  • To comparison the surface treatment methods of stone board materials, the results of Dorry's abrasive test were 23.4 for water-jet system and 18.9 for flame-burner system. Therefore abrasive hardness, the stone board materials by the water-jet system was greater than one by flame-jet system. As a result of Shore's hardness test, the stone board materials by water-jet system was twice greater than one by flame-jet system. Authors carried out microscopic observation to survey a defection of the composition minerals for two methods, but all of the both methods have not founded a defection. Therefore, the stone board materials by water-jet system was greater durability than one by flame-jet for the surface treatment methods.

  • The variation of chemical structure and physical properties of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) during thermal aging process was investigated. The formation of carbonyl functional group resulting from thermal oxidation reaction of XLPE was monitored using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. It was observed that the intensity of carbonyl peak observed at 1715 nm linearly increased with aging time in NIR spectroscopy. The linear relationship between NIR peak absorbance and aging time confirmed that NIR spectroscopy might be used as a proper tool for monitoring the aging process of polymeric materials. Also the formation of crosslinks during the aging process was monitored using thermal mechanical analysis, stress-strain test, and Shore hardness test. The change in the physical properties, such as the increase in the glass transition temperature from 110 to 132$^{\circ}C$, the decrease in the strain from 265 to 110%, as well as the increase in the shore D hardness from 32 to 50, was observed during the aging process.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical effect of tissue conditioner on polymerized acrylic resins. Surface hardness and transverse strength were measured for evaluating physical effect of tissue conditioner on polymerized acrylic resins. 1) To measured surface hardness, the resin specimens($65{\times}10{\times}10mm$ size) of each resin material were made, applied tissue conditioner, stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for 1 week, and changed tissue conditioner every week for 3 weeks. Surface hardness was measured every week with Shore hardness tester for 4 weeks. 2) To measured transverse strength, the resin specimens($65{\times}10{\times}3mm$ size & $65{\times}10{\times}1.5mm$) of each resin material were made. The specimens were divided into four groups, and measured by universial testing machine. Group I(control group) : The resin specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for 5 weeks. Group II : The resin specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for 5 weeks, and relined in 1.5mm thickness with same resin. Group III : The resin specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for 1 week, applied tissue conditioner in 1.5mm thickness, stored in $37^{\circ}C$ water for 1 week, changed tissue conditioner and water every week for 3 weeks, removed tissue conditioner, reduced 1.5mm thickness from resin surface which was applied tissue conditioner, and relined in 1.5mm thickness with same resin. The following conclusions were obtained : 1. Surface hardness changes of Vertex RS and Vertex SC were not different significantly(p>0.01). 2. Surface hardness of K-33, Tokuso rebase, and Kooliner were decreased(p<0.01). 3. With the exception of Kooliner, transverse strength of all resin materials between control group and groups which applied with tissue conditioner were not different significantly(p>0.01).

  • PURPOSE. This study was aimed to determine the effect of two chemically distinct denture cleansers and water on the surface hardness of acrylic and silicone based soft denture liners at various time intervals. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two commonly used commercial resilient liner material were selected based on their chemical composition (silicone- and acrylic-based soft liners) for this investigation. 120 cylindrical specimens were made of $15mm{\times}10mm$ dimensions (according to ASTM: D-2240-64T) in a custom made metal mold. All specimens were stored in artificial saliva throughout the study. Forty specimens were cleansed daily in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution; forty were cleansed in sodium perborate and remaining forty specimens were daily rinsed in water. Testing was done at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months for surface hardness using a Shore A Durometer. A mean of 3 reading for each sample was subjected to one-way ANOVA, Post Hoc test and pair-t test for statistical analysis. P values of less than 0.05 were taken as statistically significant. RESULTS. Surface hardness of all the samples was significantly higher after a period of 6 months irrespective of the cleansing treatment. Minor changes were observed between control, sodium hypochlorite and sodium perborate groups with time. Greater change was observed in surface hardness of acrylic-based soft denture liners as compared to silicone-based soft liners for all groups, as time progressed. CONCLUSION. Silicone-based soft denture liners performed significantly better in all cleansing treatments than acrylic-based soft denture liners.

