The effect of geochemical characteristics and environmental factors on the growth of cultured Arkshell Scapharca broughtonii at several shellfish-farming bays on the South coast of Korea (남해 연안 피조개 (Scapharca broughtonii) 양식장의 환경특성)

  • To assess the effects of environmental factors on the sustainability of cultured ark shell Scapharca broughtonii production, we investigated the habitat characteristics of shellfish-farming bays (Gangjin Bay, Yeoja Bay, Keoje Bay and Deukryang Bay). We measured the physiochemical parameters (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chemical oxygen demand and Chlorophyll a) and the geochemical characteristics (chemical oxygen demand, ignition loss, C/N ratio and C/S ratio). Surface sediments were collected from several shellfish-farming bays to examine the geochemical characteristics of both the benthic environment and heavy metal pollution. The grain sizes for Gangjin Bay, Yeoja Bay and Keoje Bay were similar, at the ratio of silt and clay in comparison with Deukryang bay of it. The C/N ratio was more than 5.9, reflecting the range arising from the mix of marine organisms and organic matter. The C/S ratio (more than 4.2) showed that the survey area had anoxic or sub-anoxic bottom conditions. The index of accumulation rate (Igeo) of the metals showed that those research areas can be classified as heavily polluted, heavily to moderately polluted, or more or less unpolluted, respectively. We suggested that the growth of ark shell Scapharca broughtonii in the shellfish-farming bay was effected by the various environmental conditions.

Anatomical Distribution of Paralytic Shellfish Toxin in Bay Scallops Argopecten irradians Along the Gyeongnam Coast, Korea (경남 연안 해만 가리비(Argopecten irradians)의 부위별 마비성 패류독소 분포)

  • To understand the characteristics of paralytic shellfish poisoning in a major production area of the bay scallop Argopecten irradians in Korea, the seasonal variation and anatomical distribution of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) were determined in bay scallops collected from the Gyeongnam coast of Korea from March to May 2018. PST levels in bay scallops in the survey area showed remarkable seasonal variation. PST was first detected at a level of 0.42 mg/kg on April 2, 2018, and the highest toxin level (3.15 mg/kg) was recorded on April 12. Among the tissues of bay scallops, the highest proportion of PST was found in the viscera ($54.9%{\pm}17.8%$), followed by the adductor ($22.8%{\pm}10.9%$), gonads ($8.9%{\pm}4.6%$), gills ($7.1%{\pm}3.7%$), and mantle ($6.3%{\pm}.8%$). In addition, with higher PST levels in the whole tissues of bay scallops, the proportion of PST in the viscera increased, whereas those in the mantle, gill, and gonad tissues decreased. In a high-toxicity group with more than 2.0 mg/kg PST in the whole tissues, the proportion of PST in the viscera was $71.8%{\pm}6.7%$.

  • Okadaic acid (OA) group toxins, including OA and its analogs, such as dinophysis toxins (DTXs), have been reported to cause diarrheal shellfish poisoning (DSP). These toxins are primarily produced by dinoflagellates and are accumulated in bivalves. Recently, the presence of Dinophysis sp., a causative alga of DSP, has been reported along the coasts of Korea, posing a potential risk of contamination to domestic seafood and exerting an impact on both the production and consumption of marine products. Accordingly, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have established standards for the permissible levels of OA group toxins in marine products for safety management. Additionally, in line with international initiatives, the domestic inclusion and regulation of DTX2 among the substances falling under the purview of management outlined by the 2022 diarrheal shellfish toxin standard have been implemented. In this study, we reviewed the physicochemical properties of OA group toxins, their various exposure routes (such as acute toxicity, genotoxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity), and the relative toxicity factors associated with these toxins. We also performed a comparative assessment of the methods employed for toxin analysis across different countries. Furthermore, we aimed to conduct a broad review of human exposure cases and assess the international guideline for risk management of OA group toxins.

