An unsteady-state moisture diffusion through cellulosic fibers in paper was characterized from the moisture sorption experiment and the mathematical modeling. The sorption experiment was conducted by exposing thin dry paper specimens to a constant temperature-humidity environment. Oven dried blotting papers and filter papers were used as test samples and the gains of their weights were constantly monitored and recorded as a function of sorption time. For a mathematical approach, the moisture transport was assumed to be an one-dimensional diffusion in thickness direction through the geometrically symmetric structure of paper. The model was asymptotically simplified with a short-term approximation. It gave us a new insight into the moisture uptake phenomena as a function of square root of sorption time. The fiber-phase moisture diffusivities(FPMD) of paper samples were then determined by correlating the experimental data with the unsteady-state diffusion model obtained. Their values were found to be on the order of magnitude of $10^{-6}-10^{-7}cm^2$/min., which were equivalent to the hypothetical effective diffusion coefficients at the limit of zero porosity. The moisture sorption curve predicted from the model fairly agreed with that obtained from the experiment at some limited initial stages of the moisture uptake process. The FPMD value of paper significantly varied depending upon the current moisture content of paper. The mean FPMD was about 0.7-0.8 times as large as the short-term approximated FPMD.

A semi-solid alloy in which solid and liquid phase are co-existing is obtained by strirring of Al7075 molten metal. A semi-solid alloy is dependent on the corresponding temperature within the solid-liquid range, and the process parameters should be controlled accurately to obtain the homogeneous semi-solid alloy. The possibility o homogeneous fiber-reinforce aluminum alloy by addition of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ short fibers with vigorous agitation was investigated. The billet of composite materials was fabricated by squeeze casting, and homogeneous dipersion state of fibers in billet of fabricated metal matrix composites was observed. A slurry of semi-solid short fiber metal matrix composites is used in the direct rolling process, and this process showed the fabrication possibility of metal matrix composite sheets. The fabricated sheet was tested regarding vickers hardness, elongation and micro-structure. It has become clear that mashy state processing and working are very useful to obtain parts of composites material closed to near net shape.
Long-term stability of two type geogrids were evaluated. Membrane drawn type geogrid showed the exponential type tensile property and textile type geogrid showed the rapid increase of tensile property closer toward the break point. Short term accelerated creep test was done for textile type geogrid but done for membrane drawn type geogrid at ambient temperature because of its thermal property. Creep strain for membrane drawn type geogrid was larger than the ultimate tensile strain by tensile test. Reduction factor by creep deformation of textile type geogrid was smaller than that of membrane type geogrid. From this result, it was seen that the textile type geogrid is more stable than membrane type geogrid by creep deformation.
We propose to implement cost-effectively a high-speed short-haul interconnect by transmitting a 200-Gb/s/λ two-channel optical time-division-multiplexed signal generated by a carrier-suppressed optical pulse, which improves the robustness of the multiplexed signal to chromatic dispersion. The multiplexed 200-Gb/s signal is generated in the transmitter by combining two 100-Gb/s 4-level pulse-amplitude-modulated signals (generated using the optical pulse and two Mach-Zehnder modulators). After the signal is transmitted over a fiber, it is amplified by a semiconductor optical amplifier and detected by a photodiode. The amplified spontaneous emission noise is eliminated by an optical band-pass filter. The transmitted signal is reconstructed by a 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output equalizer, which compensates for crosstalk. Due to the use of the carrier-suppressed optical pulse, the 200-Gb/s signal can be transmitted over fiber with a chromatic dispersion of 40 ps/nm.

Edible insects are gaining popularity as a potential future food source because of their high protein content and efficient use of space. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are noteworthy because they can be used as feed for various animals including reptiles, dogs, fish, chickens, and pigs. However, if the edible insect industry is to advance, we should use automation to reduce labor and increase production. Consequently, there is a growing demand for sensing technologies that can automate the evaluation of insect quality. This study used short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imaging to predict the proximate composition of dried BSFL, including moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and crude ash content. The larvae were dried at various temperatures and times, and images were captured using an SWIR camera. A partial least-squares regression (PLSR) model was developed to predict the proximate content. The SWIR-based hyperspectral camera accurately predicted the proximate composition of BSFL from the best preprocessing model; moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and crude ash content were predicted with high accuracy, with R2 values of 0.89 or more, and root mean square error of prediction values were within 2%. Among preprocessing methods, mean normalization and max normalization methods were effective in proximate prediction models. Therefore, SWIR-based hyperspectral cameras can be used to create automated quality management systems for BSFL.
The objective of this study was to apply the statistical technique known as design of experiments to optimize the % exhaustion variables for phthalocyanine dyeing of nylon fiber. In this study, a three-factor Central Composite Rotatable Design (CCRD) was used to establish the optimum conditions for the phthalocyanine reactive dyeing of nylon fiber. Temperature, pH and liquor ratio were considered as the variable of interest. Acidic solution with higher temperature and lower liquor ratio were found to be suitable conditions for higher % exhaustion. These three variables were used as independent variables, whose effects on % exhaustion were evaluated. Significant polynomial regression models describing the changes on % exhaustion and % fixation with respect to independent variables were established with coefficient of determination, R2, greater than 0.90. Close agreement between experimental and predicted yields was obtained. Optimum conditions were obtained using surface plots and Monte Carlo simulation techniques where maximum dyeing efficiency is achieved. The significant level of both the main effects and interaction was observed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach. Based on the statistical analysis, the results have provided much valuable information on the relationship between response variables and independent variables. This study demonstrates that the CCRD could be efficiently applied for the empirical modeling of % exhaustion and % fixation in dyeing. It also shows that it is an economical way of obtaining the maximum amount of information in a short period of time with least number of experiments.

