In order to secure accuracy and effectiveness of the electromagnetic compass as information sensor for ship's head up bearing with gyro compass, magnetic compass and electromagnetic compass on the sea and on the dock in land. The results obtained were as follows;1. Between the Northeast and the southsouthwest the deviation on ship's head up bearing on electromagnetic compass got easterly deviation with max. $53^{\cire}$on the East and between the Southwest and the Northnortheast westerly deviation with max. $34^{\cire}$ on the Northwest, of which values were not able to be corrected due to the angle excess of deviation adjustment.2. The varies of deviation seemed to have a tendency to increase easterly deviation on the Northeast and the East, easterly deviation after westerly deviation between the South and the Northwest, small one on the North and the Southeast.3. The varies of deviation of ship were larger than the one of around the dock, were extreme on the bow of forecastle deck and were stable on the ship's center line of compass deck at the dock in land.

The main information for a marine navigation is ship's bearing obtained from Gyro, Gyrocompass, Magneticcompass and electronic navigation systems such as LORAN, OMEGA and GPS. However, some of these systems have a disadvantage or restricted conditon involved critical problems in a war-ship and weapon system. In the work, we have done the basic resrarch, analysis of error pattern for GPS, for the development of the ship's seondary bearing sensor (GPS-Compass) to provide the back-up system of Gyro/Gyrocompass and a substitution way of Magneticcompass.

In order to study basic information on the developed electro-magnetic compass, experiments were carried out on board M. S. KAYA at the pier of Dong Kuk Steel Mill in Pusan and the Korean southern sea using a three-axis magnetic sensor from Jan. 21, 1995 to Feb. 14, 1996. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The amount of old metal on the pier was about 27,290tons~57,440tons with an average of 40,560tons, the artificial local disturbance at the pier was min. 27.1$\mu$T, max. 66.5$\mu$T, ave. 433$\mu$T for the horizontal component and min. -27.0$\mu$T, max. 45.1$\mu$T, ave. 3.7$\mu$T for the vertical component. Its direction of horizontal component was 305$^{\circ}$ with the ship's head up bearing at 225$^{\circ}$. 2. The ship's magnetic distribution on the starboard side on berthing at the pier was 17.4$\mu$T for the horizontal component and -6.2$\mu$T for the vertical component. On the ship's port side, it was 19.8$\mu$T for the horizontal component and 4.1$\mu$T for the vertical component. On the ship's starboard side at sea, the ship's magnetic distribution was 19.2$\mu$T for the horizontal component and 3.2$\mu$T for the vertical component. On the ship's port side, the readings were 22.0$\mu$T for the horizontal component and -1.8$\mu$T for the vertical component. The directions of these readings were nearly starboard side. 3. On the pier, the secular change of the artificial local disturbance decreased 8.3$\mu$T from 61.0$\mu$T to 52.7$\mu$T for the horizontal component and decreased 7.1$\mu$T from 8.9$\mu$T M 1.8$\mu$T for the vertical component. On the starboard side from its berth, the ship, s magnetic distribution increased 2.6$\mu$T from 14.8$\mu$T to 17.4$\mu$T for the horizontal component and increased -0.1$\mu$T from -6.1$\mu$T to -6.2$\mu$T for the vertical component. On the ship's port side from its berth, it increased 7.1$\mu$T from 12.7$\mu$T to 19.8$\mu$T for the horizontal component and increased 10.2$\mu$T from -6.1$\mu$T to 4.1$\mu$T for the vertical component. 4. While at sea, on the ship's starboard side, the Secular change of the ship's magnetic distribution increased 3.9$\mu$T from 15.3$\mu$T to 19.2$\mu$T for the horizontal component and increased 2.0$\mu$T from -5.2$\mu$T to -3.2$\mu$T for the vertical component. On the port side, the changes increased 11.4$\mu$T from 10.6$\mu$T to 22.0$\mu$T for the horizontal component and increased 4.9$\mu$T from -6.7$\mu$T to -1.8$\mu$T for the vertical component. Upon berthing at the pier, the deviation of the secular change increased westerly 1 degree W~ 2.5$^{\circ}$ W from 3.5$^{\circ}$ W~ 5$^{\circ}$ W M 6W with the ship's head up bearing at 225$^{\circ}$. While at sea, these increased westerly 2$^{\circ}$ ~ 3$^{\circ}$ from the Northeast to the South and increased easterly 1$^{\circ}$ ~ 8$^{\circ}$ from the Southwest to the North. 5. While at port, within 1 mile between the ship and berth of the pier, as we approached the pier, the westerly deviation increased and when we departed the pier easterly deviation increased. When approaching the pier, the deviation was smaller than the deviation when the ship was departing from the pier. When approaching the bearing at 225$^{\circ}$ with the ship's head up bearing, the varies of deviation was smaller than the varies when the ship's head up bearing was departing from it.

