  • When maneuvering a ship in a narrow channel or under bridge, the ship operator may take actions of slowdown engine and altering course in order to avoid possible navigational dangers, which may reduce difficulties on navigation or collsion avoidance against other ship and/or bridge. In this paper, taking notice of the stress caused by these actions of slowdown engine and altering course, survey is carried out for whether it is possible to quantify the stress by time delay as an index. Based on the ship handling simulator experiment, it is verified that difficulty of navigation changes is highly correlated with the time delay, which result from compensation actions of slowdown engine and altering course.

  • The Korean government has introduced and enforced maritime traffic safety assessment to secure traffic safety since 2010. The maritime traffic safety assessment is needed by law to design a new port or modify an existing one. According to Korea Maritime Safety Act, in the assessment the propriety of marine traffic system consists of the safety of channel transit and berthing/unberthing maneuver, safety of mooring, and safety of marine traffic flow. The safety of channel transit and berthing/unberthing maneuver can be evaluated only by ship-handling simulation. The ship-handling simulation is carried out by sea pilots working with the port concerned. The vessel's proximity measure is an important factor to evaluate traffic safety. The proximity measure is composed of vessel's closest distance to channel boundary and probability of grounding/collision. What is more, the probability of grounding becomes important. According to central limit theorem, a sample has a normal distribution on condition that its size is more than 30. However, more than 30 simulation runs bring about the increase of assessment period and difficulty of employing sea pilots. Therefore this paper is to find out minimum sample size for evaluating vessel's proximity. First sample sets of size of 3, 5, 7, 9 etc. are selected randomly on the basis of normal distribution. And then KS test for goodness of fit and t-test for confidence interval are applied to each sample set. Finally this paper decides the minimum sample size. As a result this paper suggests the minimum sample size of 5, that is, the simulation of more than five times.

  • To design ship channel is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. In most case, the core factors for designing ship channel are the layout and width of channel provided the net underkeel clearance is secured to be safe enough to pass. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to design and assess ship channel. This model reflects ship's particular, ship domain theory, ship speed and mariner's ship handling skill and experience, especially external forces which cause leeway, set and drift and the change of ship maneuvering characteristics. A real time, full mission shiphandling simulator is used to analyze ship dynamic data according to mariner's ship control, external forces, ete. This model defines Domain degree and Domain-index for assessing the efficiency and safety of the channel. The proposed model is applied to Ulsan new port plan which has a channel width of 1.5 times the length of the largest vessel, a radius of 5 times the length of the largest vessel in a curve of 57 degree centerline angle and SBM facility adjacent to the lateral edge of channel. The result of this study shows that the width of the channel and radius of channel curve are suitable for the target ship but the difficulty of ship handling is caused by the large course change and SBM located in the vicinity of channel.

In most case, the core factors for designing ship channel are the layout and width of dvnnel provided the net underkeel clearance is assessed as safety. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to design and assess ship channel. This model reflects ship's principle dimension, ship domain theory, ship speed, conning officer's ship handling skill and experience and all external forces which cause leeway, set and drift and the change of ship maneuvering characteristics. Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator is used to analyze ship dynamic data according to conning officer's ship control, external forces, etc. This model uses Domain-index for assessing the efficiency and safety of the channel. • Marine traffic management could be defined as the implementation of managerial technical measures to improve vessel traffic safety. The managerial elements of vessel traffic management for ports and harbours or narrow channels include the total amount of traffic control, the vessel traffic separation scheme, speed restriction, traffic control by signals, the navigation information service and so forth. This research aims to quantify how much the traffic separation schemes(TSS) contribute to the alleviation effect of ship handling difficulty and to propose a design standard when the individual management measure is applied in an actual waterway. Traffic separation schemes have now been established in most of the major routes and congested waters of the world, and the number of collisions and groundings have often been dramatically reduced. In this part, the relationship between the alleviation of ship handling difficulty and the reduction of encounter figures among ships is quantitatively clarified by applying the ES model. As results of simulation analysis, it is recognized that a traffic separation system is most effective in the case of narrow width and heavy traffic volume. The centre buoy installation reduces about 1/4 of the alleviation of ship handling difficulty, TSS establishment 1/3, and design change to one-way traffic from two-way traffic reduces 1/2.

