  • In this paper, one of reliable schemes of In-ship sensor networks using a Grid-based WPAN is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on a novel grid network which allows a multi-path communication, and is robust, energy efficient. The results demonstrate that the proposed Grid-based WPAN outperforms the IEEE 802.15.4 based network in terms of power efficiency.

  • In these days, several bridges have been built or under construction over navigational channel in Korea In these cases there must be careful consideration for the marine safety of vessels to be passed by below the bridge. This paper aims to analyze the factors influencing maritime traffic safety and to figure out ample width of main span of these kinds of bridges through the reference study and FMSS.

  • What to analyze cognitive works that are involved in ship navigation is a basic work to make alternatives for maritime safety such as development of bridge equipments, extraction of potential human errors and development of education/ training methods. In the domains in which much research on the human error has been performed such as aviation and nuclear plant, analysis methods for cognitive work analysis have been developed and applied to them. However, the research on the cognitive work analysis is not sufficient in the maritime domain. This paper proposes a method to analyze cognitive work of ship navigation. The method was developed so that some maritime characteristics and a variety of factors influencing cognitive works are reflected on cognitive work analysis processes. On the other hand, an ship collision accident was analyzed by the proposed method as a case study.

In this paper, to evaluate the shipboard working environment, the vibration levels of two kinds of ship onboard were measured and compared with engine rooms, engine control rooms and bridges by the regulation of ISO 6954: 2000(E)

  • The recent increase of fresh farm products, hazardous cargos, and high-priced goods in marine transportation has caused an increased demand of cargo owners and shipping companies with regard to the monitoring of the location and state of cargo. To meet this increase, numerous technologies are being studied for the monitoring of the cargo state. Cargo containers on a ship are loaded on a ship's deck and in a ship's hold, which is located under the deck. However, Since the developed technologies mostly transfer the container status information that collected by mobile communication, it costs a lot to install communication infrastructure on ship. And the ship's hold is completely sealed with a cover, and communication with the reader positioned at the ship's bridge is difficult. Therefore, most existing studies on container monitoring on ships have focused on the monitoring of containers loaded on a ship's deck. Accordingly, this study suggested system configuration for the monitoring of containers in a ship's hold using IP-RFID technology. The suggested system configuration was tested on an actual ship under navigation, and the test results are given in this study. The test results verified that the monitoring of containers in a ship's hold using IP-RFID technology is effective.

  • Plate and shell structure is widely applied in engineering, i.e. building roofs, aircraft wings, ship platforms, and satellite solar arrays. Its vibration problem has become increasingly prominent due to the tendency of lightening, upsizing and flexibility. As a new smart material with great actuating force and toughness, macro-fiber composite (MFC) is composed of piezoelectric fiber and epoxy resin basal body, which can be directly pasted onto the surface of plate and shell and is suitable for vibration control. This paper deduces the actuation equation of MFC coupled plate in different boundary conditions, an equivalent finite element modeling method is proposed which uses MFC actuating force as the applied excitation, and on this basis the active control simulation and experiment of MFC over plate and shell structure vibration are accomplished. The results indicate that MFC is able to implement effective control over plate and shell structure vibration in multi-band range. The comparison between experiment and simulation proves that the actuation equation deduced herein, effective and practicable, can be applied into the simulation calculation of MFC vibration control over plate and shell structure.

  • A construction project of Incheon 2nd bridge, which is connected between the Incheon Song-Do New Town and the Incheon International Airport in Young-Jong-Do, have been proposed by the private capital in 1999. But the optimal span width in the bridge main span have not been decided in spite of the three investigations into the feasibility of ship's safe transit in this planned bridge. In this paper, we study the economic analysis on port operational efficiency according to traffic schemes, me-way or two-way of vessels over 10,000G/T, in the bridge main span of this bridge. In this comparative result, total queueing time due to the one-way in the bridge main span is evaluated 20,362 hours in 2011 and 24,544 hours in 2020. Therefore the demurrage cost and the accumulation cost of freight are evaluated 19.7 billion won in 2011, and 23.3 billion won in 2020, then total accumulated costs during 33 years from 2008 until 2040 are evaluated about 768..9 billion won.

  • 전세계적으로 2002년 7월에 발효될 SOLAS 2000 규정에 의하면, 국제항해에 종사하는 선박의 경우, 선교(bridge)가 밀폐되어 외부 음향신호를 청취할 수 없을 때는 음향수신장치(SRS)를 설치해야한다. 이 연구에서는 SRS에 법적으로 요구되는 사양을 검토한 후, 부가하여 고려되어야할 사항에 대해서 논의하였다.

A study on the performance of the sacrificial anode used for cathodic protection of a marine bridge after 8 years (해상 교량에 설치된 희생양극식 전기방식의 8년 이후의 성능에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, corrosion occurred on the piles of a marine bridge located on the NamHae expressway in Korea. A sacrificial anode cathodic protection system was installed to prevent corrosion damage in the marine bridge. In the case of the marine bridge in this study, the sacrificial anode cathodic protection system was applied at the tidal and splash zones of the piles because the upper part of the structure was not corroded, and because corrosion occurs at the tidal and splash zones due to sea tides. To verify the performance of the sacrificial anode cathodic protection system 8 years later, cathodic protection (CP) current, CP potential, and degree of depolarization were measured. The experimental results on the performance of the sacrificial anode cathodic protection system from a total of 60 piles were classified into 4 categories: good CP effect results (13 piles), partial CP effect results (27 piles), temporarily erroneous results (5 piles), and need for maintenance because of delamination (15 piles). It was determined that additional repairs are required, such as the application of bulk anodes and jacket casings, for piles where the CP effect is poor.
