  • In this paper, an packet drop technique is proposed to outperform the previous RIO (RED In and Out) drop mechanism for DiffServ in ship area networks. the proposed packet drop technique does not manage the individual flows and divides them into several flow groups according to a criterion. And it guarantees the fairness between individual flows in the same QoS class through the group-based control. In simulation results of the proposed packet drop technique, the link utilization decreases than RIO. But it guarantees more data rates to DiffServ flows passing multiple bottleneck links.

  • Dynamic fault tree (DFT) and its related research methods have received extensive attention in safety analysis and reliability engineering. DFT can perform reliability modelling for systems with sequential correlation, resource sharing, and cold and hot spare parts. A technical modelling method of DFT is proposed for modelling ship collision accidents and loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCAs). Qualitative and quantitative analyses of DFT were carried out using the cutting sequence (CS)/extended cutting sequence (ECS) method. The results show nine types of dynamic fault failure modes in ship collision accidents, describing the fault propagation process of a dynamic system and reflect the dynamic changes of the entire accident system. The probability of a ship collision accident is 2.378 × 10-9 by using CS. This failure mode cannot be expressed by a combination of basic events within the same event frame after an LOCA occurs in a marine nuclear reactor because the system contains warm spare parts. Therefore, the probability of losing reactor control was calculated as 8.125 × 10-6 using the ECS. Compared with CS, ECS is more efficient considering expression and processing capabilities, and has a significant advantage considering cost.

  • This study assessed the potential for crabbing motion in waterjet ships by exclusively employing stern thrusters. The theoretical considerations were validated through practical sea trials on the naval vessel PKG (Patrol Killer Guided missile) equipped with three stern thrusters. The control forces were calculated using the force equilibrium equation. The results showed that the hull exhibited rotations and lateral movements under wind influence. The port tail exhibited a leftward turning tendency due to the wind. This phenomenon arises from the dominance of the rotational force generated by the stern thruster over the lateral force exerted by the hull, making it challenging to maintain force equilibrium. In the sea trial, the hull rotated by 10° and moved 10.8 m laterally, with a longitudinal movement of 0.26 m. Remarkably, the lateral movement surpassed the longitudinal displacement, indicating the success of the trial. The substantial lateral travel distance provided tangible evidence that the crabbing motion of the ship is achievable using only stern thrusters. This study contributes valuable insights into enhancing the maneuverability of waterjet ships, offering practical applications for naval operations and maritime activities.

  • This paper presents a synthetic control algorithm that generates the rudder command angle to track the optimal route which is composed of straight-lines among way-points with keeping a required error limit. The control algorithm comprises three main lgorithms that is a course-keeping algorithm that eliminates the yaw angle difference between optimal route and current route a track-keeping algorithm that tracks the optimal route among way-points and a turning-control algorithm that includes the generation of optimal turning routes and control method. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is assured through computer simulation.

  • The control performances for active re-reflecting wave control suggested in the previous paper have been verified in cases of regular and irregular waves in a real two dimensional wave basin. For regular waves, the control performances are investigated in terms of reflection coefficients, expected amplitudes of propagating waves and wave absorbing capabilities after cessation of wave generation, compared with those of no-control cases. For irregular waves similar verification procedures were adopted. Though there are certain constraints due to the geometrical non-linearity of wave maker and certain nonlinear characteristics due to the near field and gravity waves these experiments show that the control logic could be useful in realizing re-reflecting wave control in conditions of real wave basin.

  • Recently, various studies had been made for automatic control system of small ships, in order to improve maneuvering and to reduce labor and working on board. To achieve efficient operation of small ships, it had been accomplished to rapid development of automatic technique, but the ship operation had been more complicated because of the need to handle various gauges and instruments. To solve these problems, there are examples to be applied to the speech information processing technologies which is one of the human interface methods in the system operation of ship, but the implementation of definite system is still incomplete. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to implement the control system for ship steering using the voice recognition module.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of magnetorheological (MR) fluid based mount (MR mount in short) which can be applicable to vibration control of diesel engine of ship. In this work, a mixed - mode including squeeze mode, flow mode and shear mode is proposed and designed. In order to determine actuating damping force of MR mount required for efficient vibration control, excitation force from diesel engine is analyzed. In this analysis, a model of V-type engine is considered and the relationship between velocity and pressure of gas in torque of the piston is derived. Subsequently, by integrating the field-dependent rheological properties of commercially available MR fluid with the excitation force an appropriate size of MR mount is designed. In addition, in order to achieve maximum actuating force with geometric constraints design optimization is undertaken using ANSYS software. Through the magnetic density analysis, optimal design parameters such as bottom gap and radius of coil are determined.
