  • In this paper, a small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to studythe flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade by experiment. Theflow was visualized by means of a single pass Schlieren system. The supersoniccascade with 3-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested over a wide range ofpressure ratio. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascadeinteraction and shock boundary layer interactions were observed.

  • At the University of Queensland (UQ), research into the performance of high-speed (in excess of 7000km/hr) air-breathing engines in the form of supersonic combustion ramjets (or scramjets) has been made for almost 20 years. This has been possible because the T3 and T4 shock tunnels, located at the ANU and UQ, respectively can simulate these conditions. However, like all facilities, there are differences between the flow generated in these facilities and that, which occurs in flight. The correlation between the two has not been determined for these facilities, or indeed for any shock tunnel performing supersonic combustion experiments. The aim of the HyShot flight program is to obtain this correlation by undertaking a sounding rocket program based at Woomera in South Australia. The seminar will discuss new approach taken by the UQ researches in developing this cost effective flight program, as well as the triumphs and disappointments which have been encountered so far in completing this somewhat ambitious program.

  • Dynamic properties of materials by shock loads such as rock blasting and earthquake are recently attracted in the design of aboveground and underground structures. The advance of measuring devices enables to obtain the whole histories of stress and strain in rock specimen of which the failure is completed in several hundred microseconds. The SHPB has been a popular and promising technique to study the dynamic behavior of rock. And the dynamic compressive, tensile and other test with this experiment system are planned to be Suggested Methods of ISRM. This technical paper is to introduced one study article which focuses the design of 3S (special shaped striker) to produce the half-sine wave to eliminate the problems of the rectangular wave. This article is also describing the advantage of half-sine incident wave and size effect of rock dynamic strength.

  • Mixing and combustion experiments with a vent slot mixer were performed in Mach 2 supersonic wind tunnel. Helium and hydrogen gases each were used for the mixing and the combustion experiment with a plasma jet (PJ) torch. The vent slot mixer holds plenty of fuel in the downstream mixing region, even though the fuel is transversely injected. In case of the combustion, the injected fuel is ignited by the PJ torch, and then unburned mixture is burned by shock-induced combustion downstream. Thermal choking in the combustor leads to shock trains in the isolator, causing the unstable combustion.

  • The performance of ramjet engine is closely associated with a supersonic intake. In this study, experiments and computational simulations were conducted to observe the internal flow characteristics of the supersonic intake. The supersonic intake which have self-starting characteristics was designed and manufactured. The flow characteristics was analyzed from the experimental results using the supersonic wind tunnel testing and computational results using RANS equation and Menter's SST turbulence model. The detailed visualization results were suggested for the pseudo-shock wave of stable operations and for the inlet buzz phenomenon of unstable operations.

  • Through experimental investigations utilizing hypersonic shock tunnel-coaxial thermocouples as well as blow down hypersonic wind tunnel-temperature sensitive paints, the heat flux and the temperature over a protuberance were measured and analyzed. The experimental data were subsequently compared to heat flux data that was obtained by using blow down hypersonic wind tunnel and heat flux gauges. According to the comparison, both sets of data illustrated correlation with one another. The measured heat flux was large when the height of the protuberance was large. Experimental results show that heat flux measurements taken at higher locations were greater than those taken at lower locations. For high protuberances, a severe jump in the heat flux was observed, ranging in values within 0.6-0.7 of the height of the protuberances. However, when the protuberance was sufficiently short, a rise in the heat flux was rarely observed as the protuberance was totally submerged under the separation region.

  • Blasting, using shock and dynamic energy of explosive, is very effective tunnel excavation method. But it had serious problem which is the blast vibration and over-break. In recent study, pre-cracked excavation method using notch hole reduced blast vibration and over-break in tunnel, so we performed study about developing notch bit system for making notch hole. In order to make notch hole effectively we had perform drilling experiments changing length and height of notch and in order to improve speed and precision of drilling we had developed notch bit system which consists of drilling bit, notch bit, adapter and notch guide.