  • In this study, bipolar plates in fuel cells are formed using rubber forming process. The effects of important parameters in rubber forming such as hardness and thickness of rubber pad, speed and pressure of punch that compress blank, and physical property of materials on the channel depth were analyzed. In the soft material sheet Al1050, deeper channels are formed than in materials STS304 and Ti-G5. Formed channel depth was increased when hardness of rubber pad was lower, thickness of rubber pad was high, and speed and pressure of punch were high. It was found the deepest channel was achieved when forming process condition was set with punch speed and pressure at 30 mm/s and 55 MPa, respectively using rubber pad having hardness Shore A 20 and thickness 60 mm. The channel depths of bipolar plates formed with Al1050, STS304 and Ti-G5 under the above process condition were 0.453, 0.307, and 0.270 mm, respectively. There were no defects such as wrinkle, distortion, and crack found from formed bipolar plates.

  • Work rolls used in cold rolling mills must have outstanding wear resistance and very little plastic defor- mation. Thus, these rolls require a higher surface hardness and harding to a greater depth. To meet these requirements, the rolls, in general, have basic chemical composition of 0.7 to 1.0% carbon and 1.0 to 5.0% Cr(chromium), plus a small amounts of special elements, and are subjected to intensive water quenching and tempering at low temperature to provide a surface hardness of over 90 shore. This test results are as follows. Deflection and fracture load of 5% Cr material are than those of 3% Cr material and show flat curve from surface to subsurface. It will be clear that 5% Cr work roll has a superior resisti- bility against wear and abrasion comparing with 3% Cr work roll. The improvement of wear and abrasion in 5% Cr work roll will be achieved by the large amount of wpheroidal carbide. In grindability and polish, 5% Cr work roll will be a little inferior comparing with 3% Cr work roll.

  • In this study, various laboratory experiments were conducted on tuff, basalt and diorite specimens, which were obtained in the southern part of Korean Peninsula. Experiments were performed under dry and water saturated conditions. Results showed that strength degradation and change of deformation characteristics were remarkable although the specimens had small porosity. Based on the results, regression models that are capable of predicting important mechanical rock properties, such as uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Brazilian tensile strength were proposed. P-wave velocity and Shore hardness were selected as independent variables and the results showed satisfactory prediction performance for the experimental data collected in this study.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the diverse characteristics of a novel commercial bolus, CLEANBOLUS-WHITE (CBW), to ascertain its suitability for clinical application. Methods: The evaluation of CBW encompassed both physical and biological assessments. Physical parameters such as mass density and shore hardness were measured alongside analyses of element composition. Biological evaluations included assessments for skin irritation and cytotoxicity. Dosimetric properties were examined by calculating surface dose and beam quality using a treatment planning system (TPS). Additionally, doses were measured at maximum and reference depths, and the results were compared with those obtained using a solid water phantom. The effect of air gap on dose measurement was also investigated by comparing measured doses on the RANDO phantom, under the bolus, with doses calculated from the TPS. Results: Biological evaluation confirmed that CBW is non-cytotoxic, nonirritant, and non-sensitizing. The bolus exhibited a mass density of 1.02 g/cm3 and 14 shore 00. Dosimetric evaluations revealed that using the 0.5 cm CBW resulted in less than a 1% difference compared to using the solid water phantom. Furthermore, beam quality calculations in the TPS indicated increased surface dose with the bolus. The air gap effect on dose measurement was deemed negligible, with a difference of approximately 1% between calculated and measured doses, aligning with measurement uncertainty. Conclusions: CBW demonstrates outstanding properties for clinical utilization. The dosimetric evaluation underscores a strong agreement between calculated and measured doses, validating its reliability in both planning and clinical settings.
