A ship can be considered as a large human-machine system and the interaction between worker and system affects the work performed and its efficiency. Inside the bridge of a ship, there exist many auditory signals as well as visual signals. However, only a few studies have been performed related to human recognition to alarm systems in bridge. In this study, auditory icons and abstract sounds are compared to find more effective means of alarm systems. the study result shows tint auditory icons are recognized faster than abstract sounds. This result is expected to be used as a basic data for developing performance criteria of auditory display inside bridge and for designing integrated ship bridge alarm system.

In this study ship collision risk analysis is performed to determine the design vessel for collision impact analysis of the maritime bridge. Method II which is a probability based analysis procedure is used to select the design vessel for collision impact from the risk analysis results. The analysis procedure, an iterative process in which a computed annual frequency of collapse(AF) is compared to the acceptance criterion, includes allocation method of acceptance criterion of annual frequency of bridge component collapse. The AF allocation by weights seems to be more reasonable than the pylon concentration allocation method because this AF allocation takes the design parameter characteristics quantitatively into consideration although the pylon concentration allocation method brings more economical results when the overestimated design collision strength of piers compared to the strength of pylon is moderately modified. From the assessment of ship collision risk for each bridge pier exposed to ship collision, a representative design vessel for all bridge components is selected. The design vessel size varies much from each other in the same bridge structure depending upon the vessel traffic characteristics.
The effects of different auditory warnings on response time and accuracy were studied in a laboratory ship-bridge work environment. Subjective preference on the type of auditory warnings was also of a primary concern. Twenty five subjects were asked to select an appropriate button for the warning sound presented with three types of auditory warning (abstract sound, auditory icon, and voice alarm) and five levels of warning situation (fire, steering failure, collision, engine failure, and low power). Results showed that the response time and accuracy was significantly affected by the types of auditory warning. The voice alarm resulted in a higher accuracy and subjective preference, as compared to the auditory icon and abstract sound. Regarding the response time, auditory icons and voice alarms were equivalent and superior to abstract sounds. Actual or potential applications of this research include guidelines for the design of integrated ship bridge systems.
In this study, the model developed by Hong (2012) was modified to describe the consecutive docking/undocking situation and was also applied to investigate the effect on seawater circulation in Busan port by consecutive docking/undocking at the connecting bridge of Busan port. Numerical experiments for various docking/undocking cases were performed by dumping the initial concentration within Busan Port and indicated that the concentration in Busan port becomes steady state without numerical wiggles after sufficient time (at least 20 or 30 days). In addition, it was found that the seawater circulation under ship docking was slightly reduced in comparison with that under ship undocking, and the approach time to the target concentration under all the docking cases increased in comparison with the undocking case.

The suspension bridge between Myodo and Gwangyang is located in the main navigation channel to Gwangyang Harbor. So, there is need for the collision protection against large vessels. As ship collision protection, artificial island with concrete block quay wall is planned. The risk analysis and non-linear numerical analysis are introduced to consider the ship collision effects. In the Gwangyang bay area, there are some different sedimental conditions in clayey stratums. For a desirable design, we classify into four zones and 2 layers in each zone, and then determine suitable soil properties considering these zones. As a ground improvement under artificial island, DCM and SCP methods are Planned.

More recently, the massive marine bridges in a ship passage have been constructed on the sea. Therefore, the ship impact protection for the bridge-piers are installed to consider the possibility of vessel collision danger. Due to the ship impact protection, the pier-scour characteristics are changed in comparison with the condition without the ship impact protection (SIP). In this study, the physical modeling for the Incheon Sea-Crossing Bridge was performed to analyze the pier-scour characteristics with respect to the vessel collision protection. The rigid and movable bed tests were conducted to evaluate the flow pattern, scour depth, and scourhole with and without the ship impact protection. The experimental results for the maximum scour depth is increased 0.24 m in W1 pier at the same location and 2.4 m in W2+3+4 piers due to the SIP installation. Especially, the maximum scour depth in W2+3+4 piers was occurred around the SIP.

Digital-ship is the next-generation ship with an one-man bridge system which consists of INS(Intelligent Navigation System), AIS(Automatic Identification System), and IMIT(Integrated Maritime Information Technology). INS implements the functions is related of the ship's navigation, and supports in the digital GIS environments optimal route planning, stranding and a collision avoidance among the ship, an economic navigation, and an integrated control of ship's engine. AIS prevents the ship's collision by means of transmitting periodically the own ship's information to the other ship or the shore control center. IMIT systems supports the integrated fiat-form in ships, the communication between a ship and a control center of the land using the INMARSAT, OrbComm, Ocean Observation Satellite, and etc. The satellite communication in ships can monitor the ship at an earth control renter. This paper deals with the method for system implementation of digital-ship and the detailed sub-system.

An integrated ship area network has functionality of remote control and autonomous management of various sensors and instruments embedded or boarded in a ship. For such environment, a wireless bridge is essential to transmit control and/or managing information to sensors or instruments from a central integrated ship area network station. In this paper, one of reliable schemes of In-ship sensor networks using a Grid-based WPAN is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on a novel grid network which allows a multi-path communication, and is robust, energy efficient. The results demonstrate that the proposed Grid-based WPAN outperforms the IEEE 802.15.4 based network in terms of success ratio and power efficiency.

A construction project of Incheon 2nd bridge, which is connected between the Incheon Song-Do New Town and the Incheon International Airport in Young-Jong-Do, have been proposed by the private capital in 1999. But the optimal span width in the bridge main span have not been decided in spite of the three investigations into the feasibility of ship's safe transit in this planned bridge. In this paper, we study the optimal main span width according to the traffic volume in the future traffic and the ship maneuverability of maximum size aspect. The result cf this study, Incheon 2nd bridge main span design is required to design two-way traffic scheme and 1,000m span width, which will satisfy the safe transit from the viewpoint of the traffic volume in the future traffic and the ship maneuverability maximum size.

In parallel with the development of ship equipment, bridge systems have been improved, but marine accidents due to human error have not been reduced. Recently, research in nautical bridge equipment has focused on suitable ergonomic designs in order to reduce these errors due to human factors. In a bridge of a ship, there are numerous auditory signals that deliver important information clearly to the sailors. However, only a few studies have been conducted related to the human recognition of these auditory signals. There are three types of auditory signals: voice alarms, abstract sounds, and auditory icons. This study was conducted in order to design more appropriate auditory icons using a sensibility evaluation method. The auditory icons were rated to have five warning situations (engine failure, fire, steering failure, low power, and collision) using the Semantic Differential Method. It is expected that the results of this study will be used as basic data for auditory displays inside bridges and for integrated bridge alarm systems.