Negative Correlation between the Prevalence of Norovirus and High Bacterial Loads of Escherichia coli in Oysters Crassostrea gigas

  • Seasonal variation in the prevalence of norovirus in oysters Crassostrea gigas was investigated and compared to levels of Escherichia coli, a fecal indicator in oysters. Oysters were collected from Iwon-myeon, Taean-gun, Korea, a primary production area for European Union export of oysters between 2013 and 2014. We observed seasonality in the prevalence of norovirus in oysters, with a higher prevalence and viral load detected during winter months. Oysters taken from production areas that complied with the European Union standard for raw consumption (< 230 MPN/100 g of E. coli) had 22.1% of the samples test positive for norovirus (15/68 samples). However, norovirus was not detected in any of the samples (0%, 0/4 samples) that were collected from production sites that exceeded the standard fecal contamination level for raw consumption (> 230 MPN/100 g of E. coli). These results indicated that there is a negative correlation between the prevalence of norovirus and high levels of E. coli in oysters. Therefore, our results suggest that current food safety guidelines using only a bacterial fecal contamination indicator, E. coli, may not adequately assess shellfish production areas for viral and bacterial contamination.

An Overview of Kenyan Aquaculture: Current Status, Challenges, and Opportunities for Future Development

  • The Kenyan aquaculture sector is broadly categorized into freshwater aquaculture and mariculture. Whereas freshwater aquaculture has recorded significant progress over the last decade, the mariculture sector has yet to be fully exploited. The Kenyan aquaculture industry has seen slow growth for decades until recently, when the government-funded Economic Stimulus Program increased fish farming nationwide. Thus far, the program has facilitated the alleviation of poverty, spurred regional development, and led to increased commercial thinking among Kenyan fish farmers. Indeed, national aquaculture production grew from 1,000 MT/y in 2000 (equivalent to 1% of national fish production) to 12,000 MT/y, representing 7% of the national harvest, in 2010. The production is projected to hit 20,000 MT/y, representing 10% of total production and valued at USD 22.5 million over the next 5 years. The dominant aquaculture systems in Kenya include earthen and lined ponds, dams, and tanks distributed across the country. The most commonly farmed fish species are Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, which accounts for about 75% of production, followed by African catfish Clarias gariepinus, which contributes about 21% of aquaculture production. Other species include common carp Cyprinus carpio, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, koi carp Cyprinus carpio carpio, and goldfish Carassius auratus. Recently, Kenyan researchers have begun culturing native fish species such as Labeo victorianus and Labeo cylindricus at the National Aquaculture Research Development and Training Centre in Sagana. Apart from limited knowledge of modern aquaculture technology, the Kenyan aquaculture sector still suffers from an inadequate supply of certified quality seed fish and feed, incomprehensive aquaculture policy, and low funding for research. Glaring opportunities in the Kenyan aquaculture industry include the production of live fish food, e.g., Artemia, daphnia and rotifers, marine fish and shellfish larviculture; seaweed farming; cage culture; integrated fish farming; culture of indigenous fish species; and investment in the fish feed industry.

Effects of Temperature and Salinity on the Survival and Metabolism of Tresus keenae (Mollusca: Bivalvia)

  • We examined the variation in survival and the respiration and filtration rates of Tresus keenae in response to changes in water temperature and salinity. The survivorship of animals exposed to temperatures below $25^{\circ}C$ for 7 days was $80\%$; however, all test animals died on the fourth day at $28^{\circ}C$. The upper lethal temperature over 7 days was $25.9^{\circ}C$. After exposure to lower temperatures, $93\%$ ofthe animals survived at temperatures over $5^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. Survivorship rapidly decreased below $4^{\circ}C$ with all test animals dying at $2^{\circ}C$ on the eighth day. The $LT_{50}$ over 10 days was $4.8^{\circ}C$. The respiration and filtration rates of T. keenae increased as temperature increased. It is believed that energy consumption increases as a result of the increased respiration rate at temperatures above the upper lethal temperature. At temperatures below the lower lethal temperature, the metabolic rate of T. keenae was substantially lowered. In response to changes in salinity, the survivorship of T. keenae was $90\%$ at 30.2 psu after exposure for 5 days; at below 26.8 psu, all test animals died by the fifth day. The $LS_{50}$ was 29.1 psu. As salinity decreased, both the respiration rate and the filtration rate decreased. At 23.5 psu, the respiration and filtration rates decreased by 48 and $34\%$, respectively. These data have implications for increasing efficiency in the production and management of shellfish aquaculture farms.

