In the global manufacturing industry, digital transformation is emerging as an important issue for companies to improve productivity and strengthen industrial competitiveness. The government and shipbuilding companies drive research and development to attain advanced technologies through digital transformation for shipbuilding & offshore plants, one of Korea's representative manufacturing industries. Therefore, the digital transformation of the shipbuilding & offshore plant industry was defined using an input-output analysis model, and the economic interrelationships of industries linked to the digital transformation of the shipbuilding & offshore plant industry were analyzed. According to the analysis, the shipbuilding & offshore plant industry ranks second among all 34 industries regarding the forward linkage effect. The backward linkage effect was ranked 27th, making it a mid-demand industry with a robust forward linkage effect. In addition, the production-induced effect was 0.455, the value-added-induced effect was 0.174, and the employment-induced effect was 1.779 people per billion won. The contribution of this study is that it will provide the basis for establishing policies necessary to strengthen the competitiveness of the shipbuilding & offshore plant industry. Also, it will help analyze the economic effects of digital transformation in other manufacturing industries.
Korea is worldwide top manufacturer of offshore plant industry, while shown weakness in high-valued offshore plant service industry (OPSI). The governmental support policies and studies for fostering programs are centered on shipbuilding and engineering sector. On the other hand, offshore logistics service sector among the programs is neither included as governmental fostering support sectors nor ever-studied. Domestic shipping and logistics companies have many experience of handling various project, heavy-lift cargo and even super blocks on shipbuilding industry. However they are faced with lack of appropriate heavy carrier and others. So for their successful entering into offshore plant logistics market, systematic preparation, studies and supporting policies are highly recommended.

When a plant owner requests plant 3D CAD models in the format that a shipbuilding company does not use, the shipyard manually re-models plant 3D CAD models according to the owner's requirement. Therefore, it is important to develop a technology to compare the re-modeled plant 3D CAD models with original ones and to quantitatively evaluate similarity between two models. In the previous study, we developed a graphic user interface (GUI)-based comparison system where a user evaluates similarity between original and re-modeled plant 3D CAD models for piping design at the level of unit. However, an offshore plant consists of thousands of units and thus a system which compares several plant 3D CAD models at unit-level without human intervention is necessary. For this, we developed a new batch model comparison system which automatically evaluates similarity of several unit-level plant 3D CAD models using an extensible markup language (XML) file storing file location and name data about a set of plant 3D CAD models. This paper suggests system configuration of a batch-mode-based comparison system and discusses its core functions. For the verification of the developed system, comparison experiments for offshore plant 3D piping CAD models using the system were performed. From the experiments, we confirmed that similarities for several plant 3D CAD models at unit-level were evaluated without human intervention.

This study analyzed the offshore plant industry and related regulations such as ISO, IEC, and Norsok Standards to develop an integrated network management system (INMS) capable of both on-site and remote management and configuration of IP-based network equipment in offshore plants. The INMS was designed based on actual specifications and POS plans, and a plan of management was verified through an offshore plant engineering company. Various modules such as PAGA interface modules, CCTV, IP-PBX, and HF-radio communication modules were developed for system implementation. Protocol and data design and screen design were followed by framework development and introduction of the automatic satellite communication function.

This study analyzed the actual condition of the purchasing and selling network structures of manufacturing firms related the shipbuilding and offshore plant industry in Jeollanam-do using the social network analysis. The analysis results are as follows. The networks are often traded by subcontracting relationship with large firms because the industry is configured in most small and medium-sized firms. In particular, it was found to actual situation that selling transactions are being concentrated in the manufacturing firms of Yeongnam where large firms have located. Structural adjustment of the large firms located in the Yeongnam is expected to strike a blow to the manufacturing firms related the shipbuilding and offshore plant industry in Jeollanam-do due to the recently crisis in the shipbuilding industry. Therefore, it is necessary to secure a diversity of networks for selling transactions, and to discover and promote that selling firms related the shipbuilding and offshore plant industry in Jeollanam-do, in order to cope with such a crisis.

