One of the most important things for quality to meet ship-production schedule is an accuracy control. A ship is assembled by welding through whole production process, so it is important that loss by correction will not happen as much as possible by using some engineering skills like reverse design, reverse setting and margin for thermal shrinkage. These efforts are a quite effective in fabrication stages, but not in erection stages. If a ship block which consists of common steel is exposed to directional solar radiation, its dimensional accuracy will change high as time by its thermal expansion coefficient. Therefore, the measuring work would be often done at dawn or evening even with having a very accurate device. In this study, an FE analysis method is developed to solve this problem. It can change measured data affected by solar thermal distortion to ones not, even though ship-block is measured at an arbitrary time. It will use the time when measuring, the direction of block and the weather record by satellites. It is confirmed by a comparison between measured data of a ship-block and the result by suggested analysis method. Furthermore, a pre-processing system is also developed for fast application of the suggested analysis method.

This paper shows the study of preswirl duct as an effective energy saving devices that have been devised and reviewed to support the propeller performance, especially for the ship of VLCC with large block coefficients. From the bare hull wake measurements, typical upper/lower asymmetry of hull wake at the propeller disk was found. The 2 kinds of pre-swirl duct, Unconventional half circular duct and Conventional circular pre-swirl duct have been designed and reviewed to recover the loss of propeller running in that condition. The general function of the pre-swirl duct was set to work against this asymmetry of wake and generate pre-swirled flow into the propeller against the propeller rotating direction. The optimum self propulsion tests with various angle configurations were carried out and the best configuration was decided. Accordingly, cavitation test was carried out with best configuration of unconventional half circular duct. The blade surface and tip vortex cavitation behaved smoother when the duct was mounted. The hull pressure amplitudes reflected this difference, so the hull pressure amplitude with duct was smaller than that of without duct.
A series of towing tank tests were carried out for 18 full ship models of high block coefficients. The resistance coefficients and wake distribution at the propeller plane were measured and carefully examined. Regression analysis was employed to find out the relationships with the hull form parameters. Equations for wave resistance coefficient, form factor, and nominal wake are given. A harmonic analysis of measured wake was performed to look into the influence of the local stern shape on the magnitude of fluctuating wake components at three different radii. The amplitude of wake harmonics was also expressed by regression quations. It was found that the regression formulas were very useful in estimating resistance and circumferential wake characteristics of full ship models. It was also considered that the formulas presented in this paper could be utilized in the hull form improvement in a preliminary design.
In this paper, we introduce a new method for assembly of shipbuilding blocks at sea and present its feasibility focusing on structural safety. The core concept of this method is to assemble ship building blocks by use of bolting, gluing and welding techniques at sea without dock facilities. Due to its independence of dock facilities, shipyard construction capability could be increased considerably by the proposed method. To show the structural safety of this method, a bulk carrier and an oil tanker were employed, and we investigated the structural behavior of those ships to which the new block assembly method was applied. The ship hull models attached with connective parts are analyzed in detail through finite element analyses, and the cargo capacity of the bulk carrier is briefly discussed as well. The results of these studies show the potential for applying this new block assembly method to practical shipbuilding.
The thermal elasto-plastic analysis for the prediction of welding distortion of a 3 dimensional large-scaled ship structure is a very time-consuming work since the analysis is a nonlinear problem, and a lot of finite elements are needed to simulate the large ship hull block. Generally, 3-D finite elements have been used in the 3-D welding distortion problem to assess precisely the temperature gradient through the thickness direction of the welding plate. As a result of the adoption of 3-D element, degrees of freedom are rapidly increased in the problem to be solved. In this study, to improve the time efficiency of welding thermal elasto-plastic analysis, a layered shell element was proposed to simulate 3-D temperature gradient, and the results were compared with the experiment. The experiments were carried out for the type of bead-on-plate welding, and we found the measured data have a good agreement with the FEA results.

