A Study on Vibration Reduction of an Industrial Chop Saw in Operation (산업용 고속절단기의 기동 시 충격완화에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, a cause of a shock of an industrial chop saw is identified by experimental method and the shock is reduced by structural modifications. For the shock identification, vibration signals are measured by an accelerometer when the chop saw operates. Through some experiments, it is found that the shock is occurred by a slip between a spindle and a wheelwasher of the chop saw. To reduce the shock, One method is to lower the mass moment of inertia of the wheelwasher and the angular rotating acceleration of it. Another method is to broaden a contact area between the wheelwasher and the spindle. After designing and analyzing the wheelwasher and the spindle mechanically, a prototype of them is built. With the manufactured prototype, the performances and design requirements of them are experimentally verified by the response measurements.

  • Recently, the biolistic process is emerging as an effective needle-free drug delivery technique to transfer adequate concentrations of pharmacologic agents to soft living tissues with minimum side effects. We have started developing an effective method for delivering drug coated particles using laser ablation. A thin metal foil with deposited micro-particles on one side is irradiated with laser beam on the opposite side so that a shock wave is generated. This shock wave travels through the foil and is reflected, which causes and instantaneous deformation of the foil. Due to such a sudden deformation, the micro-particles are ejected at a very high speed. Here we present the experimental results of direct and confined laser ablation, which correspond to the initial stage of the whole experiment.

A Study on the Acceleration and Deceleration Control of Free-Form Surfaces (자유곡면의 가감속 제어에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the acceleration and deceleration control of free-form surfaces. A rapid variation of acceleration (or Deceleration) drives the system into a machine shock, resulting in the inaccuracy of the path control of the NURBS curve. The pattern of acceleration control can be established using the curvature of the NURBS curve. The curvature can be easily calculated from the first and second derivative of the NURBS curve used in Taylor's expansion for NURBS interpolation. However, the derivatives are not used in the recursive method for NURBS interpolation. Hence, we attempted the difference-derivatives for calculating the NURBS curvature. Both, Taylor's expansion and the recursive method, are used jointly for controlling the acceleration in the same interpolation algorithm.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze the vibration absorption effect for the agricultural product transportation-trailer equipped with vibration absorbable connecting hitch, leaf spring suspension, and shock absorber simultaneously (HLS), comparing with the trailer equipped with vibration absorbable connecting hitch only(H), trailer equipped with connecting hitch and leaf spring suspension (HL), and existing trailer with no vibration absorption device (E). Methods: Vertical accelerations were measured at driver seat and front, middle, rear parts of trailer bottom with no load for 4 types of transportation-trailer, and analyzed using FFT analyzer. Results: The magnitude of average vibration accelerations occurred up to 20 Hz, at this low frequencies the severe damage for agricultural products could be represented, was lower (maximum 6 times) for HLS trailer compared with H trailer. And vibration absorption effect for HLS trailer was also higher up to 40-80 Hz and 80-100 Hz, but the difference was less. At driver seat, the vibration absorption effect was high severely for HL and HLS trailer, and the magnitude of vibration acceleration was showed less difference in comparing at trailer bottom. Conclusions: From the test results, it could be recommended that the agricultural products transportation trailer should be equipped with vibration absorption device of HLS.

Microinstabilities at Quasi-Perpendicular Shocks in the High-�� ICM

  • At quasi-perpendicular shocks in the high-�� (��=Pgas/Pmag~100) intracluster medium (ICM), various microinstabilities occur by the temperature anisotropies and/or drift motions of plasma. In the downstream, the Alfvén ion cyclotron instability (AIC) due to the ion temperature anisotropy (Ti⊥>Ti║) is triggered by shock-reflected ions, the whistler instability (WI) is driven by the electron temperature anisotropy (Te⊥>Te║) as a consequence of the shock compression of magnetic fields, and the mirror instability is generated due to the ion and/or electron temperature anisotropy. At the shock foot, the modified two stream instability (MTSI) is possibly excited by the cross-field drift between ions and electrons. In the upstream, electron firehose instability (EFI) is driven by the electron temperature anisotropy or the relative drift between incoming and reflected electrons. These microinstabilities play important roles in the particle acceleration in ICM shocks, so understanding of the microinstabilities and the resultant plasma waves is essential. In this study, based on a linear stability analysis, the basic properties of the microinstabilities in ICM shocks and the ion/electron scale fluctuations are described. We then discuss the implication of our work on the electron pre-acceleration in ICM shocks.

Pyroshock and Vibration Characteristics of PEEK Washer Shock Absorbers (PEEK 와셔를 적용한 충격저감장치의 파이로 충격 및 진동 특성)

  • Pyrotechnic shock or pyroshock is characterized as a transient vibration phenomena which shows large acceleration and high frequency range up to 10kHz during the operation of separation devices where explosives are used. During the flight of a launch vehicle, pyro-shock is mainly generated at several events such as satellite separation, fairing separation and stage separation. In this paper, characteristics of pyroshock are introduced briefly, and PEEK washer shock absorber is applied for the reduction of pyroshock in the high frequency range. With some electronic devices, reduction characteristic of pyroshock using washer type shock absorber are studied. Random vibration tests are also performed for the verification of vibrational characteristics.

Shape and Orifice Optimization of Airbag Systems for UAV Parachute Landing

  • An airbag is an important safety system and is well known as a safety system in cars during an accident. Airbag systems are also used as a shock absorber for UAVs to assist with rapid parachute landings. In this paper, the dynamics and gas dynamics of five airbag shapes, cylindrical, semi-cylindrical, cubic, and two truncated pyramids, were modelled and simulated under conditions of impact acceleration lower than $4m/s^2$ to avoid damage to the UAV. First, the responses of the present modelling were compared and validated against airbag test results under the same conditions. Second, for each airbag shape under the same conditions, the responses in terms of pressure, acceleration, and emerging velocity were investigated. Third, the performance of a pressure relief valve is compared with a fixed-area orifice implemented in the air bag. For each airbag shape under the same conditions, the optimum area of the fixed orifice was determined. By examining the response of pressure and acceleration of the airbag, the optimum shape of the airbag and the venting system is suggested.

Large Solar Eruptive Events

  • Major solar eruptive events, consisting of both a large flare and a near simultaneous fast coronal mass ejection (CME), are the most powerful explosions in the solar system, releasing $10^{32}-10^{33}$ ergs in ${\sim}10^{3-4}\;s$. They are also the most powerful and energetic particle accelerators, producing ions up to tens of GeV and electrons up to hundreds of MeV. For flares, the accelerated particles often contain up to ~50% of the total energy released, a remarkable efficiency that indicates the particle acceleration is intimately related to the energy release process. Similar transient energy release/particle acceleration processes appear to occur elsewhere in the universe, in stellar flares, magnetars, etc. Escaping solar energetic particles (SEPs) appear to be accelerated by the shock wave driven by the fast CME at altitudes of ~1 40 $R_s$, with an efficiency of ~10%, about what is required for supernova shock waves to produce galactic cosmic rays. Thus, large solar eruptive events are our most accessible laboratory for understanding the fundamental physics of transient energy release and particle acceleration in cosmic magnetized plasmas. They also produce the most extreme space weather - the escaping SEPs are a major radiation hazard for spacecraft and humans in space, the intense flare photon emissions disrupt GPS and communications on the Earth, while the fast CME restructures the interplanetary medium with severe effects on the magnetospheres and atmospheres of the Earth and other planets. Here I review present observations of large solar eruptive events, and future space and ground-based measurements needed to understand the fundamental processes involved.