Effects of Light Wavelengths on the Growth and Paralytic Shellfish Toxin Production of Alexandrium catenella and A. pacificum (유독 와편모조류 Alexandrium catenella와 A. pacifcium의 생장과 마비성 독소 생산에 미치는 빛의 파장의 영향)

  • To supply a stable amount of standard material to detect paralytic shellfish toxin (PST), we examined possible increases in toxic content in Alexandrium catenella and A. pacificum using a light emitting diode (LED), which is one of the most eco-friendly and economical lighting method. When comparing the growth rates of organisms and wavelengths of light used, the half saturation constants (Ks) of red wavelength were higher than those of other wavelengths. In contrast, the Ks of blue wavelength were lower than those of other wavelengths. Moreover, when comparing the toxic contents and wavelengths of light used, red wavelength produced approximately 8 times more toxic content in A. catenella and approximately 3.2 times more toxic content in A. pacificum than other wavelengths. Thus, the toxic content present in the organism might be closely related to the Ks of light. The optimum light source to be used to ensure economically ef ective and productive growth in an Alexandrium culture system (photo-bioreactor) would likely consist of a two-phase culture, wherein a blue LED is used during the lag and exponential phases to increase growth rates, followed by the use of a red LED during late exponential and stationary phases to achieve increased PST yields.

Risk Assessment and Work in Field for HACCP System Construction of Canned Seasoned Broughton's Ribbed Ark Scapharca broughtonii (피조개(Scapharca broughtonii) 조미 통조림의 HACCP 시스템 구축을 위한 위해평가 및 현장적용)

  • This study assessed the biological and physicochemical hazards involved in establishing a hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) for canned seasoned Broughton's ribbed ark Scapharca broughtonii and examined the critical control points (CCPs) in the field. Following the basic principles of the HACCP system, the hazard-evaluation procedures were enacted during the production of canned seasoned Broughton's ribbed ark after field investigation of a seafood product company in Korea. CCPs were determined using canned seasoned Broughton's ribbed ark with the corresponding control measures. The HACCP system was applied to each step in processing the product. The results indicated that inspection of raw materials, filling, sterilization, and alien substance detection were the most important CCPs. These results can be used to prevent and control food safety problems in the production of canned seasoned Broughton's ribbed ark.

  • Since the onset of its economic reform and the open door policy in the late 1970s, China's overall economic growth rate has been continuing about 10% per year. The marine sector is not allowed exception, aquatic products increased sharply from 4.66 million MT in 1978 to 36.02 million MT in 1997, and then China is remained the largest producing country in the world aquatic market and her role would be expanded. Korea having a common boundaries to China is subjected unescapably both in domestic and export markets by the influence of the remarkable growth of China's aquatic products. If China were admitted entrance of WTO(World Trade Organization)in the near future, her influence is getting more serious. Well, we are necessary to understand the characteristics of China's aquatic products and to review fishery policies implemented by the China government. This paper is organized into two major parts, the one includes the structural changes of aquatic products, fishing and cultivating in the coast, latent and estimated production in China, and the other includes the main contents of fishery policies and measures of government administration. A characteristic of China's aquatic products is that cultivated production, especially, shellfish outputs continues to rapid increase. The major means of administration are an execution of fishing license system and setting up no-fishing zone and closed season for fishery. China is no longer a marginal player in international economic and world aquatic market. So, we will not only understand China's aquatic conditions and problems, but will also see the usefulness in continuing the cooperative relationship for a long time to come.

A study on the Problematic and Effective Framework of the National Aquatic Animal Health Management and Legislation in Korea (수산생물질병에 대한 국가관리체제의 문제점과 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • During the last two decades, the rapid increase in aquaculture world wide, particularly in finfish and shellfish culture, is the result of both area expansion and production intensification. Under these conditions, the prevalence and spread of infectious diseases have increased as a result of higher infection pressure and decreased resistance of the aquatic animals. Accordingly, the effective control of infectious diseases has become more and more important to development of aquaculture. Recently the Pathology Team of National Fisheries Research and Development(NFRDI), has played pivotal roles in establishing the national management and control system of aquatic animal health and disease by new legislative works and technical guidelines. Under the national aquatic animal disease control framework, the Pathology Team of NFRDI and MOMAF(Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) should also establish effective management and regulations, with the support of enforcement and monitoring policies. In conjunction with effective aquatic disease national management, financial assistance or alternative compensation options for aquaculture should also be available in the event of production losses or eradication system.
