  • Interconnection of new energy sources, such as photovoltaic generation, wind power generation, etc., into the electric power distribution system may result in the increasing short-circuit capacity when a short circuit fault occurs. The short-circuit capacity becomes over the interrupting ratings of circuit breakers, and then they fails to operate in the proper way they prevent fault currents from flowing into the distribution facilities and thus causing them serious damages. This study deals with impacts on the respective short-circuit capacity of both low voltage and extra high voltage distribution systems at which new energy sources are installed. In order to obtain more accurate and all-case values very close to reality in the complicated distribution system, computer simulation tools should be required. In this paper, however, its focus is placed on examining the varying trend of short-circuit capacity, which may happen owing to new energy source interconnection, as a previewing step for exhaustive simulation studies.

Study on Application of Superconducting Fault Current Limiter Considering Risk of Circuit Breaker Short-Circuit Capacity in a Loop Network System

  • This paper suggests an application method for a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using an evaluation index to estimate the risk regarding the short-circuit capacity of the circuit breaker (CB). Recently, power distribution systems have become more complex to ensure that supply continuously keeps pace with the growth of demand. However, the mesh or loop network power systems suffer from a problem in which the fault current exceeds the short-circuit capacity of the CBs when a fault occurs. Most case studies on the application of the SFCL have focused on its development and performance in limiting fault current. In this study, an analysis of the application method of an SFCL considering the risk of the CB's short-circuit capacitor was carried out in situations when a fault occurs in a loop network power system, where each line connected with the fault point carries a different current that is above or below the short-circuit capacitor of the CB. A loop network power system using PSCAD/EMTDC was modeled to investigate the risk ratio of the CB and the effect of the SFCL on the reduction of fault current through various case studies. Through the risk evaluations of the simulation results, the estimation of the risk ratio is adequate to apply the SFCL and demonstrate the fault current limiting effect.

IEC 60909에 의한 삼상 고장계산 (Three-phase Fault Calculation by IEC 60909)

  • This paper analyzes how to calculate the three phase short circuit current calculation procedures used in the IEC 60909 short circuit. It presented the new procedure of the fault current for the interrupting capacity of the circuit breaker. This procedure is applied to the future power system and calculates the fault current. Power demands are increased because of the growth of the economy for this reason, the fault current of the power system is largely increased and the fault current procedure for the proper interrupting capacity calculation of the existing or the new circuit breaker is essential. How to calculate the three phase short circuit current for ac electrical system and select the high voltage and low voltage circuit breaker based on IEC 60909 standards.

  • Switching of the transmission lines(T/L) is one of the ways for suppressing the short circuit capacity. This paper presents the extended optimal power flow(OPF) to the problem of selecting the T/Ls to be open. The constraints of the short circuit currents within limits are added to the inequalities of OPF. Also, the overload on the other lines due to switching of T/Ls is avoided by the linearized inequalities. The number of the open lines can be minimized by incorporating into the objective function of OPF in order to maintain reliability. The method of an effective calculation of the extended OPF is also proposed in this paper, which makes the two parts decoupled. The one concerning the generation dispatch is solved in the first place by the conventional method. Secondly, the other concerning the line-switching is optimized by the proposed formulation.

  • Recently, the use of large-capacity secondary batteries for electric vehicles is rapidly increasing, and accordingly, the demand for technologies and equipment for battery reliability evaluation is increasing significantly. The existing short circuit test equipment for evaluating the stability of the existing secondary battery consists of relays, MCs, and switches, so when a large current is energized during a short circuit, contact fusion failures occur frequently, resulting in high equipment maintenance and repair costs. There was a disadvantage that repeated testing was impossible. In this paper, we developed an electronic short circuit test device that realizes stable switching operation when a large-capacity power semiconductor switch is energized with a large current, and applied smart ICT technology to this electronic short circuit stability test system to achieve high speed and high precision through communication with the master. It is expected that the inspection history management system based on data measurement, database format and user interface will be utilized as essential inspection process equipment.

  • Testing capacity of KERI synthetic short-circuit testing facilities has been upgraded to fulfill the requirements up to 550kV 63kA, 1-break circuit breaker ratings. Specially the current capacity was increased 50kA to 63kA and the full type test of 362kV 63kA circuit breaker(1-break) was firstly completed in domestic. UP to now, domestic manufacturers have depended on the foreign testing laboratory for performance verification of newly designed products. This paper introduces the summary of the increased short-circuit testing facilities, the testing techniques and its results for the making and breaking performance of 362kV, 63kA circuit breaker which was Performed according to IEEE C37.06(1999) used in North America.

차단기의 차단합성성대기적에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Adapting for Interrupting Capacity Augmentation of Circuit Breaker)

  • This paper proposes the adapter for interrupting capacity augmentation of circuit breaker which can be applied in case of shortage in a existing circuit breaker's interrupting capacity due to utility system extension. The adapter utilizes two winding type of reactor instead of single winding type of reactor and the control of 2ry circuit is excuted by a triac interlocked with the system protective relays actuation so as to cut out the reactor by short circuit of the 2ry winding in normal situation and to cut in the reactor by open circuit of the 2ry winding in abnomal situation such as short circuit accident. As a result of the theoritical analysis and experiment, it is proved that the adaptor can reduce the voltage crop and iron loss due to the reactor signigicantly in normal system condition and do a role of reactor upon the power system accident.

  • Power distribution system requires the transformer with higher capacity than ever, but this ever, but this may be the cause of the increasing of short circuit current in contrast to conventional one when short-circuit accident is occurred. Therefore molded case circuit breaker improved in aspects of interrupting capacity of short circuit current in this system is needed. The arrangement and quality of the material of grids in arc quenching room are also designed optimally by the analysis of arc driving forces.

  • As the increasing of capacity and technology of power facilities, rotating machines such as turbine generators and water turbines are getting higher at capacity but smaller in size. Thus the monitoring and diagnosis of generators for fault detection and protection has attracted intensive interest. Most of electrical faults of rotating machines appear in their windings. In case of an after-fault in high capacity rotating machines, the recovering cost is usually very expensive and additional time is necessary for returning in a normal situation. In this paper, the magnetic flux patterns in air-gap of a generator under various fault states as well as a normal state are simulated by a conventional FEM tool. These results are successfully applied to detection and diagnosis of the short-circuit condition in rotor windings of a high capacity generator.

  • 최근 전력규모의 확대에 따라 안정된 전력의 공급을 위협하는 전력계통의 고장이 급속히 증가되고 있으며, 그중 단락전류의 계산에 대하여 지금까지는 대부분 수작업으로 계산을 하여왔다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 종전의 수작업에 의존하여 단락용량 계산서를 작성했던 방법을 Visual Basic을 접목시켜 프로그램화하여 사용함으로서 전기설비에 대한 차단 용량 값을 정확하게 산출하여 계통도 안정 및 부하설비에 대한 신뢰성을 확보할 수 있도록 하였다. 앞으로 이에 대한 연구는 전기설비관련 분야의 설계 및 시공분야에서 폭넓게 사용하게 될 것이다.
