This paper considers a transporter scheduling problem under dynamic block transportation environment in shipbuilding. In dynamic situations, there exist the addition or cancellation of block transportation requirements, sudden breakdowns and maintenance of transporters. The transportation of the blocks in the shipyard has some distinct characteristics. Some blocks are available to be picked up at a specific time during the planning horizon while some other blocks need to be delivered before a specific time. These requirements cause two penalty times : 1) delay times incurred when a block is picked up after a required start time, and 2) tardy times incurred when a block shipment is completed after the required delivery time. The blocks are located at different areas in the shipyard and transported by transporters. The objective of this paper is to propose heuristic algorithms which minimize the weighted sum of empty transporter travel times, delay times, and tardy times. Four heuristic algorithms for transporter scheduling are proposed and their performance is evaluated.
Digital manufacturing could be very effective in shipbuilding in order to estimate the process time, to improve the operation efficiency, and to prevent bottleneck processes in advance. The subassembly process having done research consists of piece arrangement, tack welding, robot welding, manual welding and so on. The robot welding of them was the focus of the simulation. The analysis and modeling were carried out by using UML (Unified Modeling Language) as well as $IDEF\phi$ (Integration DEFinition). The characteristics of the process resources were analyzed using the shipyard data, and the layout of the subassembly line was designed with the resources. Using the constructed resource and process model, the productivity and efficiency of changed robot welding stage were investigated. It was simulated how much the variations in the resource performance have influence on improvement of productivity. One of the important outputs in this simulation was the cycle time during a certain period's work. The cycle time prediction was also undertaken for the different torch and the different piece arrangement. The proposed model was established three-dimensionally in a digital environment so that interferences among objects and space allocations for the resources could be easily investigated.
As Information Technology (IT) is developed constantly, big data is becoming important in various industries, including ship and offshore industry where a lot of data are being generated. However, it is difficult to apply big data to ship and offshore industry because there is no generalized platform for its application. Therefore, this study presents a big data platform based on the Hadoop for applications in ship and offshore industry. The Hadoop is one of the most popular big data technologies. The presented platform includes existing data of shipyard and is possible to manage and process the data. To check the applicability of the platform, it is applied to estimate the weight of offshore plant topsides. The result shows that the platform can be one of alternatives to use effectively big data in ship and offshore industry.
In shipbuilding, the scheduling system is susceptible to sudden changes and thus it turns to be difficult to predict the differences between schedule and production records in advance. A computer-based simulation is commonly utilized to overcome the discrepancies occurred in estimating workloads and resulting processing times. The main drawback of this simulation-based solution is its limited applicability because, in most cases, each shipyard requires specific and customized simulation environment. By standardizing the planning data of the midterm scheduling system, as proposed in this paper, the efficiency of the current simulation model can be enhanced. To present an alternative approach, this paper begins with the analysis of the complex planning data structure of several shipyards and then proceeds to construct a standard data structure based on the neutral format. An interface application is developed for the data transaction and simulation in on-line environment. As a result, a simulation-based production management of shipyards can be achieved by the efficient prediction of planning and scheduling.
To improve the naval ship acquisition process, systems engineering, modeling and simulation, etc. have been introduced, and there has been ongoing research on acquisition systems for effective support of it. However, due to characteristics of the naval ship acquisition process, development process mainly carried out at a shipyard such as basic design, detailed design, construction and test is difficult to integrate with the acquisition systems of IPT(Integrated Project Team). In addition, research aimed to improve this is rather lacking. In this paper, the naval ship product structure concept proposed in previous research was applied to the basic design system at shipyard, and basic research for expanding the coverage of naval ship acquisition systems to the basic design phase is performed. A data structure of modeling system appropriate to the basic design phase was proposed through research findings and the prototype system based on it was implemented.
