCTR was increased from 20% to 40% by the control of current wave. Spatter generation weight depended on the variation of Td, and the lowest value of spatter generation weight occurred at Td=0.8~1.2msec.

  • For analyzing the characteristics of arc welding processes, an algorithm is necessary to determine the metal transfer mode, arc stability and weld quality. In this study, the weight of spatter during welding was selected for determining the arc stability, which is very relevant to the occurrence of spatter. Weld spatter occurs mainly at the moment when the short circuit is formed and also when it is broken causing the arc to restrike. Based on this fact, the arc stability can be determined by finding the suitable parameters of welding current and arc voltage which influence the weight of spatter. Through various welding experiments, the peak current, the arcing time, the short circuit time, the current and its slope at the start of short circuit were found mainly to influence the weight of spatter. For the convenient usage, an index was proposed by combining all these parameters. It was found that the index is very effective for determining the arc stability.

  • In this study, we fabricated the transparent photovoltaic device using 2-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides and investigated the transparency and photovoltaic characteristics. P-n heterojunction was formed by mechanical exfoliation and aligned transfer method on the transparent sheet using n-type $MoS_2$ and p-type $WSe_2$. Our transparent photovoltaic device exhibited the open-circuit voltage of ~ 0.15 V and the short-circuit current of 0.48 nA under illumination of white light.

  • The relationship between GMA welding conditions and the bead shape of overlay weld was studied by using ${\Phi}1.6mm$ hypo-eutectic metal-cored wire designed for hardfacing against the severe metal-to-metal wear. As the welding voltage increased, the dilution also increased but the sudden drop of dilution was observed at $30{\sim}33V$. It was considered to be due to the decrease of penetration resulting from the change of transfer mode, from short circuit to spray. It was also found that the behavior of penetration with welding current was dependant on the transfer mode. The short circuit mode exerted the penetration to decrease while the spray mode did it to increase with increase of welding current. The former was considered to be responsible for the remarkable decrease in dilution at low welding voltage region. The change of transfer mode also had an effect on the behavior of bead width with welding current but it did not on the bead spreadability defined as W/H ratio. It was considered that the optimal welding conditions for multi-pass overlay welding could be obtained from the bead spreadability suitable for bead lapping and the dilution as low as possible in the spray transfer mode.
