As demands for the maritime communications increase, a variety of functions and information are required to exchange via elements of maritime systems, which leads communication traffic increases in maritime frequency bands, especially in VHF (Very High Frequency) band. Thus, effective resource management is crucial to the future maritime communication systems not only to the typical terrestrial communication systems. VHF data exchange system (VDES) enables to utilize more flexible configuration according to the communication condition. This paper focuses on the VDES communication system among VDES terminals such as shore stations, ship stations and aids to navigation (AtoN) to address efficient resource allocation. We propose a resource management method considering a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technique in VDES, which has been widely used for modern terrestrial wireless networks but not for marine environments by scheduling the essential communication resources. We introduce the general channel model in marine environment and give two metrics, spectral and the energy efficiencies to examine our resource scheduling algorithm. Based on the simulation results and analysis, the proposed method provides a possibility to enhance spectral and energy efficiencies. Additionally, we present a trade-off relationship between spectral and energy efficiencies. Furthermore, we examine the resource efficiencies related to the imperfect channel estimation.

The reduction of CO2 emission has been discussed in the Marine Environment Protection committee in the International Maritime Organization as the biggest causes of GHG for the purpose of indexing CO2 amounts released into the atmosphere from ships. Accordingly, various methods including the change in the hull design to improve energy efficiency, the coating development to reduce friction resistances, the additives development for improving thermal efficiency in an engine, the low-speed operation to reduce fuel consumptions, and etc. have been applied. The main engine of a ship is an electronic engine for improving the efficiency of the whole load area. However, marine generator engines still use mechanical drive engines in intake, exhaust, and fuel injection valve drive cams. In addition, most of marine generator engines in ships apply a part-load operation of less then 80% due to an overload protection system. Therefore, marine auxiliary diesel engine set at 100% load is necessary to readjust in order to efficient operation because of part-load operation. The objective of this study is to report the results of the part-load fuel consumption improvement by injection timing readjust to identifying the operational characteristics of a marine generator engine currently operated in a ship.
In the present study, an experimental assessment has been made of the drag reducing efficiency of the outer-layer vertical blades, which were first devised by Hutchins(1). A detailed flow field measurements have been performed using 2-D time resolved PIV with a view to enabling the identification of drag reduction mechanism. In addition, an experimental investigation has been made of the applicability of outer-layer vertical blades to real ship model. The arrays of outer-layer vertical blades have been installed onto the flat side and flat bottom of a 300k KVLCC model. A series of towing tank test has been carried out to investigate resistance (CTM) reduction efficiency with various geometric parameters and installed places of blades. The installation of vertical blades led to the CTM reduction of 1.44~3.17% near the service speed.
Purpose - The primary purpose of this study is to verify whether the target set out by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for reducing carbon emissions from ships can be achieved by quantitatively analyzing the trends in technological advances of fuel oil consumption in the container shipping market. To achieve this purpose, several scenarios are designed considering various options such as eco-friendly fuels, low-speed operation, and the growth in ship size. Design/methodology - The vessel size and speed used in prior studies are utilized to estimate the fuel oil consumption of container ships and the pace of technological progress and Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulations are added. A database of 5,260 container ships, as of 2019, is used for multiple linear regression and quantile regression analyses. Findings - The fuel oil consumption of vessels is predominantly affected by their speed, followed by their size, and the annual technological progress is estimated to be 0.57%. As the quantile increases, the influence of ship size and pace of technological progress increases, while the influence of speed and coefficient of EEDI variables decreases. Originality/value - The conservative estimation of carbon emission drawn by a quantitative analysis of the technological progress concerning the fuel efficiency of container vessels shows that it is not possible to achieve IMO targets. Therefore, innovative efforts beyond the current scope of technological progress are required.

