Accurate estimation of shear flows in thin-walled beam section is the key issue to evaluate shear stress distribution of ship hull transverse section under the shear forces acting on hull girder. It is regarded that the method using the warping functions obtained by finite element formulation is the state of the art of this field. Recently, however, IACS took effect the new version of CSR in which direct calculation process of shear flow was suggested. In the direct calculation process, shear flow of ship hull section can be obtained by the addition of determinate and indeterminate shear flows calculated respectively. So, in this paper, the shear flow evaluation codes based on the process proposed by IACS CSR and warping function based method were developed respectively. The calculated results of shear flows for the several examples of ship sections were compared with each other and considered in detail.

The icebreaking research vessel ARAON performed ice field tests during her 2016 Arctic voyage. The ship is subjected to ice loads through ice-ship interaction processes. Local ice load acting on ARAON's bow section was measured by using stain gauges installed on the inner hull plates and transverse frames of bow section. In this paper the local ice loads at transverse frames estimated from shear strain data were compared to ice loads from hull plate pressures by using the influence coefficient method. In addition to the analysis of local ice loads, the characteristics of peak ice loads with the ship speed is also discussed. It is recommended that the local ice loads estimated by calculating shear forces acting on transverse frames may be useful in estimating local ice loads on the hull of ship.
The calculation method which takes into account the shear lag effects on the ultimate transverse bending moment of a SWATH(Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) ship has been developed. In case of the ultimate bending strength analysis of conventional monohull ships and general box girder structures, the hypothesis that plane section remains plane after bending can be employed but not in the case of the structures having wide flange. For the ultimate bending strength analysis of such structures, a new method which can take into account the effect of shear lag on the ultimate bending strength has been developed by adopting more reasonable assumption that warping distortion of the section takes place inthe same way as the actual stress distribution. Finally, the proposed method has been applied to a a SWATH cross deck structure.

The purpose of the present research is to develop an efficient numerical method for the calculation of potential flow and predict the wave-making resistance for the application to ship design of tuna purse seiner. The paper deals with the numerical calculation of potential flow around the series 60 with forward velocity by the new slender ship theory. This new slender ship theory is based on the asymptotic expression of the Kelvin-source, distributed over the small matrix at each transverse section so as to satisfy the approximate hull boundary condition due to the assumption of slender body. Some numerical results for series 60, C sub(b) =0.6, hull are presented in this paper. The wave pattern and wave resistance are computed at two Froude numbers, 0.267 and 0.304. These results are better than those of Michell's thin ship theory in comparison with measured results. However, it costs much time to compute not only wave resistance but also wave pattern over some range of Froude numbers. More improvements are strongly desired in the numerical procedure.

The purpose of present research is to develop and efficient numerical method for the calculation of potential flow and predict the wave-making resistance for the application to ship design of tuna purse seiner. Havelock was considered the wave resistance of a post extending vertically downwards through the water from the surface, its section by a horizontal plane being the same at all depths and having its breadth small compared with its length. This enables us to elucidate certain points of interest in ship resistance. However, the ship has not infinite draft. So, the problem which is investigated ind detail in this paper is the wave resistance of a mathematical quadratic model in a uniform stream. The numerical results using the panel shift method and finite difference method are compared with the experimental results for wigley mono hull. There are no differences in the wave resistance. However, it costs much time to compute not only wave resistance but also wave pattern over some range of Froude numbers. More improvements are strongly desired in the numerical procedure.