The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at MOERI is applied to the numerical self-propulsion test. WAVIS uses the cell-centered finite volume method for discretization of the governing equations. The realizable $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model with a wall function is employed for the turbulence closure. The free surface is captured with the two-phase level set method and body forces are used to model the effects of a propeller without resolving the detail blade flow. The propeller forces are obtained using an unsteady lifting surface method based on potential flow theory. The numerical procedure followed the self-propulsion model experiment based on the 1978 ITTC performance prediction method. The self-propulsion point is obtained iteratively through balancing the propeller thrust, the ship hull resistance and towing force that is correction for Reynolds number difference between the model and full scale. The unsteady lifting surface code is also iterated until the propeller induced velocity is converged in order to obtain the propeller force. The self-propulsion characteristics such as thrust deduction, wake fraction, propeller efficiency, and hull efficiency are compared with the experimental data of the practical container ship. The present paper shows that hybrid RANS and potential flow based numerical method is promising to predict the self-propulsion parameters of practical ships as a useful tool for the hull form and propeller design.

The management of a panel block shop in a shipyard is a complex process that entails the largest amount of work and in which many decisions are involved. Shipbuilders have considered the process as a bottleneck since every panel for every ship and offshore hull structure must be processed through the shop. In order to maximize process productivity, simulation-based ship production execution system(SPEXS) is proposed for panel block operations utilising discrete-event simulation and simulated annealing. An application of panel block assembly shop, called SPEX-Panel supports production planners by general dispatching rules and metaheuristics to make better scheduling decisions on the shop floor. In addition, the system will help increase productivity in the yard with continuous improvement.

The prediction of ship resistance performance is typically obtained by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations or model tests in towing tank. However, these methods are both costly and time-consuming, so hull-form designers use statistical methods for a quick feed-back during the early design stage. It is well known that results from statistical methods are often less accurate compared to those from CFD simulations or model tests. To overcome this problem, this study suggests a new approach using a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) with voxelized hull-form data. By converting the original Computer Aided Design (CAD) data into three dimensional voxels, the CNN is able to abstract the hull-form data, focusing only on important features. For the verification, suggested method in this study was compared to a parametric method that uses hull parameters such as length overall and block coefficient as inputs. The results showed that the use of voxelized data significantly improves resistance performance prediction accuracy, compared to the parametric approach.

The ice resistance series charts for icebreaking ships were developed through a series of systematic model tests in the ice tank of the Korean Research Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). Spencer's (1992) component-based scaling system for ship-ice model tests was applied to extend the model ship correlations. Beam to draft ratio (B/T), length to beam ratio (L/B), block coefficient ($C_B$) and stem angle (${\alpha}$) were selected as geometric parameters for hull form development. The basic hull form (S1) of twin pod type with B/T of 3.0, L/B of 6.0, $C_B$ of 0.75 and stem angle of $25^{\circ}$ was generated with a modern hull design concept. A total of 13 hulls were designed varying the geometric parameters; B/T of 2.5 and 3.5, L/B of 5.0 and 7.0, $C_B$ from 0.65 to 0.85 in intervals of 0.05, and 5 stem angles from $15^{\circ}$ to $35^{\circ}$. Ice resistance tests were first carried out with the basic hull form in level ice with suitable speed. Four more tests for $C_B$ variations from 0.65 to 0.85 were conducted and two more for beam to draft and length to beam ratios were also performed to study the effect of the geometric parameters on ice resistance. Ice resistance tests were summarized using the volumetric coefficient, $C_V$ ($={\nabla}/L^3$), instead of L/B and $C_B$ variations. Additional model tests were also carried out to account for the effect of the stem angle, ice thickness and ice strength on ice resistance. In order to develop the ice resistance series charts with a minimum number of experiments, the trends of the ice resistance obtained from the experiments were assumed to be similar for other model ship with different geometric parameters. A total of 18 sheets composed of combinations of three different beam to draft ratios and six block coefficients were developed as a parameter of $C_V$ in the low speed regions. Three correction charts were also developed for stem angles, ice thickness and ice strength respectively. The charts were applied to estimate ice resistance for existing icebreaking ships including ARAON, and the results were satisfactory with reasonable accuracy.
The large-eddy simulation(LES) technique, based an a message passing interface method(MPI), was applied to investigate the turbulent flaw phenomena around a ship. The Smagorinski model was used in the present LES simulation to simulate the turbulent flaw around a ship. The SPMD(sidsngle program multiple data) technique was used for parallelization of the program using MPI. All computations were performed an a 24-node PC cluster parallel machine, composed of 2.6 GHz CPU, which had been installed in the Advanced Ship Engineering Research Center(ASERC). Numerical simulations were performed for the Wigley hull, and the Series 60 hull(CB=0.6) using 1/4-, 1/2-, 1- and 2-million grid systems and the computational results had been compared to the experimental ones.