Offshore plants is an intensive industry where real value is able to be created when EPCIC(Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, Commissioning) is combined. Many universities and educational institutions have established major fields and graduate schools related in offshore construction and engineering as well as safety training and occupational courses. Most of the personnel who have graduated and passed those educational institutions have been working in domestic shipbuilding companies and marine equipment manufacturers. Therefore, customized education and training should be developed according to the educational demands required and then skilled personnel are needed to be supplied at proper times. This study, therefore, has found personnel demands inside and outside the country and occupational sections of offshore plants. Consequently, this study suggests making up a council comprised of shipbuilding companies, marine equipment manufacturers and educational institutions with government organization, and also researches the necessity of getting a job of personnel trained by the customized education. These results are expected to contribute to the development of education curriculum of domestic offshore plant as well as ODC(Offshore Development Center).
Lately old LNG carriers increased and ship price is getting down. So Interest for reuse and modification of used LNG carriers is growing. Also the needs for replacement of old power plant is increasing. Additionally eco friendly fuel such as LNG become attractive. Consequently gas power plant is getting much more popular than before. So in this research planning, we consider the floating power plant by modifying LNG carriers. This plant has the various function including storage, power plant and bunkering fuction etc. Through this multifunctional plant, we are ready for the old power plant shutdown and energy crisis in the future when we can supply the urgent mobile floating power plant quickly in time.

There are several existing studies for the weight estimation of offshore plants. However, most of them were applicable at the pre-FEED (Front End Engineering Design) stage. In this paper, a preliminary study on a method for the weight estimation and calculation of offshore EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) projects is made for the use at the estimation stage after FEED. Based on literature surveys including ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 19901-5 about weight estimation, we proposes new weight factors and a weight curve. Weight factors defined in this study include MTO (Material Take-Off), estimated weight, FEED maturity factor, allowance factor, and contingency factor. The proposed method utilizes bottom-up approach for weight estimation and it can be used for the weight estimation and calculation of offshore EPC projects at the estimation stage.

The shipbuilding and offshore industry is a large and complex assembly industry, which causes many safety accidents. The major accidents in the shipbuilding and offshore industry workplaces are stenosis, falling objects, dust, fire, explosions, and gas poisoning. The accident by worker in this industry mainly has three factors: frequent movement, narrow work space, and increased use of subcontractors. To control these factors, it is necessary to monitor the worker's location and work status. In this paper, a worker location monitoring system using inaudible sound wave was designd that can be used in environments with many metal barriers. The process included deriving stakeholder requirements, transforming to system requirements, designing system architecture, and developing prototype. The prototype was validated by third-party testing agency. As a result, it satisfied the designed performance and verified its feasibility.
The impact of the global financial crisis, which began in the United States in 2007, had a major impact on the domestic shipping and shipbuilding industries. In this regard, the domestic shipyard has established an order-taking strategy in several ways as an alternative to lowering the amount of construction of commercial vessels due to deterioration of the shipping industry, and selected industrial sector was the offshore plant sector. However, the domestic shipyard has under performed the offshore plant in order to just increase sales and secure work without any risk analysis for EPC contracts. As a result, the shipyard has been charged more than the initial contract price with the offshore plant contractor, or the shipyard has become a legal issue requiring payment of liquidated damages due to delays in delivery of the product. The main legal disputes are caused by the thorough risk analysis and the inexperience of process control that can occur during offshore plant construction. and In particular, there is no sufficient review of the unequivocal provisions in the contract as an element of risk management. There is no human resource to review these contractual clauses. Therefore, this study identifies the existence of specific risks that could lead to delays in offshore plant construction, and examined the existence of any unequivocal clauses in contracts for offshore plant construction. and also discussed how the toxic clause applies to the actual parties and how the concrete risk factors in the construction contracts are transferred and expressed by referring to the interviews with the project manager of the domestic shipyard and the previous research. As a result, This paper examined the legal liability of the contracting parties regarding delayed delivery of the products due to the offshore plant construction contract. And to improve the domestic shipbuilding industry.
