In order to analyze the stress distribution and stress concentration factors in composite materials, especially, in the short fiber of the reinforced composite materials by photoelastic method, it is necessary to develop the photoelastic model material having short fibers with arbitrary size and orientation. In this paper, the orthotropic photoelastic model material having short fibers for the transparent type photoelastic device was developed by the embedded corrosion fiber method. It was found that the model material was satisfactory to the properties of photoelastic model material, and also that the embedded corrosion fiber method can be employed for developing a model material with arbitrary size and direction to analyze the stress distribution and crack problems of composite materials.
As a fundamental study to develop the retaining wall of new type, short-fibers are mixed with soils and a series of compaction tests and triaxial compression tests for short-fiber reinforced soils are performed. From the results of compaction tests, optimum moisture content is increased and maximum dry unit weight is decreased with fiber mixing ratio. When 60mm fibrillated fiber of 0.2$\%$ mixing ratio is added to SM soil, strength increment of short-fiber reinforced soil is above 1.2 times compared to soil only. Strength increment shows maximum value for composite reinforced soil, namely, soil+short-fiber+planar reinforcement. But in case of mixing with ML soil and short-fiber, the strength of short-fiber reinforced soil is nearly the same as soil only. Internal angle of short-fiber reinforced soil is increased about $2\~3$ degrees and cohesion is also increased above 10kPa compared to soil only. Therefore, it is judged that short-fiber is a good material to strengthen the soil.
Residual stress distribution in injection-molded short fiber composites was determined using layer-removal method. Polysterene with 3 vol% carbon fibers was injection-molded into the tensile specimen. With milling machine layer-removal process was conducted and the curvature data were acquired. Treuting and Read analysis which is assuming isotropic material, and White analysis considering anisotropy due to the fiber orientation were used to calculate residual stress of the flow direction through the thickness direction and compared with each other.
The appearance of many Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) constructions look like ordinary steel construction, because GFRP has been imitated by the same way with the traditional steel's cross section as well as connection system. In terms of detachable connection, there was not enough appropriate option of GFRP connection, such as a traditional bolt connection for steel and wood structures. Most of all, from material characteristic of GFRP related to the deficient ductility, the shearstress principle of GFRP s not proper for the material property, which causes ineffective and not economic application of material. With this research problem, the innovative and detachable onnection system, which is more considered with appropriate material characteristic for FRP, is developed. Not only short time but also long time research with various connection variations is carried out.
In order to investigate the effect of the ceramic reinforcements on the wear properties of aluminum bronze composites, Cu-8wt%Al aluminum bronze alloys reinforced with the Saffil alumina short fiber were produced by the powder metallurgical method and tested by a pin-ondisc wear testing machine. The wear surfaces of the pin specimens and discs, wear debris, and the cross sections of the wear specimens were observed by SEM. The wear mechanism according to various wear conditions and the change of microstructure in the composites were also discussed. In the results, the reinforcement of the composites with alumina short fiber was very effective at the higher applied load over 10N. The material transportation to the counter disc was observed in the alloy specimens without reinforcements. However, the composites reinforced with ceramic particles and fibers showed the resistance against the material transportation.
A simulation to investigate the thermal behavior in short fiber or whisker reinforced composite materials has been performed for the application to the thermoelastic stress analysis using Finite Element Method (FEM). To obtain the internal field quantities of composite material, the procedure of micromechanical modeling and the principle of virtual work were implemented. For the numerical illustration, an aligned axisymmetric single fiber model has been employed to assess field quantities. It was found that the proposed simulation methodology for thermoelastic stress analysis is applicable to the complicated inhomogeneous solid for the investigation of micromechanical thermoelastic behavior.
To analyze the settlement characteristics of short-fiber reinforced soil(SFRS), which will be used as a new backfill material of reinforced retaining wall, under simulated railroad loading, a series of tests with loading condition of 5 Hz frequency and 500,000 cycles were performed. The materials used for tests are soils with SM or ML type, and polypropylene short-fibers with mono-filament(PPM) or fibrillated type(PPF). From the tests, average plastic settlement is low at PPF38(0.3%)(abbreviation of PPF with 38mm length and mixing ratio 0.3%), PPF38(0.5%), PPM60(0.2%) for SFRS using SM soil and at PPF38(0.3%), PPF60(0.2%) for SFRS using ML soil. Elastic settlement is low at PPM60(0.2%) for SFRS using SM soil and at PPM60(0.5%) for SFRS using ML soil.
Fluff (lint, fiber fly) generation, especially related to yarn structure, was investigated. Research centered on the fiber length related to fluff generation during the knitting process. Short fiber length composing yarn structure was a main source of the fluff shedding. High quality spun yarn with longer length of fiber was recommended to the high speed knitting industry in order to reduce process troubles such as yarn breakage, etc. but the cost is doubtable to the manufacturers. A trial to reduce the fluff trouble by using chemicals to hold the short fiber on the surface of the yam was suggested and the research showed a positive effect to the problem. However, another factors including a by-product of chemical residue and searching more feasible material need to be concerned for the future research.
A continuum analysis of the evolution of plasticity and Bauschinger effect in a short fiber reinforced metal matrix composite, based on the FEM solution for a single fiber model has been performed to investigate the strengthening behavior. The evolution of matrix field quantities during one cycle of fully reversed loading have been examined in detail. The results indicate that the role of constrained matrix flow in generating different levels of matrix triaxiality during forward and reversed loading provides an important contribution to the developement of the Bauschinger effect in the metal matrix composite. Therefore, even when the plastic flow of the matrix material follows on isotropic hardening behavior, the Bauschinger effect is predicted for the composite material.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is often used to identify local stress/strain concentrations where a component is likely to fail. In order to reduce the degree of strain concentration, component thickness can be increased in those regions, or a stronger material can be used. In short fiber reinforced composite materials, strength and stiffness can be increased through proper fiber alignment. The field-aided microtailoring (FAiMTa) process is one promising method for doing this. FAiMTa uses principles of dielectrophoresis to preferentially align particles or fibers within a matrix. To achieve the preferred fiber orientation, an interdigitated electrode network must be integrated into the mold halves which can be fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) processes. However, the process of determining the preferred fiber arrangements and electrode locations can be very challenging. This paper presents algorithms to semi-automate the interdigitated electrode design process. The algorithm has been implemented in the Solidworks CAD system and is demonstrated in this paper.