In this paper, we investigated the compensation characteristics of distorted NRZ format and RZ format signal dependence on dispersion variation of each transmission section in 8-channel WDM system. The WDM system have two transmission sections of unequal length with respect to optical phase conjugator(OPC) position. We select highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) as a nonlinear medium of OPC in order to convert wideband signal waves to conjugated waves. First, we confirmed that RZ is better than NRZ as a modulation format for maintenance or stable performance, when total dispersion or both sections in WDM system is different each other. Also, we confirmed that total dispersion of the short length section must be smaller than that of the long length section in order to excellently compensate for NRZ format signal.

Whole, bast and core fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 were pulped under different pulping methods, thermomechanical and kraft pulping methods. The physical and optical properties of kenaf TMP(thermomechanical pulp) and KP(kraft pulp) handsheets were investigated and the results from the study are summarized as follows: Yields of TMP and KP were $77{\sim}87%\;and\;43{\sim}52%$, respectively. There was no significant change in apparent density between kenaf KP and USKP(unbleached softwood kraft pulp) but TMP showed a little lower apparent density. Bast pulp had the lowest apparent density regardless of pulping methods. Tensile strength of kenaf KP was higher than that of TMP but similar to that of USKP. Both TMP and KP handsheets of bast fraction showed the highest tear strengths among whole, bast, and core fractions. Core fraction showed the lowest tear strengths under different pulping methods. In general burst strength of kenaf pulp under different pulping methods was lower than that of USKP, and kenaf pulp had better stiffness than USKP. Brightness of kenaf KP and TMP was higher than that of USKP. There was no significant variation in opacity between kenaf pulp and USKP even though kenaf pulp showed a little lower opacity. The main difference in paper quality between the core fiber and bast fiber is derived from the fact that bast fiber is long and thin, whereas core fiber is short and thick.
To perform the realtime strain and fracture monitoring of the smart composite structures, two optical fiber sensor systems are proposed. The two types of the coherent sources were used for fracture signal detection - EDFA with FBG and EDFA with Fabry-Perot filter. These sources were coupled to EFPI sensors imbedded in composite specimens. To understand the characteristics of matrix crack signals, at first, we performed tensile tests using surface attached PZT sensors by changing the thickness and width of the specimens. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as short time Fourier transform (STFT) and wavelet transform (WT) for the quantitative evaluation of fracture signals. The experimental result shows the distinctive signal features in frequency domain due to the different specimen shapes. And, from the test of tensile load monitoring using optical fiber sensor systems, measured strain agreed with the value of electric strain gage and the fracture detection system could detect the moment of damage with high sensitivity to recognize the onset of micro-crack fracture signal.

Slurry treatments included peanut shell, palm golden fiber, almond hull, which was added 2% of the amount of slurry, and non-treatment control (n=4 each group). Levels of odorous compounds were measured from the liquid slurry incubated in $20^{\circ}C$ for 2 wk in chamber whose structure is similar to slurry pit. Concentration of phenols and indoles was higher (p<0.05) in control (48.4, 4.0 ppm) compared to almond hull (31.5, 1.4 ppm) or palm golden fiber (29.1, 1.6 ppm) group. Short chain fatty acid (SCFA) level was lowest (p<0.05) in control (2,121 ppm) but highest in peanut shell group (3,640 ppm). Branched chain fatty acid (BCFA) concentration was highest (p<0.05) in peanut shell (296 ppm), but lowest in almond hull (90 ppm). Taken together, concentration of odorous compounds was decreased by addition of almond hull in pig slurry by which crude fiber and non-digestible fiber (NDF) may act as a carbon source.
