  • In this paper, turbulence models for considering roughness in the open source code(OpenFOAM) was investigated. Wall function in the RANS(Reynolds-averaged Navier - Stokes) turbulence model was modified considering roughness on the flat plate by using roughness function. Correlation between the first layer height in the CFD model and roughness height of the plate was observed, and the most proper roughness function, and the first layer height from the plate wall in the CFD analysis was suggested in this paper.

  • Plate that have cutout inner bottom and girder and floor etc. in hull construction absence is used much, and this is strength in case must be situated, but establish in region that high stress interacts sometimes fatally in region that there is no big problem usually by purpose of weight reduction, a person and change of freight, piping etc.. Because cutout's existence gnaws in this place, and, elastic buckling strength by load causes large effect in ultimate strength. Therefore, perforated plate elastic buckling strength and ultimate strength is one of important design criteria which must examine when decide structural elements size at early structure design step of ship. Therefore, and, reasonable elastic buckling strength about perforated plate need design ultimate strength. Calculated ultimate strength change several aspect ratioes and cutout's dimension, and thickness in this investigation. Used program applied ANSYS F.E.M code based on finite element method.

  • This paper describes a study on the tearing damage of a ship's bottom plating, during a grounding. It is widely known that different scaling laws are applied for bodies undergoing simultaneous plastic flow and crack propagation in the deformation of plate tearing. Specifically, the basic scaling law is not followed for the fracture. In this study, in order to verify the problem, plate cutting experiments for geometrically similar models have been performed. From the experimental results, it has been observed that the cutting forces and energy for the larger models are significantly lower than those of the smaller models. A simplified analytical method for the estimation of tearing is proposed, based on the experiments. It has been observed that the results of the present formula are highly correlated with the experiments.

  • In this paper the automatic plate forming system developed by the present research group is introduced, which would be helpful for other researchers. The present system consists of three parts : heating line information generation software, automatic heating apparatus and numerical control system. The numerical control system developed by the present authors is detailed. Performance test for the developed system has been carried out and good results has been obtained. As an extension of the present study, the present automatic plate fanning system will be applied to surfaces found in ship and offshore structure.

  • Incremental forming path to manufacture a thick concave steel plate using the line array roll set is designed. To find the optimum forming path, the forming processes are simulated by the finite element method. A general-purpose commercial software, MSC.MARC is used. The rolls are modeled as rigid surfaces and the thick plate is modeled as 8-node hexahedral elastic-plastic solid elements to predict accurate springback. It is found that the process can be successfully applied to the fabrication of the dual curvature ship hull plate

  • Galvanic protection method is one the cathodic protection methods and is mostly used for corrosion prevention of heat exchangers and ship's hull. In this paper, it was investigated that how cathodic potential distribution was varied with according to the bare and painted steel plates in case of galvanic anode protection. The results obtained above were as follows. 1. Cathodic potential distribution of a painted steel plate was smoothed than that of the bare steel plate all over the cathodic surface area. 2. It was shown that polarization potential of the bare steel plate was somewhat shifted to negative potential, on the contrary that of the painted steel plate was somewhat shifted from negative potential to positive potential as time gone by beginning of galvanic anode method. 3. The applied current density in order to maintain constant protection potential(-770mv SCE) in the painted steel plate was less than that of the bare steel plate because of the high resistance polarization of the painted steel plate. 4. It was suggested that required number and life-time of anode for galvanic anode protection could be decided easily with corrosion prevention coefficient obtained by experimental data.

  • Heavy-weight high speed underwater vehicle(HSUV) is launched from the submerged mother ship. For the safety point of view, it is important to confirm whether the HSUV would touch the launching mother ship. In this paper, the hydrodynamic force and moment were modeled by the polynomials of motion variables and the simple lift and drag acting on a plate and cylinder which consist of the HSUV's several parts. The mother ship was assumed as the Rankine half body to consider the flow field near the moving ship. Such hydrodynamic force and moment were included in the 6 DOF equations of motion of the HSUV and the dynamic simulations for the various conditions of the HSUV until the propeller activation were performed. Developed simulation program is expected to reduce the number of expensive sea trial test to develop safety logic of the HSUV at the initial firing stage.

  • Deflection estimation at engine room upper deck panel is performed for the actual ship structure. These deflection behaviours are basically investigated from not only the data based on the full series results of nonlinear analysis using Incremental Galerkin's Method but also actual deflection data measured from damaged ship under construction in dry dock. The effects of residual stress, initial deflection and static loading are also included. The computed estimation results of upper deck plate panel including theme effects are shown that upper deck platings of new ship expected less deflection magnitude than damaged ship.

  • Designing sophisticate ship structures that satisfy several design criteria simultaneously with minimum weight and cost is an important engineering issue. For a ship structure composed of a shell and stiffeners, this issue is more serious because their mutual effect has to be addressed. In this study, a two-stage optimization method is proposed for the conceptual design of stiffeners in a ship's prow. In the first stage, a topology optimization method is used to determine a potential stiffener distribution based on the optimal results, whereupon stiffeners are constructed according to stiffener generative theory and the material distribution. In the second stage, size optimization is conducted to optimize the plate and stiffener sections simultaneously based on a parametric model. A final analysis model of the ship-prow structure is presented to assess the validity of this method. The analysis results show that the two-stage optimization method is effective for stiffener conceptual design, which provides a reference for designing actual stiffeners for ship hulls.