In a shipyard, there exist various critical decision making components pertaining to various production hindrances. The most prominent one is best-fit spatial arrangement for the minimal spatial occupancy with better pick-ability for the erection of the ship in the dock. During the present research, a concept have been conceived to evade the gap between the identification oj inter-relationships among a set of blocks to be included on a pre-erection area, and a detailed graphical layout of their positions, is called an Optimal Block Relationship Diagram A research has been performed on generation of optimal (or near Optimal) that is, with minimal scrap area. An effort has been made in the generation of optimal (or near-optimal) Optimal Block Relationship Diagram with the Goldberg's Genetic Algorithms with a representation and a set of operators are 'trained' specifically for this application. The expected result to date predicts very good solutions to test problems involving innumerable different blocks to place. The suggested algorithm could accept input from an erection sequence generator program which assists the user in defining the nature and strength of the relationships among blocks, and could produce input suitable for use in a detailed layout stage.
In the shipyard, a lot of data is generated, stored, and managed during design, construction, and operation phases to build ships and offshore structures. However, it is difficult to handle such big data efficiently using existing data-handling technologies. As the big data technology is developed, the ship and offshore industries start to focus on the existing big data to find valuable information from it. In this paper, the material requirement estimation method of offshore structure piping materials using big data analysis is proposed. A big data platform for the data analysis in the shipyard is introduced and it is applied to the analysis of material requirement estimation to solve the problems in piping design by a designer. The regression model is developed from the big data of piping materials and verified using the existing data. This analysis can help a piping designer to estimate the exact amount of material requirement and schedule the purchase time.
In a shipyard, it is hard to predict block movement due to the uncertainty caused during the long period of shipbuilding operations. For this reason, block movement is rarely scheduled, while main operations such as assembly, outfitting and painting are scheduled properly. Nonetheless, the high operating costs of block movement compel task managers to attempt its management. To resolve this dilemma, this paper proposes a new block movement analysis framework consisting of the following operations: understanding the entire process, log clustering to obtain manageable processes, discovering the process model and detecting exceptional processes. The proposed framework applies fuzzy mining and trace clustering among the process mining technologies to find main process and define process models easily. We also propose additional methodologies including adjustment of the semantic expression level for process instances to obtain an interpretable process model, definition of each cluster's process model, detection of exceptional processes, and others. The effectiveness of the proposed framework was verified in a case study using real-world event logs generated from the Block Process Monitoring System (BPMS).
The purpose of this study is to design an effective atmospheric environment system through the design of the dust collection in the air shot room being operated in a domestic shipyard. The ventilation system in the current air shot room mostly uses a dust collecting filter to filter internal particles and releases them in the atmosphere. A conventional design was made too much. In order to prevent an error and draw an optimal design, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tried to be applied only to air shot room. In the advanced design technique, computer simulation was conducted to secure basic design data. In order to find the basic design of the ventilation system and the flow field in the air shot room at propeller mold workplace of a shipyard, the CFD was conducted. In the case of Model-1 as a conventional workplace, where air flows in the inlet due to the subatmospheric pressure generated by inhalation of an air blower and flows out to the outlet, a discharge flow rate was somewhat low, and there was the holdup zone in the room. In the case of Model-2 as an improved model, the ventilation system was improved in the Push-Pull type, and the holdup of the internal flow field was improved.
During the shipbuilding process, many blocks are moved between shipyard workshops by block carrying vehicles called a transporter. Because block logistics management is one of the essential factors in enhancing productivity, it is necessary to manage block information with the transporter that moves it. Currently, because a large amount of data per day are collected from sensors attached to blocks and transporters via IoT infrastructure installed in shipyards, automated methods are needed to analyze them. Therefore, in this study, we developed an algorithm that can automatically match the transporter and the working block based on the GPS sensor data. By comparing the distance between the transporter and the blocks calculated from the Haversine formula, the block is found which is moved by the transporter. In this process, since the time of the measured data of moving objects is different, the time standard for calculating the distance must be determined. The developed algorithm was verified using actual data provided by the shipyard, and the correct result was confirmed with the distance based on the moving time of the transporter.