This paper describes on the consolidation of AIS and ARPA radar positions by comparing the AIS and ARPA radar information for the tracked ship targets using a PC-based ECDIS in Busan harbor, Korea. The information of AIS and ARPA radar target was acquired independently, and the tracking parameters such as ship's position, COG, SOG, gyro heading, rate of turn, CPA, TCPA, ship s name and MMSI etc. were displayed automatically on the chart of a PC-based ECDIS with radar overlay and ARPA tracking. The ARPA tracking information obtained from the observed radar images of the target ship was compared with the AIS information received from the same vessel to investigate the difference in the position and movement behavior between AIS and ARPA tracked target ships. For the ARPA radar and AIS targets to be consolidated, the differences in range, speed, course, bearing and distance between their targets were estimated to obtain a clear standards for the consolidation of ARPA radar and AIS targets. The average differences between their ranges, their speeds and their courses were 2.06% of the average range, -0.11 knots with the averaged SOG of 11.62 knots, and $0.02^{\circ}$ with the averaged COG of $37.2^{\circ}$, respectively. The average differences between their bearings and between their positions were $-1.29^{\circ}$ and 68.8m, respectively. From these results, we concluded that if the ROT, COG, SOG, and HDG informations are correct, the AIS system can be improved the prediction of a target ship's path and the OOW(Officer of Watch) s ability to anticipate a traffic situation more accurately.

This paper describes on the extraction of ship's real-time movement information using a combination full-function ARPA radar and ECS system that displays radar images and an electronic chart together on a single PC screen. The radar target extractor(RTX) board, developed by Marine Electronics Corporation of Korea, receives radar video, trigger, antenna bearing pulse and heading pulse signals from a radar unit and processes these signals to extract target information. The target data extracted from each pulse repetition interval in DSPs of RTX that installed in 16 bit ISA slot of a IBM PC compatible computer is formatted into a series of radar target messages. These messages are then transmitted to the host PC and displayed on a single screen. The position data of target in range and azimuth direction are stored and used for determining the center of the distributed target by arithmetic averaging after the detection of the target end. In this system, the electronic chart or radar screens can be displayed separately or simulaneously and in radar mode all information of radar targets can be recorded and replayed In spite of a PC based radar system, all essential information required for safe and efficient navigation of ship can be provided.

In recent years, the need for economical and sustainable ship routing has emerged due to the enforced regulations on environmental issues. Despite the development of weather forecasting technology, maritime accidents by rough waves have continued to occur due to incorrect weather forecasts. In this study, onboard measurements are conducted to observe the acutal situation on merchant ships in operation encountering rough waves. The types of measured data include information related to navigation (Ship's position, speed, bearing, rudder angle) and engine (engine revolutions, power, shaft thrust, fuel consumption), weather conditions (wind, waves), and ship motions (roll, pitch, and yaw). These ship experiments was conducted to 28,000 DWT bulk carrier, 63,000 DWT bulk carrier, 20,000 TEU container ship, and 12,000 TEU container ship. The actual ship experiment of each ship is intended to acquire various types of data and utilize them for multi-objective studies related to ship operation. Additionally, in order to confirm the sea conditions, the directional wave spectrum was reproduced using a wave simulation model. Through data collection from ship experiments and wave simulations, various studies could be proceeding such as the measurement for accurate wave information by marine radar and analysis for cargo collapse accidents. In addition, it is expected to be utilized in various themes from the perspective of safety and efficiency in ship operation.

Experiments were carried out to measure the variation of the compass error on ship's head up bearing by magnetic compass and electromagnetic compass on berthing at the pier in order to obtain a basic information on the utilization of autopilot system using electromagnetic compass in fishing boat. The wooden fishing boat, turned on attracting fish lamps of power consumption 85kW, steering magnetic compass and electromagnetic compass indicated westerly compass error with 7$^{\circ}$ and 13 $^{\circ}$~16$^{\circ}$ respectively. The FRP fishing boat, turned on attracting fish lamps of power consumption 130kW, electromagnetic compass indicated easterly compass error 19$^{\circ}$~23$^{\circ}$. The steel fishing boat, turned on ship's navigation equipments of power consumption 225kW, steering magnetic compass indicated westerly compass error with 16$^{\circ}$. While the difference of compass error using electromagnetic compass indicated westerly compass error with 68$^{\circ}$ on the upper deck when the navigation and fishing equipment turn on compare to turn off the equipment, it had easterly compass error with 16$^{\circ}$, 32$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$ on the forecastle deck, wheel house and compass deck respectively.
