  • Submerged breakwaters are used to prevent shore line erosion and sediment transportation. One of their advantages is low visual impact. In this paper, the effects of discontinuous submerged breakwaters over water surface elevation was numerically studied considering the extended Boussinesq equations as governing equations using MIKE21 software. The result of discontinuous breakwater was compared with a beach without breakwater. The results showed that the gap dramatically effects on surface elevation from shore line to offshore. It is also evident from results that with approaching the center of the gap, fluctuation of surface elevation is generated. It is because of passing longshore currents towards offshore through the gap which leads to an increase in sediment transportation rate. Nevertheless, transferring water mass from breakwater gap results in powerful rip currents leading to high changes on longshore wave profile.

  • Inundation of substation and underground power equipment(pad-mounted transformers & switches) breaks out every summer season in low-lying downtown and low-lying shore by localized heavy rain, typhoon and tidal wave. In case inundation of substation and underground power equipment, it occurs a great economic loss owing to recovery time and events of electric shock occur by inundation electrical facility. So we search the damage situation and installation situations. Therefore we propose the necessity of protection of flood at low-lying downtown and low-tying shore. This paper will be used to present a reform proposal of electrical related law about flood protection of existing power equipment.

  • There are two types of chloride in concrete; one is added as concrete materials' chloride when concrete's mixing, and .the other is penetrated from the air and sea water in the sea-shore area. These chlorides penetrate into concrete, and they are accumulated inside the concrete with aging. This study aimed to evaluate the chloride ion penetration resistance of concrete containing GGBFS in the sea-shore area. Therefore, the specimens made with the replacement ratios(0, 0.30, 0.45, 0.60) of GGBFS were put into 3% NaCl solution according to the chloride accelerating test of JCI-SC3, and then investigated the weight changes, compressive strength, chloride ion with the depths of the specimens by aging. The result is that the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion is decreased with the increase of replacement ratios when compared to OPC

  • Recent long-span bridges, such as Kwang-Ahn Grand bridge, Seo-Hae Grand Bridge, Young-Jong Grand Bridge, etc, have been designed and constructed near the shore. Thus, it needs to analyze the durability of marine concrete structures which are exposed to severe chloride environments. It is well known that corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete is one of the major factors for the durability of concrete structures. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the performance of impressed current system and corrosion inhibitors for the corrosion protection of reinforced concrete structures. Concrete test specimens were made with various test parameters, such as cover depth, steel diameter, compressive strength, direction and frequency of notch. For the efficient evaluation of these corrosion protection systems, these tests have been carried out in the shore.

  • Multi-MW wind turbines have very large blades over 40~50 m in length. Some factors like wind shear and tower shadow make an effect on asymmetric loads on the blades. Larger asymmetric loads are produced as the length of blade is getting longer. In this paper, a 2 MW on-shore wind turbine is considered and variations of thrust on 3 blades and rotor hub under wind shear are calculated by using a commercial Bladed S/W and dynamic properties of the thrust variations are investigated. It is shown that the amplitude of the asymmetric thrust on each blade under wind shear is getting larger as the wind speed increases, the frequency of the thrust variation on each blade is same as the one of rotor speed, and the frequency of the thrust variation at rotor hub is 3 times as high as the one of rotor speed.

  • As the Busan harbor is getting susceptible to oil Pollution. the authors analyze the historical records of oil spill accidents and investigate the shoreline features. In addition. we evaluate the response capabilities and compute the required stockpiles of marine oil spill response with the worst case scenario in this area. As a result, it is shown that the recommendable oil spill response is to contain and mechanically recover all oils at sea surface in winter. while chemical dispersants can be used in summer with mechanical containment and recovery, and it is also found that off-shore booms of 3,000m and off-shore skimmers of 986MT/hour recovery rate should be stockpiled with 10,000∼60,000 liters of concentrate chemical dispersant and small amount of synthetic organic sorbents for possible use.

  • A Digital Wave Tank simulation technique, based on a finite-difference method and a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) algorithm, is applied in order to investigate the characteristics of nonlinear Tsunami propagations and their interactions with a 2D sloping beach, Ohkushiri Island, and to predict maximum wove run-up around the island. The Navier-Stokes (NS) and continuity equation are governed in the computational domain, and the boundary values are updated at each time step, by a finite-difference time-marching scheme in the frame of the rectangular coordinate system. The fully nonlinear, kinematic, free-surface condition is satisfied by the modified marker-density function technique. The near shore Tsunami is assumed to be a solitary wave, and is generated from the numerical wave-maker in the developed Digital Wave Tank. The simulation results are compared with the experiments and other numerical methods, based on the shallow-water wave theory.
