Typical activity-based travel analysis has been focused on passenger travel using household survey data. The current research focuses on freight transport using one-day travel survey data. Passenger travel can be seen as the outcome of traveller's subjective decision-making, whereas freight transport is the outcome of shipper or transport company's optimized scheduling. The research conducts an activity-based analysis of freight-vehicle trip chains. In particular, the research focuses on the difference in travel pattern between shipper-oriented private vehicle and transport company-oriented business vehicle. The research analyzed the travel diary of freight vehicles collected as part of the third national logistic survey in 2005. The diary is freight driver's one-day travel record including the information of loading capacity, item transported, destination, arrival time, etc. The analysis results show the difference between private and business vehicles in the travel pattern regarding the sequences of destination, destination type and item transported and the multi-dimensional information of the three sequences.

In the global competition environment, companies are using international logistics centers located in ports and airports to reduce costs and improve logistics services through the rationalization of logistics networks. By examining how the characteristics of shipper companies affect the utilization of the international logistics center, this study aims to suggest implications for the desirable operation and utilization of the international logistics center. As a result, the factors that utilize the international logistics center were extracted into three main factors of visibility, addition, and responsiveness. The case of addition was found to be the size of the firm and the type of product being handled. The company's characteristics in terms of responsiveness were found to be product type. In addition, the variable affecting the willingness to use the international logistics center was the period of use of the logistics center.

The allotment rate for railway transportation keeps an yearly 6% in Korea. However, the railway logistics will cause the opposite result according to the continuous investment and logistics rationalization. The study on railway logistics as well as inter-Korean railway that might highly contribute to the development of railway logistics is not enough at all. The purpose of this paper is to study the revitalization strategy for inter-Korean railway by forecasting the demand and the scale of railway logistics depot. The revitalization strategies for inter-Korean railway through railway logistics depot are as followings. First, it is necessary to strengthen the partnership with coal user in the logistics depot. Second, it is encouraged to provide the financial assistance that are needed in the maintenance of the decrepit North Korea's track as well as the establishment of Donghae northern line that is from Gangneung to Jejin. Third, the railway cost on long/short transportation and large sized shipper is needed to apply in a flexible way. Fourth, it is necessary to obtain the railway traffic right by involving the foreign mining development. Fifth, it is encouraged to constantly find the small sized shipper like cement company.

Purpose - This study aims to verify the direct causal relationship between cost competitiveness and global network competitiveness, which are the tangible service quality factors determined by the shipping company, which in turn affect the shipper's customer satisfaction. Additionally, we empirically investigate the intangible, related service qualities determined by shipping companies, such as operational competitiveness and customer relationship quality, and how these then positively affect customer satisfaction through the formation of trust. Therefore, we examine the mediating effect of trust formation among different contractors for shipping services. Design/methodology - In order to examine the shipping company's tangible and intangible service-qualities perceived by the shipper on customer satisfaction and the process of trust formation between contractors, we collected valid data from 114 respondents out of 200 distributed questionnaires. The respondents consisted of domestic freight forwarders who engage with domestic and international shipping and logistics agencies. Descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability, convergent and discriminant validities, common method bias, and PLS-SEM (partial least square-structural equation model) were analyzed using the program STATA 16. Findings - The findings of this study are as follows. First, our results showed that all hypotheses assumed in this study had statistically significant supporting evidence. Second, it was found that the mediating effect of trust was significant in affecting the quality of intangible service- qualities for customer satisfaction. Third, through supplementary analysis, we found that the global network competitiveness of domestic shipping companies will increase in importance in the future. In conclusion, the theoretical and practical implications of these findings are presented. Originality/value - This study reaffirmed the traditional causal relationship between customer satisfaction and tangible service quality. Additionally, we also contribute to the literature on the understanding of the causal relationship between trust formation and customer satisfaction through intangible interactions from a long-term perspective.

