A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies of eccentric hemi-spherical shells of revolution with variable thickness. Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D), the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components $u_r$, $u_{\Theta}$, and $u_z$ in the radial, circumferential, and axial directions, respectively, are taken to be periodic in ${\theta}$ and in time, and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential and kinetic energies of eccentric hemi-spherical shells with variable thickness are formulated, and the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to three or four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the shells. Numerical results are presented for a variety of eccentric hemi-spherical shells with variable thickness.
A free vibration analysis is made of a moderately-thick toroidal shell based on a shear deformation (Timoshenko-Mindlin) shell theory. This work represents an extension of earlier work by the authors which was based on a thin (Kirchoff-Love) shell theory. The analysis uses a modal approach in the circumferential direction, and numerical results are found using the differential quadrature method (DQM). The analysis is first developed for a shell of revolution of arbitrary meridian, and then specialized to a complete circular toroidal shell. A second analysis, based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, is presented to cover thick shells. The shear deformation theory is validated by comparing calculated results with previously published results for fifteen cases, found using thin shell theory, moderately-thick shell theory, and the theory of elasticity. Consistent agreement is observed in the comparison of different results. New frequency results are then given for moderately-thick and thick toroidal shells, considered to be completely free. The results indicate the usefulness of the shear deformation theory in determining natural frequencies for toroidal shells.

Optimization Analysis of angle-ply laminated shells, having one pair of opposite edges supported, are investigated on the basis of the first-order shear deformation theory. The equations of motion of the shell are solved by the use of ritz method. A range of results are presented for composite shells to show the effects of lamination angle and number of layers on natural frequency. In addition, an analysis of the strain energy distributions is used as an aid for the better understanding of the vibration characteristics of the shells.
In this paper, stability analysis is carried out far the out of plane behaviors under compressive loads to the conical direction. It is not easy to obtain the analytic solutions about the stability analysis of anisotropic conical shells consisted of composite materials. For solving this problems, this paper used the finite difference method which is one of the numerical methods. The characteristics of the buckling behaviors of anisotropic laminated composite conical shells may be different according to a variety of causes, that is, the change of fiber angle, material arrangement, radius ratio, shape ratio and so on. The objective of this study is to analyze buckling behaviors of circular conical shells with shear deformation effects and to prove the advantage of composite materials.
The vibration characteristic analysis of sandwich cylindrical shells subjected with magnetorheological (MR) elastomer and constraining layer are considered in this study. And, the discrete finite element method is adopted to calculate the vibration and damping characteristics of the sandwich cylindrical shell system. The effects of thickness of the MR elastomer, constraining layer, applied magnetic fields on the vibration characteristics of the sandwich shell system are also studied in this paper. Additionally, the rheological properties of the MR elastomer can be changed by applying various magnetic fields and the properties of the MR elastomer are described by complex quantities. The natural frequencies and modal loss factor of the sandwich cylindrical shells are calculated for many designed parameters. The core layer of MR elastomer is found to have significant effects on the damping behavior of the sandwich cylindrical shells.
A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies of hyperboloidal shells free at the top edge and clamped at the bottom edge like a hyperboloidal cooling tower by the Ritz method based upon the circular cylindrical coordinate system instead of related 3-D shell coordinates which are normal and tangent to the shell midsurface. The Legendre polynomials are used as admissible displacements. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated. Natural frequencies from the present 3-D analysis are also compared with those of straight beams with circular cross section, complete (not truncated) conical shells, and circular cylindrical shells as special cases of hyperboloidal shells from the classical beam theory, 2-D thin shell theory, and other 3-D methods.
In this study, the stability of laminated homogeneous and non-homogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shells with freely supported edges under a uniform hydrostatic pressure is investigated. It is assumed that the composite material is orthotropic and the material properties depend only on the thickness coordinate. The basic relations, the modified Donnell type stability and compatibility equations have been obtained for laminated non-homogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shells. Applying Galerkin method to the foregoing equations, the expression for the critical hydrostatic pressure is obtained. The appropriate formulas for the single-layer and laminated, cylindrical and complete conical shells made of homogeneous and non-homogeneous, orthotropic and isotropic materials are found as a special case. Finally, effects of non-homogeneity, number and ordering of layers and variations of shell characteristics on the critical hydrostatic pressure are investigated.

In order to utilize mass of oyster shells for a partial substitute material for reclamation, we investigate the shear characteristics of dredged sluge mixed with oyster shells. the apparent modulus of elasticity of the this mixture are obtained from the triaxial compression tests and is utilized to characterize the apparent modulus of elastic of the oyster shells by carrying out some numerical analysis based upon the homogenization theory. We got the conclusion by a series of experiment, 1) It is verified that modulus of elasticity of dredged clay is improved by mixing with oyster shells. 2) The homogenization method for deducing apparent modulus of elasticity of oyster shells, which can consider micro-structure of mixed soil, is introduced. The elastic modulus is affected from the skeleton structure of oyster shell. The effect of 49kPa is bigger than that of 98kPa.

Recently, the construction industry in South Korea, has experienced many difficulties in lack of supply with construction materials. Since waste shells can be possibly used as replacement materials of fine aggregate, the successful application can resolve, to some extent at least, the economic problems and environmental problems. In this research, the basic physical properties of the mortar which was used as fine aggregate substitute (clam, cockle, manila clam, oyster) were evaluated. According to the experimental results, the absorption rate and compressive strength of samples with various shells were equivalent to that of plain mortar. The mortar which replaced 25% of oyster shell with sand showed approximately 30% lower compressive strength and twice as much absorption as plain mortar. It was found that waste shells can be used as replacement materials of fine aggregate, but the oyster shell requires further experimental works in order for its successful application.
The formulation of a non-linear shear deformable shell element is presented for the solution of stability problems of stiffened plates and shells. The formulation of the geometrical stiffness presented here is exactly defined on the midsurface and is efficient for analyzing stability problems of thick plates and shells by incorporating bending moment and transverse shear resultant force. As a result of the explicit integration of the tangent stiffness matrix, this formulation is computationally very efficient in incremental nonlinear analysis. The element is free of both membrane and shear locking behaviour by using the assumed strain method such that the element performs very well in the thin shells. By using six degrees of freedom per node, the present element can model stiffened plate and shell structures. The formulation includes large displacement effects and elasto-plastic material behaviour. The material is assumed to be isotropic and elasto-plastic obeying Von Mises's yield condition and its associated flow rules. The results showed good agreement with references and computational efficiency.