  • Recently, bridge design and/or construction works on marine traffic route are undertaking in Korean waters. Naturally the ship-handling difficulty and hazardous to navigation should be increased when the bridge is constructed on the shipping route. Unfortunately, however, it is impossible or not desirable to secure wide enough bridge span width due to geographical condition or economic point of view. Therefore this study aims to propose the consideration factors during the bridge design process, and the traffic volume control, speed limit and other alternative measures to secure traffic safety using marine traffic flow simulation technique.

  • In accordance with the development plans of Ulsan harbor, Ulsan new harbor will be contructed considering supporting Ulsan harbor as a safe berthing and departure at single buoy mooring(SBM). In this study, we used a full-mission ship handling simulator adopting 300,000 DWT VLCC manoeuvered at the planned Ulsan SBM. Five masters who have had a long experience of ship maneuvering were called to carry out the simulations, of which each scenario were tried one, completed total of 68 times. The marine traffic safety was assessed in terms of 1) the closest point of approach(CPA) to other SBM and breakwater in the vicinity and the probability of crossing the restricted area of the closest SBM and fairway limit, 2) subjective evaluation such as the mental burden and the maneuvering difficulty of shiphanders, and 3) the opinions of shiphandlers. From the result of this simulation, we have a conclusion as follows; First, because crude oil berthing angle is so small by current S-OiL Co. crude oil buoy by SK Co. No 3 crude oil buoy different view SK Co. No 3 crude oil buoy and interference of current KNOC crude oil buoy, Berthing is impossible, and Emergency departing is very dangerous too operation impossible. Second it is desirable that SK Co. No 2 and No 3 Single buoy Mooring that do different view controls position so that to be not put in straight line each other. Third, SK Co. No 1 and 2 single buoy mooring that do different view to Onsanhang berthing and departing is seized by single buoy mooring by external force ship that set sail does faith control need.

  • Recently, a new port reserves deep water depth for safe navigation and mooring, following the trend of larger ship building. Larger port facilities include long and huge breakwaters, and mainly adopt vertical type considering low construction cost. A vertical breakwater creates stem waves combining inclined incident waves and reflected waves, and this causes maneuvering difficulty to the passing vessels, and erosion of shoreline with additional damages to berthing facilities. Thus, in this study, the researchers have investigated the response of stem waves at the vertical breakwater near the entrance channel and applied numerical models, which are commonly used for the analysis of wave response at the harbor design. The basic equation composing models here adopted both the linear parabolic approximation adding the nonlinear dispersion relationship and nonlinear parabolic approximation adding a linear dispersion relationship. To analyze the applicability of both models, the research compared the numerical results with the existing hydraulic model results. The gap of serial breakwaters and aligned angles caused more complicated stem wave generation and secondary stem wave was found through the breakwater gap. Those analyzed results should be applied to ship handling simulation studies at the approaching channels, along with the mooring test.

  • In the initial ship design stage of shipyards, the hull form design, the basic design (compartment modeling and ship calculation), and the hull structural design are being performed by different systems. Thus, the problem on interfaces between these systems occurs. To solve this, we developed the hull form design system 'EzHULL' and the compartment modeling and ship calculation system 'EzCOM-PART' for developing finally an integrated ship design system. And, in this study, we present an object-oriented hull structural design .system 'EzSTRUCT', which is developed recently. A structural design in an initial design stage can be frequently changed, because the design is not firmly determined yet. Therefore, designers perform the simplified structural modeling with bigger structural parts (or objects) such as deck, longitudinal bulkhead, etc. in the initial design stage, and the detailed structural modeling with smaller structural parts such as plate, seam, slot, etc. in the detailed design stage. However, the existing hull structural CAD system used in a shipyard is not efficient in generating a 3D CAD model in the initial design stage, because it has difficulty in handling frequent changes in design. Therefore, designers initially draw 2D drawings in the initial design stage, and generate the 3D CAD model from these 2D drawings in the detailed design and production design stages. In this study, the hull structural design system, which can efficiently generate a 3D CAD model through rapid modeling at an initial design stage, was developed in this study To evaluate the applicability of the developed system, we applied it to hull structural modeling of various ships such as a VLCC, a bulk carrier, etc. As a result, it could efficiently generate a 3D CAD model of a hull structure.