Hull form can be described numerically by two approaches, one is to describe a hull form with a set of curves("curve approach"), and the other is to describe it with surfaces directly("surface approach"). This paper describes the numerical definition scheme of hull form using curve approach method which defines the hull form by a set of curves consisting of 2-dimensional transverse section curves and 3-dimensional longitudinal curves. A set of curves in the hull form definition scheme is described by the modified cubic spline which modified the general parametric cubic spline in order to ensure a very smooth curvature distribution within the curve segment even though a curve segment has large tangent angle at its end points. Illustrative examples are given showing the application of the method to represent the hull form of SWATH ship and oceanographic research vessel. Also, examples for hull form transformation are shown by using this method connected with transformation technique.
The objective of the paper is to study the impact of changing the traditional hull design of bulk carriers by providing them with a double hull while keeping the same deadweight. It is demonstrated that by introducing the double hull the structural reliability is increased throughout the entire life and also the extend of the needed repair is reduced. The results are obtained with recently developed mathematical tools for the reliability assessment of ship hulls subjected to the existence of multiple cracks both in the stiffeners and in the plating and it models the crack growth process. The effect of corrosion is represented as time dependent. The long-term stress range acting on the elements is defined as a function of the local transverse pressure of the internal cargo and outside sea water combined with the stresses resulting from the longitudinal bending of the hull, which is a combined with the stresses resulting from the longitudinal bending of the hull, which is a combineation of horizontal and vertical bending moments. The effect of maintenance actions is modelled as a stochastic process. The results show that a different design of the midship section improves the structural safety and also the economy with respect to structural repair of bulk carriers.

Using the computer programs for calculation of natural vibrations of ship's hull developed by the authors et al., an investigation into influences of various parameters on the accuracy of calculation was done through example calculations of a 30,000 DWT petroleum products carrier M/S Sweet Brier built by Korea Shipbuilding and Engineering Corporation. The methodical principles employed for the computer program development are as follows; (a) the ship system is reduced to an equivalent discrete elements system conforming to Myklestad-Prohl model, (b) the problem formulation is of transfer matrix method, and (c) to obtain solutions an extended $G\ddot{u}mbel's$ initial value method is introduced. The scope of the investigation is influences of number of discrete elements, choice of significant system parameters such as rotary inertia, bending stiffness and shear stiffness, and simplification of distributions of added mass and stiffness as trapezoidal ones referred to those of midship section on the calculation accuracy. From the investigation the followings are found out; (1) To obtain good results for the modes up to the seven-noded thirty or more divisions of the hull is desirable. For fundamental mode fifteen divisions may give fairly good results. (2) The influence of rotary inertia is negligibly small at least for the modes up to the 5- or 6- noded. (3) In the case of assuming either bending modes or shear modes the calculation results in considerably higher frequencies as compared with those based on Timoshenko beam theory. However, the calculation base on the slender beam theory surprisingly gives frequencies within 10% error for fundamental modes. (4) It is proved that to simplify distributions of added mass and stiffness as trapezoidal ones referred to those of midship section is a promising approach for the prediction of natural frequencies at preliminary design stage; provided good accumulation of data from similar type ships, we may expect to obtain natural frequencies within 5% error.

In this study, an optimization method to design the hull structure of the surface effect ships with twin hulls is proposed for the purpose of minimization of weight based on the regulations of DnV class, and computer programs following the method are developed. The method uses simple formulas as to bending and buckling strength of beams and plates to design local structures, and considers the effect of interaction between longitudinal girders and transverse web frames by grillage analysis and calculates torsional strength of the cross structure by the simplified method. Global optimization of the midship section is attained by integration of optimized substructures. According to optimized results by applying the method to the designed ship, reduction of 20 percent of hull weight can be shown, and optimum transverse frame space can be obtained.
In this paper, wake equalizing duct (WED) form optimization was carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. A WED is a ring-shaped flow vane with a foil-type cross-section fitted to a hull in front of the upper propeller area. The main advantage of a WED is the power savings resulting from the uniformity of the velocity distribution on the propeller plane, a reduction in the flow separation at the aft-body, and lift generation with a forward force component on the foil section. This paper intends to evaluate these functions and find an optimized WED form for minimizing the viscous resistance and equalizing the wake distribution. In the optimization process, the study uses four WED parameters: the angle of the section, longitudinal location, and angles of the axes for the half rings against the longitudinal and transverse planes of the ship. KRISO 300K VLCC2 (KVLCC2) is chosen as an example ship to demonstrate the WED optimization. The optimization procedure uses genetic algorithms (GAs), a gradient-based optimizer for the refinement of the solution, and Non-dominated Sorting GA-II(NSGA-II) for Multiobjective Optimization. The results show that the optimized WED can reduce the viscous resistance at the expense of the uniformity of the wake distribution.
