Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the gas-liquid system. While the non-absorbable gas does not participate directly In the absorption process. its pretence does affect the overall heat and mass transfer. An experimental study was performed to investigate the heat and mass transfer characteristics of LiBr-H$_2$O solution flow ing over 6-row horizontal tubes with the water vapor absorption in the pretence of non-absorbable gases. The volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gas, air, was varied from 0.17 to 10.0%. The combined effects of the solution flow rate and its concentration on the heat and mass transfer coefficients were also examined. The presence of 2% volumetric concentration of air resulted in a 25% reduction in the Nusselt number and 41% reduction in the Sherwood number Optimum film Reynolds number was found to exist at which the heat and mass transfer reach their maximum value independent of air contents. Reduced Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. defined as the ratio of Nusselt and Sherwood numbers at given non-absorbable gas content to that with pure water vapor, were correlated to account for the reduction in the heat and mass transfer due to non-absorbable gases in a falling film absorption process.

The present study investigated the enhancement of the absorption performance by the spring wrapped around the outer surface of the vertical falling film absorber tube. Heat and mass transfer enhancements were experimentally investigated, and flow visualization was performed to observe the wettability and flow pattern of the solution. The key experimental parameters were spring diameter (0.5, 1.0 mm) and spring pitch (1, 3, 10 mm), film Reynolds number (50~150), and concentration of LiBr-$H_2O$ solution (55, 60, 65 wt%). As the spring diameter was increased, the absorption mass flux, Sherwood number, Nusselt number, heat flux, and heat transfer coefficient were increased The Nusselt and Sherwood numbers showed the maximum at the spring pitch of 3mm, and the ratio of pitch to diameter of approximately 3 and 6 for the spring diamter of 0.5 mm, respectively.

The leading edge of a turbine blade was simulated as a circular cylindrical surface. The effect of free-stream turbulence on the mass transfer upstream of the injectionhole has been investigated experimentally. The effects of injection location, blowing ratio on the Sherwood number distribution were examined as well. The mass transfer coefficients were measured by a naphthalene sublimation technique. The free-stream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is 53,000. Other conditions investigated are: free-stream turbulence intensities of 3.9% and 8.0%, injection locations of $40^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$ from the front stagnation point of the cylinder, and blowing ratios of 0.5 and 1.0. The role of the horseshoe vortex formed upstream edge of the injected jet is dicussed in detail. When the blowing ratio is unity, and the coolant jet is injected at $40^{\circ}$, the mass transfer upstream of the jet is not affected by the coolant jet at all. On the other hand, when the injection hole is located beyond $50^{\circ}$, the mass transfer upstream edge of the injection hole suddenly increases due to the formation of the horseshoe vortex, but it dereases as the free-stream turbulence intensity increases because the strength of the horseshoe vortex structure becomes weakened. The role of the horseshoe vortex is clearly evidenced by placing a rigid rod at the injection hole instead of issuing the jet. In the case of the rigid rod, the spanwise Sherwood number upstream of the injection hole is much larger due to the intense influence of the horseshoe vortex.
The present study investigates the two dimensional flow and heat/mass transfer characteristics of wavy duct with various corrugation angles. For the heat/mass transfer coefficients, a naphthalene sublimation technique is used. Numerical analysis and wall pressure measurement show detailed two dimensional flow features. The corrugation angles change from 145$^{\circ}$ to 100$^{\circ}$. The operating Reynolds numbers based on the duct hydraulic diameter vary from 700 to 3,000. The duct aspect ratio maintains 7.3. On the pressure wall, strong flow mixing enhances heat/mass transfer coefficients at the front position. In addition, the rear side of pressure wall, the near of peak, is affected by the acceleration and the shedding of main flow. On the suction wall, however, flow separation and reattachment lead to the valley and the peak of heat/mass transfer coefficient. Also, highly increasing boundary layer at the suction wall affects the decrease of heat/masst transfer. As decreasing corrugation angles, the spanwise average Sherwood number increases and the peak or the valley positions of the local Sherwood number are varied.