The IOPC Fund general assembly reported that the International Convention on Liability and Compensation for Damage in Connection with the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea (known as the HNS Convention) will meet the requirement for the convention to take ef ect between 2021 and 2022. When the convention comes into effect, the liability-limit insurance of the HNS transport ship will be enforced and the shipper receiving the HNS will pay the share of the contribution from the International Fund for damages exceeding the limit of the ship's liability insurance. Korea is one of the major shipping and shipper countries in the world; thus, this study aimed to the need to analyze the effect of the convention on the related industries. The survey of ships and contribution targets analyzed the research data of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The P&I premium estimation was reviewed by the Korea Shipping Association and the K P&I as insured ships. In addition, the contribution of the HNS cargo volume was analyzed in an annual report by a representative international association for each cargo. About 1,500 ocean-going and domestic vessels have been identified as ships subject to the convention. The effect of changes in premiums under the convention was minimal for most ships. The effect of the shipping industry is expected, with about 150 domestic tankers expected to increase insurance premiums. In the case of shipper industries, 52 freight terminals were found to be eligible for the payment of the share of the international fund, as the proportion of freight volume in Korea was ranked second to fourth in the world by individual HNS accounts. This implies the obligation to pay contributions according to the convention. Considering the status of HNS transport ships entering and leaving ports and the quantity of HNS cargo, it can be concluded that the validity of Korea's convention is sufficient and that, it is necessary to coordinate with global major shipper countries.

The main purpose of this study is to design the port marketing strategies for strengthening the competitive power of container terminal. So far many attempts have been made to analyze the international competitiveness of the terminal. Six factors hypothesized by this study come from previous research analyses about customers preference for port selection. Those are Cost Centrality and Intermediacy Free trade port Inland transportation connections Political and Economic institution and Port facilities. this study analyzes the most important factors about hob port and transhipment port separately through questionnaire analysis about users(shipper shipping company and freight forwarder) influencing on port selection. Climate changes and environmental pollution problems are continuing every year. In Korea, the carbon dioxide(CO2) emissions by the transport sector reached around 20% of pollution. Many countries are enforcing the pollution-control policy. Korean government has introduced the modal shift grants as well as in other countries. In case of nation's transportation plan, the policy basis of green distribution is emphasized. However, the shipper and logistics company have low interests in the modal shift as the massive transportation system. The purpose of this paper is that I studied the policy alternatives for the modal shift of foreign railways., And also I studied the difficult problems at altering the railway freight from domestic road freight and I suggested the alternatives of modal shift to solve those problems.

Information technology has been transforming the relationship between shippers and carriers, but an unresolved question remains: what is the relative importance to shippers of service versus cost benefits of e-logistics solutions? This research develops and empirically tests a model to determine how Internet-based logistical operations in international shipping impact on the relative importance of cost versus service benefits to shippers. Contrary to expectations, results show that shippers perceived cost benefits from well-designed web sites, undoubtedly a consequence of perceptions that multi-function portals with ease of access contributed to savings in time and money. Another result was the confirmation of the positive effects of cargo tracing and bill of lading issuance on service-related factors. Finally, this study draws attention to the need for improvements in on-line booking capabilities and development of a comprehensive common portal; issues that must be addressed for shipping lines to succeed in an increasingly competitive e-logistics market.

In this paper we deal with the logistics brokerage process in which a logistics agent intermediates between vehicle owners and shippers for matching empty vehicles and freights. Based on the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodology, the proposed agent system matches the most preferred empty vehicle to the shipper and the most preferred freight to the vehicle owner. In the proposed agent system, an MCDM based sensitivity analysis is also used for supporting decision makers under negotiations. Among various MCDM methodologies, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is utilized in this paper. Although AHP is one of the most popular MCDM methodologies, AHP needs a number of pair-wise comparisons for assessing alternatives and hence may give excessive decision making burden to the decision makers. In this paper, in order to reduce the decision making burden, a preference function based estimation method is proposed. We can expect that the MCDM based logistics brokerage agent can be used as an efficient and effective tool for e-logistics marketplaces on the internet.