The reduction of $CO_2$ emissions has been a key target in the marine industry since the IMO's MEPC published its findings in 2009. Air lubrication method is one of the mature technologies for commercialization to reduce the frictional resistance and enhance fuel efficiency of ships. Air layer is formed by the coalescence of the injected air bubbles beyond a certain air flow rate. In this study, a model ship (${\lambda}=33.33$) of a 50,000 ton medium range tanker is equipped with an air lubrication system. The experiments were conducted in the 100 m long towing tank facility at the Pusan National University. By selecting optimal air injector configuration and distribution ratio between two injectors, the total resistance of model $R_{TM}$ was able to be reduced down to 18.1% in the model scale. Key issue was found to suppress the sideway leakage of injected air by appropriate injection parameters.

Interests on energy saving devices (ESDs) have been increased with the concern of the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) developed by the international maritime organization (IMO). To study the influence of ESDs, KVLCC2 with energy saving pre-swirl stator (PSS) was selected. To validate the computations, computed nominal wake of the model scale ship was compared with the experimental data, and the numerical uncertainty assessment was done for the full scale ship computations. The PSS changed rotational flow, which was assistant to the propeller thrust for the model and full scale ships. Performances of the full scale ships were predicted by ITTC methods, and new prediction method was proposed.

Recently, due to the rapid rise of the international oil price, the burden of fuel oil expense is relatively increasing in a ship. And the international restriction of the greenhouse gas which was generated from the burning of fuel oil is also rapidly strengthened. Therefore, to reduce the greenhouse gas and fuel oil consumption, many shipping company adopted the low speed navigation and it was focused on the improvement of fuel consumption efficiency and the usage of alternative energy in the marine engine development field. In this paper, the fuel oil consumption according to the ship's speed was measured in the actual seas and analyzed the shop test results in the shipyard and the ship navigation data from the abstract log. And then it was proposed that the ship's economic speed was 14~15kts and the optimum rpm was 140~150 in specific sea conditions.

The Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology and the Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency are building an electric smart ship using a full range of ICT with advanced technology, and are expected to demonstrate it in 2022. For the demonstration of onboard ship equipment, it needs to develop a demonstration procedure. There are 4 types of onboard equipment preferentially selected for the development of the demonstration test procedure which are an electronic chart display and information system, a ship RADAR system, a voyage data recorder, and a ship energy efficiency monitoring system. This paper describes the demonstration procedure based on the equipment standard for the electronic chart display and information system among 4 selected types of demonstration equipment, and also the verification test checklist and template is introduced.
This paper aims at investigation some operating characteristics and energy usage efficiency of a induction motor and a BLDC motor considering electric propulsion system in a small ship based on battery source. At first, performance curves of discharge voltage from the battery and current from each motor according to the load variations were analyzed. Next, variations of motor torque and rotational speed versus load change at each motor were analyzed. Finally, efficiency of energy usage of the battery and available navigation distance were compared each other. Through some comparisons and analyses, it was cleared that the BLDC motor is more suitable for the motor of the electric propulsion system in small ships based on battery source. It is expected that the results can be used as useful data for design of the electric propulsion system with batteries.

Maritime transportation is going to transfer to alternative fuels as a result of the worldwide demands toward decarbonization and tougher maritime emissions regulations. Methanol is considered as a potential marine fuel, which has the ability to reduce SOx and CO2 emissions, reduce climate change effects, and achieve the objective of green shipping. This work proposes and combines the innovative combination system of direct methanol solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), gas turbines (GT), and organic Rankine cycles (ORC) for maritime vessels. The system's primary power source is the SOFC, while the GT and PEMFC use the waste heat from the SOFC to generate useful power and improve the system's ability to use waste heat. Each component's thermodynamics model and the combined system's model are established and examined. The multigeneration system's energy and exergy efficiency are 76.2% and 30.3%, respectively. When compared to a SOFC stand-alone system, the energy efficiency of the GT and PEMFC system is increased by 19.2%. The use of PEMFC linked SOFC has significant efficiency when a ship is being started or maneuvered and a quick response from the power and propulsion plant is required.