The charateristics of the convective mass transfer in horizontal rectangular enclosure with horizontal concentration gradients are analyzed. The effect of Grashof number(Gr) and aspect ratio(L/H) is investigated numerically using the control-volume method. Numerical results are obtained for Grashof numbers between $10^4$ and $10^6$ aspect ratios from 1 to 100 and results are compared with existing andlytical results. It is found that there exists a well defined aspect ratio for which the mean Sherwood number is maximum and the core flow changes from parallel to non-parallel at $Gr^2{Sc^2}(A^{-3}}{\geq}{10^5}$ and in the Ralongrightarrow0 regime the numerical results agreed very well with correlation derived from analytical results.

In the present study, the effects of film Reynolds number (60∼200) and volumetric content of non-absorbable gases (0∼10%) in water vapor on the absorption process of aqueous LiBr solution were investigated experimentally. The formation of solution film on the horizontal tubes of six rows was observed to be complete for Re>100. Transition film Reynolds number was found to exist above which the Nusselt number and Schmidt number diminishes with solution flow rate. As the concentration of non-absorbable gases increased, mass transfer rate decreased more seriously than heat transfer rate did. the degradation effects of non-absorbable gases seemed to be significant especially when small amount of non-absorbable gases was introduced to the pure water vapor.

The effect of tube diameter on heat and mass transfer characteristics of absorber in absorption chiller/heater using LiBr solution as a working fluid has been investigated by both of numerical and experimental study to develop a high performance and compact absorber. The diameter of the heat exchanger tube inside absorber was changed from 15.88mm to 12.70mm and 9.52mm. In numerical study a model of vapor pressure drop inside tube absorber based on a commercial 20RT absorption chiller/heater was performed. The effect of tube diameter, longitudinal pitch, vapor Reynolds number, longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio on vapor pressure drop across the heat exchanger tube banks inside absorber have been investigated and found that vapor pressure drop decreases as tube diameter increases, longitudinal pitch increases, vapor Reynolds number decreases and longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio increases. In experimental study, a system includes a tube absorber, a generator, solution distribution system and cooling water system was set up. The experimental results shown that the overall heat transfer coefficient, mass transfer coefficient. Nusselt number and Sherwood number increase as solution flow rate increases. In both of study cases, the heat and mass transfer performance increases as tube diameter decreases. Among three different tube diameters the smallest tube diameter 9.52mm has highest heat and mass transfer performance.

The heat/mass transfer characteristics in a rotating two-pass duct with and without rib turbulators are investigated in the present study. The square duct has a hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of 26.7 mm, and $1.5\;mm{\times}1.5\;mm$ square $90^{\circ}$-rib turbulators are attached on the leading and trailing walls. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 10. The Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter is kept constant at 10,000 to exclude the Reynolds effect, and the rotation number is varied from 0.0 to 0.20. In the smooth duct, the curvature of the $180^{\circ}$-turn produces Dean vortices that enhance heat/mass transfer in the post-turn region. When rib turbulators are installed, heat/mass transfer is augmented 2.5 times higher than that of the smooth duct since the main flow is turbulated by reattaching and separating in the vicinity of the duct surfaces. The duct rotation results in heat/mass transfer discrepancy so that Sherwood number ratios are higher on the trailing surface in the first-pass and on the leading surface in the second-pass. In the turning region, Dean vortices shown in the stationary case transform into one large asymmetric vortex cell, and subsequent heat/mass transfer characteristics also change. As the rotation number increases, the heat/mass transfer discrepancy enlarges.

This study numerically examined the mixing characteristics of rectangular cavity flows by using the hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM) applied to the finite difference method (FDM). Multi-relaxation time was used along with a passive scalar method which assumes that two substances have the same mass and that there is no interaction. First, we studied numerical results such as the stream function, position of vortices, and velocity profile for a square cavity and rectangular cavity with an aspect ratio of 2. The data were compared with previous numerical results that have been proven to be reliable. We also studied the mixing characteristics of a rectangular cavity flow such as the concentration profile and average Sherwood number at various Pe numbers and aspect ratios.
