  • Due to the changes in market place, new business types(e.g. e-business) have been rapidly emerged and increased. However, those new business types have not much been emerged n shipping and port related industries, and adoption rate of e-business in this area is very low, compared to other industries. Thus, to promote e-business in this area. many policies have been studied. However, most of previous studies have not been based on industrial structure, and results of these studies have mostly been case by case. Further, there have been no research based on the related theories. As a result, despite many of research and project for shipping and port related e-business, prominent achievements in this area have never to be presented. For these reasons, it can be stated that, first of all, basic studies related to new business types in shipping and port are needed. For these reasons, it can be stated that, first of all, basic studies related to new business types in shipping and port are needed, and then, various policies based on results of those basic studies should be discussed. The aim of this study is to classify business types existed (or expected) in a port related industry, ship bunkering. • The changes caused by the 4th industrial revolution are accelerating the convergence of technologies due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. As a result, rapid changes are expected in various fields of society and industry. The shipping and logistics industry is also in urgent need of smartization due to changes in environment and technology. However, in the case of Korea, the smartization of shipping and logistics technology is insufficient compared to that of advanced countries. For smartization for complex business processing with many related entities, smooth communication and visual confirmation using the latest technologies are becoming important. Such visualization and communication will become more important in smart shipping and logistics This study intends to present an integrated communication tool between self-driving ships and container terminals for the realization of smart shipping and logistics. In particular, a study was conducted on the development of a digital twin-based communication tool that satisfies the requirements of ship berthing and loading/unloading operations in which various actors participate and process complex tasks.

  • This research seeks to improve the understanding of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its advantages in the shipping sector. Recently, an improved emphasis on CSR, which incorporates environmental and social concerns into economic considerations of firms, can be found in business management and marketing literature. This is mainly because of people's increased awareness in regards to the negative consequences of corporate activities such as increased environmental pollution and gaps between the rich and the poor. According to the previous literature, it has been revealed that responsible actions by companies can generate positive outcomes in terms of financial and time aspects, but more importantly, intangible equity of the company, including improved corporate reputation, image as well as brand. As the regulation is intensifying in regards to environmental and social responsibility in the shipping sector, shipping companies are trying to engage in CSR to gain competitive advantages. While the reputation and image of shipping companies play essential roles for developing sustainable maritime transport, few studies have been conducted for how the CSR of shipping companies influence the shipping companies' reputation and image relative to other industries. In this regard, this study aims to investigate the effect of the corporate social responsibility on corporate reputation and image of shipping companies on the basis of an exploratory study in the Republic of Korea. This research would be beneficial to both academics and practitioners for developing useful CSR strategies which could promote the public's recognition of the shipping sector.

  • As the trend of ship's automation has spreaded over from 1950's , it caused shipping industries to develop new concept of ship's officer to operate new type of ships with high technologies. As a result, French started the education of Dual Purpose Officer (DPO) from 1967 for mariners who has skills and knowledge in navigation and engineering area. these experiments were concerned mainly with an improved carrier structure for officers, efficiency in ship's operation and subsequent cost saving, and in these years, many advanced countries in shipping business have been interested in the DPO system and adopted it especially in the Northern Europe and Japan. In Jorea there were researches for DPO based on experience of those in foreign countries in the middle of 1980's and established it with revision of relevant domestic regulation in 1990. Korean shipping industry will meet first graduates from DPO program in the near future but it seems that there were not sufficient studies to prepare actual practice. In the paper it was tried to analyze korean DPO system in the structure of education and certification by comparing them with foreign one and found that curriculums of the two maritime universites in Korea are quite suitable under circumstances of domestic shiping industry but some amendments are needed in relevant regulations.

  • The purpose of this study is to look for the trends and rates of change of major passenger modes such as railway, subway, domestic shipping, domestic airline, international shipping and international airline. The data used were selected from the KOSIS, "Domestic Statistics, Statistics by Subject, Transportation and Logistics". The analysis period was 22 years from 1999 to 2020, and the annual rate of change from the previous year was calculated. In descriptive statistics, international shipping and international airlines showed relatively high volatility, whereas railway and subway showed low volatility. In the rise rate analysis, international air and international shipping dropped significantly from 539% and 368% in 2019 to 85% and 20% in 2020 due to Corona. International airline and international shipping fell significantly in 2020, but we expect them to rise again as the shock of Corona disappears in the future. Therefore, it seems that we need a project to prepare for this. International air and international shipping are expected to continue their upward trend as international trade picks up again and international travel regains its momentum.

  • Purpose - In the international shipping industry, arbitration is mainly chosen for resolving maritime disputes. This study investigates the "acceptability" of an international maritime arbitrator based on an existing theoretical model of arbitrator acceptability. Design/methodology - Using structural equation modeling techniques, this study examines a sample of senior managers who engage in the judicial affairs of their international shipping companies to verify a hypothesized model of arbitrator acceptability that covers cultural intelligence, arbitral experience, reputation, practical/legal expertise, and procedural justice as independent variables. Furthermore, the relative "perceived required time" of arbitration is tested as a moderator. Findings - Arbitrator acceptability is significantly influenced by six constructs of arbitrator characteristics: cultural intelligence, arbitral experience, reputation, practical and legal expertise, and procedural justice. Furthermore, the moderating effect of the perceived required time of arbitration is demonstrated in the relationship between arbitrator acceptability and arbitrator characteristics even though these relationships are not equally influenced. Originality/value - The originality of this study can be found in its context, that is, international maritime arbitration. Despite the potential growth of international maritime arbitration, existing studies have mainly focused on domestic arbitration. The findings of this study are expected to provide useful guidelines for nurturing international maritime arbitration in Korea.
