  • This paper reports the result of an investigation into wave propagation in orthotropic laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shells in hydrothermal environment. A dynamic model of laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shell is derived based on Cooper-Naghdi shell theory considering the effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia. The wave characteristics curves are obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of layer numbers, thickness of piezoelectric layers, thermal loads and humid loads on the wave characteristics curves are discussed through numerical results. The solving method presented in the paper is validated by the solution of a classical elastic shell non-containing the effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia. The new features of the wave propagation in laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shells with various laminated material, layer numbers and thickness in hydrothermal environment and some meaningful and interesting results in this paper are helpful for the application and the design of the ultrasonic inspection techniques and structural health monitoring.

  • In this article, stability of composite conical shells subjected to dynamic external pressure is investigated by numerical and experimental methods. In experimental tests, cross-ply glass woven fabrics were selected for manufacturing of specimens. Hand-layup method was employed for fabricating the glass-epoxy composite shells. A test-setup that includes pressure vessel and data acquisition system was designed. Also, numerical analyses are performed. In these analyses, effect of actual geometrical imperfections of experimental specimens on the numerical results is investigated. For introducing the imperfections to the numerical models, linear eigen-value buckling analyses were employed. The buckling modes are multiplied by very small numbers that are derived from measurement of actual specimens. Finally, results are compared together while a good agreement between results of imperfect numerical analyses and experimental tests is observed.

  • Sandwich shells made of composite materials are the main focus on recent literature parallel to the requirements of industry. They are commonly chosen for the modern engineering applications which require moderate strength to weight ratio without dependence on conventional manufacturing techniques. The investigations on hyperbolic paraboloidal formed sandwich composite shells are limited in the literature contrary to shells that have a number of studies, consisting of doubly curved surfaces, arbitrary boundaries and laminations. Because of the lack of contributive data in the literature, the aim of this study is to present the effects of curvature on hyperbolic paraboloidal formed, layered sandwich composite surfaces that have arbitrary boundary conditions. Analytical solution methodology for the analyses of stresses and deformations is based on Third Order Shear Deformation Theory (TSDT). Double Fourier series, which are specialized for boundary discontinuity, are used to solve highly coupled linear partial differential equations. Numerical solutions showing the effects of shell geometry are presented to provide benchmark results.

  • The transfer influence coefficient method which is an vibration analysis algorithm based on the transfer of influence coefficient is applied to the free vibration analysis of double cylindrical shells. After the computational programs for the free vibration analysis of double cylindrical shells were made using the transfer influence coefficient method and the transfer matrix method, we compared the results using the transfer influence coefficient method with those by the transfer matrix method. The transfer influence coefficient method provided the good computational results in the free vibration analysis of double cylindrical shells. In particular, The results of the transfer influence coefficient method are superior to those of the transfer matrix method when the stiffness of internal springs connecting a inside cylindrical shell and a outside cylindrical shell is very large.

  • An approximate theory of circular chlindrical shells under arbitrary load is derived on the basis of Vlasov's semimembrane theory. With this approximate theory concrete cylindrical shells subjected to wind loading is analized and its accuracy is investigated with the results of Donnell's equation. In this study the foollowing results are abtained : (1) The expression of .kappa.$\_$2/=.part.$\^$2/.omega./.part. s$\^$2/ for the change of curvature gives much simplicated closed form colution. (2) This approximate theory is to be applicable with sufficient accuracy in the stress analysis of concrete cylindreical shells which the ratio L/D is equal or greater than three.

  • This paper deals with multiobjective optimization of symmetrically laminated composite truncated circular conical shells subjected to external uniform pressure load and thermal load. The design objective is the maximization of the weighted sum of the critical buckling load and fundamental frequency. The design variable is the fibre orientations in the layers. The performance index is formulated as the weighted sum of individual objectives in order to obtain optimal solutions of the design problem. The first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used in the mathematical formulation of laminated truncated conical shells. Finally, the effect of different weighting factors, length-to-radius ratio, semi-cone angle and boundary conditions on the optimal design is investigated and the results are compared.

  • A numerical study is performed to investigate the impacts of thermal loading on the vibration and buckling of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) conical shells. Thermo-mechanical properties of constituents are considered to be temperature-dependent. Considering the shear deformation theory, the energy functional is derived, and applying the variational differential quadrature (VDQ) method, the mass and stiffness matrices are obtained. The shear correction factors are accurately calculated by matching the shear strain energy obtained from an exact three-dimensional distribution of the transverse shear stresses and shear strain energy related to the first-order shear deformation theory. Numerical results reveal that considering temperature-dependent material properties plays an important role in predicting the thermally induced vibration of FG-CNTRC conical shells, and neglecting this effect leads to considerable overestimation of the stiffness of the structure.

  • In the context of classic conical shell formulation, nonlinear forced vibration analysis of truncated conical shells and annular plates made of multi-scale epoxy/CNT/fiberglass composites has been presented. The composite material is reinforced by carbon nanotube (CNT) and also fiberglass for which the material properties are defined according to a 3D Mori-Tanaka micromechanical scheme. By utilizing the Jacobi elliptic functions, the frequency-deflection curves of truncated conical shells and annular plates related to their forced vibrations have been derived. The main focus is to study the influences of CNT amount, fiberglass volume, open angle, fiber angle, truncated distance and force magnitude on forced vibrational behaviors of multi-scale truncated conical shells and annular plates.

  • In general, the strength and stiffness of laminated composite cylinderical shells are very sensitive to the variation of slenderness parameters, some coupling-stiffness parameters, lamination angles, stacking sequence and number of layers. In the paper, the effects of these factors on the strength and buckling reliabilities of GFRP laminated cyclinderical shells are investigated based on the proposed strength and buckling limit state models. It may be concluded that the applicable ranges of the slenderness limits of the strength and buckling failure criteria for laminated composite cylinderical shells should be indentified and incorporated into the design formula with appropriate safety factors which provide uniform consistent reliability for balanced design in practice.
