A model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with an inter turn short fault is proposed using a deformed flux model. The deformed flux model includes not only the fault winding flux information but also the inductance variation of the healthy winding considering the configuration of the winding distribution. With the deformed flux model and the positive sequence current assumption, the proposed model is derived in the positive and negative sequence synchronous reference frame (SRF). The finite elements method (FEM) simulation is applied to validate the proposed PMSM model with inter turn short fault.
Power transformer shall be designed and constructed to withstand the mechanical and thermal stresses produced by external short circuits which include three-phase, single line to ground, double line-to-ground, and line-to-line faults on any one set terminals at a time. This paper presents the method of short-circuit test and means of evaluation during and after each test to judge the results of short-circuit tests.
Generally Short Circuit Test of transformers are tested according to IEEE std C57.12.00-2000, IEC 60076-5(2000-07), ES148(1998.6.26) or KS C4309(2003). But ES148(1998.6.26) is same as IEEE std C57. 12.00-2000 and KS C4309(2003) is revising coincidence with IEC 60076-5(2000-07). On this study condition of the transformers before short circuit test, calculation method for test current peak value, tolerance on the asymmetrical peak and r.m.s value, short circuit testing procedure, number of short circuit test, duration short circuit test, and detection of faults and evaluation of short circuit test result will be compared with ANSI and IEC.
The main cause of electrical fires are caused due to short circuit and open circuit. This is generates an instantaneous electric arc or spark accompanied with such electric faults. These arcs generate a pressed wire, contact badness, and a weakness in the wire coating etc.. This research proposes a protection circuit to prevent open-phase accident due to contact failure of electromagnetic contactor, tracking arc fault, open-phase within the three-phase electrical control panel which is the most commonly applied in the industry. The proposed circuit also alarms and cuts off of power system when electrical faults occurs. In addition, the proposed circuit is validated by various electric accident simulator.
A down-scaled simulator is developed to simulate typical faults in induction motor such as short-turn stator winding, broken rotor bar, dynamic and static air-gap eccentricity, bearing trouble, and mechanical unbalance. The simulator is used as an initial builder to develop design algorithm for real-time faults detecting system by processing an abnormal signal and characteristics in each fault.
The diagnosis technique of stator winding faults based on Motor Current Signature Analysis(MCSA) was suggested. Park's vector pattern, the circle that is drawn by d-q transformed currents($i_d$, $i_q$), is widely used for stator winding faults detection. The current Distortion Ratio(DR), defined by the ratio of max axis and min axis of ellipse of Park's vector's pattern, was more simple and powerful method than the Park's vector pattern. In this study, a calculation method of distortion ratio of Park's vector pattern was suggested for auto diagnosis of stator winding short fault and usefulness of suggested calculation method of distortion ratio was verified through simulation using LabVIEW program.
In 2007, 9,128 fires are attributed to electrical equipments. These fires resulted in 29 deaths and 262 injuries. Arc-faults were one of the major causes of these fires. When an unintended arc-fault occurs, it generates intense heat that can easily ignite surrounding combustibles. Conventional circuit breakers only respond to overloads, short circuits, and leakage currents. Therefore, the breakers do not protect against arcing conditions. This paper presents results obtained in experiments on ignition behavior of wire by series arc fault currents and techniques developed to detect the arc-faults. The developed technique was tested after installation to make sure they are working properly and protecting the circuit. If the developed arc detecting technique is applied, the electrical fires caused by an arc-fault can be reduced.
Early detection and diagnosis of incipient induction machine faults increases machinery availability, reduces consequential damage, and improves operational efficiency. However, fault detection using analytical methods is not always possible because it requires perfect knowledge of a process model. This paper proposes a neural network based expert system for diagnosing problems with induction motors using vibration analysis. The short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is used to process the quasi-steady vibration signals, and the neural network is trained and tested using the vibration spectra. The efficiency of the developed neural network expert system is evaluated. The results show that a neural network expert system can be developed based on vibration measurements acquired on-line from the machine.

A high speed digital distance relaying algorithm based on a least square error method is proposed. To obtain stable phasor values very quickly, first, a lowpass filter which has very short transient period and no overshoot is presented. Secondly, the least square error method having the data window of 3 samples is used by applying a FIR filter which removes the DC-offset component in current relaying signals. Test results show that the proposed distance relaying algorithm detects most of internal faults within a half cycle after faults in a 154[kV] overhead transmission line system.
