Ablation occurs at irradiance beyond $10^9\;W/cm^2$ with nanosecond and short laser pulses focused onto any materials. Phenomenologically, the surface temperature is instantaneously heated past its vaporization temperature. Before the surface layer is able to vaporize, underlying material will reach its vaporization temperature. Temperature and pressure of the underlying material are raised beyond their critical values, causing the surface to explode. The pressure over the irradiated surface from the recoil of vaporized material can be as high as $10^5\;MPa$. The interaction of high power nanosecond laser with a thin metal in air has been investigated. The nanosecond pulse laser beam in atmosphere generates intensive explosions of the materials. The explosive ejection of materials make the surrounding gas compressed, which form a shock wave that travels at several thousand meters per second. To understand the laser ablation mechanism including the heating and ionization of the metal after lasing, the temporal evolution of shock waves is captured on an ICCD camera through laser flash shadowgraphy. The expansion of shock wave in atmosphere was found to agree with the Sedov's self-similar spherical blast wave solution.
A laser shock cleaning technology is a new dry cleaning methodology for the effective removal of small particles from the surface. This technique uses a plasma shock wave produced by a breakdown of air due to an intense laser pulse. In order to optimize the laser shock cleaning process, it needs to evaluate the cleaning performance quantitatively by using a monitoring technique. In this paper, an acoustic monitoring technique was attempted to investigate the laser shock cleaning process with an aim to optimize the cleaning process. A wide-band microphone with high sensitivity was utilized to detect acoustic signals during the cleaning process. It was found that the intensity of the shock wave was strongly dependent on the power density of laser beam and the gas species at the laser beam focus. As a power density was larger, the shock wave became stronger. It was also seen that the shock wave became stronger in the case of Ar gas compared with air and N$_2$ gas.
Investigated In this paper is the shock reflection from a blunt body, In particular, a circular cylinder of 20 mm diameter, for the weak shock impinging in the range 1<$M_s$ <2. Pressure and shock speed are measured for various shock strengths. Double-pulse holographic interferograms are taken to study the unsteady flow field at $M_s=1.34$. These experimental results are, in overall, well compared with the unstructured adaptive finite volume computation of the Euler equations performed in this study. Correlation of incident and reflected shocks and shock-shock locus obtained by experiment, computation, and theory are presented in parallel.
The present paper describes experimental and computational work to augment the magnitude of the impulsive wave. An experiment was performed using a simple shock tube with an open end and numerical calculations were carried out to solve the unsteady, axisymmetric, inviscid, compressible governing equations. The control strategy applied was to alter the exit geometry of a straight tube to a sudden enlargement tube and a flare tube. The effects of the configurations of the tube exit on the magnitude of the impulsive wave were investigated over the range of the weak shock Mach number from 1.01 to 1.10. The results obtained were compared to those of the straight tube tests. The numerical result predicted the magnitude of the experimented impulsive waves with a good accuracy. The present passive control technique enabled the magnitude of the impulsive wave to augment by about 23 percent, compared to that of the straight tube of no control.
A new novel Whipping Factor is proposed as a measure of the ship damage potential due to an underwater explosion bubble pulse. The factor was derived from the relationships among the charge weight, its depth and the fluid acceleration due to pulsating gas bubble. From the whipping response analyses for three uniform Timoshenko beams with similar characteristics of real naval surface ships, we have confirmed the maximum bending moment responses of beams due to whipping are almost same if the applied whipping factor is constant regardless of the charge weights and depths, which could validate the proposed whipping factor.
The Impingement of a weak shock wave discharged from the open end of a shock tube upon a flat plate was investigated using shock tube experiments and numerical simulations. Harten-Yee Total Variation Diminishing method was used to solve axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible flow governing equations. Computations predicted the experimented results with a good accuracy. The peak pressure on the flat plate was not strongly dependent of the shock wave Mach number in the present range of Mach Number from 1.05 to 1.20. The distance between the plate and shock tube was changed to investigate the effect on the peak pressure. From both the results of experiments and computations we obtained a good empirical equation to predict the peak pressure on the flat plate.
Continuous operation of test and measurement is a new operating technique in the petroleum exploitation, which combines perforation with test and measurement effectively. In order to measure the original pressure of stratum layer exactly and prevent testing instrument from being impaired or damaged, a suitable shock absorber is urgently necessary to research. Based on the attempt on the FEM analysis and experiment research, a new shock absorber is designed and discussed in this paper. 3D finite element model is established and simulated accurately by LS-DYNA, the effect and the dynamic character of the shock absorber impact by half sinusoidal pulse force under the main lobe frequency are discussed both on theoretics and experiment. It is shown that the new designed shock absorber system has good capability of shock absorption for the impact load.
This research demonstrates the transient response of a head disk assembly subjected to a half-sine shock pulse in the axial direction. In case of disk analysis, the numerical method presented by Barasch and Chen is used. Galerkin method is used with mode shape by numerical method. head-suspension system is modeled by the cantilever in order to get simulation results. Simulation results about total system of HDA are calculated by Runge-Kutta method.
