The Evaluation of Shock Absorption Performance of Magneto-Rheological Elastomer Through the Drop Impact Test (낙하 충격 실험을 통한 자기유변탄성체의 충격 흡수 성능 평가)

  • In this study, Shock Absorption performance of Magneto-rheological elastomer(MRE) is identified through the drop impact test. Magneto-rheological materials are divided into two groups by MR fluid in fluid state and MR elastomer in solid state like rubber. The stiffness characteristics of Magneto-rheological material can be changed as magnetic field is applied. The impact loads in MR elastomer were measured under weight of impactor. Experiment results are shown through the experiments to confirm the effect of shock absorption of MR elastomer. Thus, the MR elastomer can be applied to shock absorber used in area that shock occurs.

  • Prior to installation in a navy ship, shipboard equipment should be qualified by shock test requirements. The multi-function console mounted on the elastic platform of the ship should also withstand given shock loads. In this study, both real shock test methods, as well as numerical computer simulations using the finite element method were used to verify structural durability under shock load conditions. First, we used domestic test facilities to perform possible shock tests, including an impact hammer test, a drop table test and a shaker shock test. Full model tests satisfying the shock response spectrum level were performed. Thereafter, an analytical model of the complex console structure was built by the finite element method. Finally, numerical results were verified by modal test results of the real product and an FEA analysis was also performed with a full model transient response analysis.

Shock Attenuation Mechanism in Drop Landing According to the Backpack Weight Changes (드롭랜딩 시 backpack 중량 변화에 따른 충격 흡수 기전)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the shock attenuation mechanisms while varying the loads in a backpack during drop landing. Ten subjects (age: $22.8{\pm}3.6$, height: $173.5{\pm}4.3$, weight: $70.4{\pm}5.2$) performed drop landing under five varying loads (0, 5kg. 10kg. 20kg. 30kg). By employing two cameras (Sony VX2100) the following kinematic variables (phase time, joint rotational angle and velocity of ankle, knee and hip) were calculated by applying 2D motion analysis. Additional data, i.e. max vertical ground force (VGRF) and acceleration, was acquired by using two AMTI Force plates and a Noraxon Inline Accelerometer Sensor. Through analysing the power spectrum density (PSD), drop landing patterns were classified into four groups and each group was discovered to have a different shock attenuation mechanism. The first pattern that appeared at landing was that the right leg absorbed most of the shock attenuation. The second pattern to appear was that subject quickly transferred the load from the right leg to the left leg as quickly as possible. Thus, this illustrated that two shock attenuation mechanisms occurred during drop landing under varying load conditions.

  • Nowadays, mobile devices are very common equipments such as mobile phone, PDA, etc. These equipments need information storage devices. Optical storage devices have more advantages than other storage devices, but it is not free from shock situation like dropping by user's mistakes. A complete model of a Small Form Factor Optical(SFFO) disk drive subject to shock loads is developed to investigate the response of the pickup/disk interface. With this model, we can simulate the drop test and consider the matters of shock simulation using commercial software(Ansys/LS-Dyna).

  • In this study, stability designing electronics mounted on launch vehicle for shock load(low/high frequency band) could be derived. For the low-frequency shock loads, CCA(circuit card assembly) has secured the structural integrity over the best natural frequency techniques. For the high-frequency shock load, the structural integrity could be ensured with applying device such as the insulation pad. When the EAR is applied, insulation effect of part application is good more than whole application.

  • A numerical study of the unsteady flow in an over-expanded thrust optimized contour and compressed truncated perfect rocket nozzle is carried out in present paper. These rocket nozzles are subject to flow separation in transient phase at engine start-up and/or engine shut-down. The separation flow structures at different pressure ratios are observed. The start-up process exhibits two different shock structures such as FSS (Free Shock Separation) and RSS (Restricted Shock Separation). For a range of pressure ratios, hysteresis phenomenon occurs between these two separation patterns. A three-dimension compressible Navier-Stokes solver is used for the present study. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is selected. The computed nozzle wall pressures show a good agreement with the experimental measurements. Present results have shown that present code can be used for the analysis of the transient flows in nozzle.

  • Investigation of the lateral force fluctuations in an axisymmetric overexpanded compressed truncated perfect (CTP) nozzle for the shutdown transient is presented. These nozzles experience side-loads during start-up and shut-down operations, because of the flow separation at nozzle walls. Two types of flow separations such as free shock separation (FSS) and restricted shock separation (RSS) shock structure occur. A two-dimensional unsteady numerical simulation has been carried out over an axisymmetric CTP nozzle to simulate the lateral force fluctuations in nozzle during shutdown process. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. Governing equations are solved by coupled implicit scheme. Two equation k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model is selected. Unsteady pressure is measured at four locations along the nozzle wall. Present pressure variation compared well with the experimental data. During shutdown transient, separation pattern varies from FSS to RSS and finally returns to FSS. Several pressure peaks are observed during the RSS separation pattern. These pressure peaks generate lateral force or side loads in rocket nozzle.

  • High-speed flight vehicles (HSFVs) such as space launch vehicles and missiles undergo severe dynamic loads which are generated during the launch and in in-flight environments. A typical vehicle is composed of thin plate skin structures with high-performance electronic units sensitive to such vibratory loads. Such lightweight structures are then exposed to external dynamic loads which consist of random vibration, shock, and acoustic loads created under the operating environment. Three types of dynamic loads (acoustic loads, rocket motor self-induced excitation loads and aerodynamic fluctuating pressure loads) are considered as major components in this study. The estimation results are compared to the design specification (MIL-STD-810) to check the appropriateness. The objective of this paper is to study an estimation methodology which helps to establish design specification for the dynamic loads acting on both vehicle and electronic units at arbitrary locations inside the vehicle.

  • Earthquake resistant design should provide a description of the structural failure mechanism under earthquakes as well as satisfy the requirement of other designs, e.g. design strengths of each structural member should be equal or greater than the required strengths. The reason of such a requirement is the randomness of seimic loads different from other loads. In this study, a typical bridge is selected as an analysis bridge and the procedure is given to get the ductile failure mechanism through connection design. It is shown with the procedure that the earthquake resistant capacity can be ensured within structural member's strengths required by other designs, without cost raise by strength increase of structural members or by use of shock absorbing device e.g. shock transfer unit.

In-shoe Loads during Treadmill Running (트레드밀 달리기시 신발 내부의 부하에 관한 연구)

  • To enhance our understanding of the loads on the foot during treadmill running, we have used a pressure-sensitive insole system to determine pressure, rate of loading and impulse distributions on the plantar surface during treadmill running, both in minimally cushioned footwear and in cushioned shoes. This report includes pressure, rate of loading, impulse and contact time data from a study of ten subjects running on a treadmill at 4.0m/s. Among heel-toe runners, the highest peak pressures and highest rates of loading were observed under the centre of the heel and in the medial forefoot. The arch regions were only lightly loaded. Contact time was greater in the forefoot than in the heel. Two-thirds of the impulse recorded during the step was the result of forces applied through the forefoot, mostly in the region of the metatarsal heads. The distribution of loads in the shoe suggests that the load distributing properties of the cushioning system are most important in the centre of the heel, under the metatarsal heads and great toe. Shock attenuation is primarily required under the centre of the heel and to lesser extent under the metatarsal heads. Some energy dissipation may be desirable in the heel region because it causes shock to be absorbed with less force. All the 'propulsive' effort is applied through the forefoot. Therefore, this region should as resilient as possible.
