  • Various computing systems are used in naval ships. Since each system has a single purpose and its applications are tightly coupled with the physical machine, applications cannot share physical resources with each other. It is hard to utilize resources efficiently in conventional naval shipboard computing environment. In this paper, we present an integration architecture for virtualized naval shipboard computing systems based on open architecture. Our proposed architecture integrates individual computing resources into one single integrated hardware pool so that the OS and applications are encapsulated as a VM. We consider the issue of varying needs of all applications in a naval ship that have different purposes, priorities and requirements. We also present parallel VM migration algorithm that improves the process time of resource reallocation of given architecture. The evaluation results with the prototype system show that our algorithm performs better than conventional resource reallocation algorithm in process time.

  • There have been several problems in treating shipboard sewage due to special environmental conditions of ship, such as limited space, rolling and pitching, change of temperature and so on. It was suggested that Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) might be suitable process for overcome these problems in terms of small size, high capacity of treating wastewater and full automation. In this study a SBR process was employed for biological treatment of organic wastes in the shipboard sewage. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about 97% of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged 93%. A disturbance operation caused by the treatment of Methylene Blue Active Substances(MBAS) was not observed.

  • A hybrid mount for shipboard machinery installed on naval ships was developed. The mount is combined with a rubber mount and a piezostack actuator. The rubber mount is one of the most popular and effective passive mounts to have been applied to various vibration systems to date. The piezostack actuator is featured by a fast response time, small displacement and low power consumption. Through a series of experimental tests conducted in accordance with MIL-M-17185A(SHIPS), MIL-M-17508F(SH), and MIL-S-901D which are US military specifications related to the performance requirements of the mount, it has been confirmed that the hybrid mount shows more effective performance for use in naval ships.

  • Large areas must be rapidly screened to monitor radiation in marine environments. For this purpose, this study developed a mobile real-time gamma-ray measurement system for shipboard use and evaluated its performance. The system was developed to measure engine or generator cooling water by installing a canister inside the ship. The minimum detectable activity of the system is about 0.8 Bq/L for a 60 s measurement period, and real-time data transmission and remote control are possible. The system was tested in the field and is currently being installed and operated on ships in service. Such a ship-based real-time gamma-radiation measurement system is suitable for a wide range of marine radiation surveillance applications and is expected to be rapidly deployed.

  • The prompt and accurate location determination of the nodes of the wireless indoor shipboard networks is crucial to forming the stable wireless shipboard sensor networks. To this end in this paper it can be achieved through the measurement of the bi-directional channel qualities among the nodes after the locations of the sensor nodes temporarily placed. For the 1st stage the piconet-type sensor networks are considered to measure the channel qualities between a specific node and the cluster node which is the master node. After finishing the 1st stage measurement the nodes needing the relay nodes are selected and the measurement action goes into the 2nd stage. In the 2nd stage the measurement between a candidate relay node and the node needing a relay node starts to begin. After the 2nd stage the relay nodes to connect to the cluster node are fixed and the information delivery paths between a node and the cluster head are established. In this paper the measurement results in the realistic environment are gathered and analysed to show that the measurement procedure can be applied in the wireless indoor shipboard networks.

  • Recently, many researches are progressing to support the operation and maintenance works of vessels using analyzed result based on various information of equipment. The interfaces of communication equipment are standardized very well, but the interfaces of machinery and other parts are not standardized yet. For that reason, there has limitations for data exchange and management. To solve the problem, the ISO is establishing new standards which are ISO 19847 for shipboard data servers th share field data at sea and ISO 19848 for standard data for shipboard machinery and equipment. In this paper, we developed a data management platform for shipboard machinery equipment, and tested the field data exchanging using the developed platform based on the standards. To do this, we analyzed the requirements of the standards and related researches, and designed an architecture of shipboard data platform that satisfied the requirements. Also, we developed components of the designed platform architecture and verified the effectiveness for it.

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) is one of the most effective organizations in evolving international law for the protection and conservation of the marine environment. The IMO, MARPOL(Marine Pollution) 73/78 contains six Annexes that provide an overarching framework for the objectives of the international marine pollution. Annex IV was regulated by 64 th resolution in 2012 to control sea pollution from sewage. In 2014 large-scale wastewater treatment and nutrient removal device was developed with a grant from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. A combined new process of Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) and Membrane Bioreactor(MBR) was developed to overcome the pollution caused by shipboard sewage. In the present study, shipboard sewage wastewater was treated by mixing and aeration cycle in the newly developed SBR process. Furthermore, during analysis by NGS technique(Macrogen Co., Ltd.), dominant species of bacteria were found in the aeration tank of the Bench-scale wastewater treatment facility. Bacteroidetes and Gammaproteobacteria accounted for 27.1 % of the aerobicbacteria and 16.8 % of the anaerobicbacteria, respectively. Microorganisms play a vital role in shipboard wastewater treatment. A further detailed study is required to understand the precise role of the microorganisms in the wastewater treatment.

  • This paper presents the development of a tracking algorithm for shipborad satellite antenna systems which can enhance the tracking performance. In order to overcome some drawbacks of the conventional step tracking algorithm a new tracking algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm searches for the best tracking angles using gradient-based formulae and signal intensities measured according to a search pattern. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through simulation using real data.

  • This paper presents the stabilization of a shipboard satellite antenna system. Hardware systems composing the pedestal, pedestal control unit and antenna control unit are designed and stabilization control law is obtained. A model on each control axis is derived and its parameters are estimated using a genetic algorithm, and the optimal state controller is designed based on the estimated model. An experimental result demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed system.
