Thermal Performance Analysis of a Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchanger with Plate Fins of Various Shape (다양한 형상의 판형 휜을 장착한 원통다관형 열교환기의 열성능 해석)

  • In this study, a highly efficient shell-and-tube heat exchanger with plate fins is considered to improve thermal performance of the conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger. This type of shell-and-tube heat exchanger with plate fins of various shape is simulated three-dimensionally using a commercial thermal-fluid analysis code. CFX4.4. The effect of the shape of the plate fin on heat transfer characteristics is also investigated by the simulation. Plate fins of four different shapes. plane, plane-slit. wave. and wave-slit fins, are considered. The flow fields, pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in the heat exchanger are calculated. It is proved that the shell-and-tube heat exchanger with plate fins is superior to the conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger without plate fins in terms of heat transfer. The shape of the plate fin is important in the performance of a heat exchanger such as heat transfer and pressure drop.

  • The automatic design of shell & tube type oil cooler can be used in real industrial environments. Since the automatic design system is intended to be used in small companies, it is designed to be operated well under environments of CAD package in the personal computer. It has adopted GUI in design system, and has employed DCl language. Design parameters to be considered in the design stage of shell and tube type oil cooler are type of oil cooler, outer diameter, thickness, length of tube, tube arrangement, tube pitch, flow rate, inlet and outlet temperature, physical properties, premissive pressure loss on both sides, type of baffle plate, baffle plate cutting ratio, clearance between baffle plate outer diameter and shell inner diameter and clearance between baffle plate holes. As a result, the automatic design system of shell & tube type oil cooler is constructed by the environment of CAD software using LISP. We have built database of design data for various kinds of shell & tube type oil coolers. The automatic design system have been assessed and compared with existing specification of design. Good agreement with Handbook of heat exchanger and design dta of real industrial environments has been found.

  • A numerical simulation on the heat transfer and flow field was carried out to improve the performance of the shell and tube heat exchanger. The steady incompressible 3-D Navier-Stokes solution is obtained with the actual operational condition and geometry of the heat exchanger. Based on this study, it is noted that the present geometry of the heat exchanger causes poor heat transfer since the air inside shell does not flow through the tube bundle, but around it. The enhancement of the heat transfer can be achieved by the variation of the design factor like the sealing strip located on the top/bottom and middle of the baffle, but it causes the increasement of the pressure drop. In this paper, the effects of the location and size of the sealing strips and flow rate through the heat exchanger on the heat transfer and pressure drop are studied.

  • The numerical simulations on the heat transfer and flow field were carried out for the improvement of the performance of the shell and tube heat exchanger. The steady incompressible 3-D Navier-Stokes solution is obtained with the actual operational condition and geometry of the heat exchanger.   • Intercooling and aftercooling are required in order to operate air compressor, these are conducted through air-cooled or water-cooled heat exchangers. This study aims to find more suitable type of heat exchanger as a water-cooled intercooler of air compressor. Comparative performance evaluation among fin-tube heat exchanger and shell-and-tube (S&T) heat exchanger having various tubes such as circular tube, spiral tube, and internally finned tube was conducted. Thermal-hydraulic performance of each heat exchanger type is evaluated in terms of temperature drop and pressure drop. The comparisons show that shell-and-tube heat exchangers may have similar and larger heat transfer capacity to the fin-tube heat exchanger if tube diameter is reduced and multiple pass is adopted. For these cases, however, compressed air pressure drop in shell-and-tube heat exchanger become much larger than that in fin-tube heat exchanger.

  • According to the wear detection history for the steam generator tubes in the nuclear power plant, the outer tubes inside the steam generator have more problems on the flow-induced vibration than inner tubes. Many researchers and engineers have used a specified added mass coefficient for a given tube array during the design stage of the steam generator even though the coefficient is not constant for entire tube in cylindrical shell. The aim of this study is to find out the distribution of added mass coefficients for each tube along the radial location. When numbers of tubes inside a cylindrical shell are increased, values of added mass coefficients are also increased. Added mass coefficients at outer tubes are less than those of inner tubes and they are decreased with increasing the gap between the outermost tube and the cylindrical shell. It also turns out when the gap between the outermost tube and the cylindrical shell approaches infinite value, the added mass coefficient converges to an asymptotic value of given tube array in a free fluid field.

  • The propose of study analyze a TEMA(Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) E shell and tube heat exchanger performance with 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 baffles and 16, 20 tubes. In this investigate measured a variation of the heat exchanger cooling capacity change within each number of baffle and tube number and determined optimal number of baffle. designs for industry applications are optimized using the analysis of test results.

  • The present work aims to determine the overall pressure losses in the shell from the point of entry of the fluid to the outlet point of fluid of shell and tube heat exchanger. The main contribution of the present work is concerned with calculating the pressure drop in the interior section and window section. Shell-side flow velocity distributions have been evaluated. We assume that the shell-side fluid is turbulent. The calculation procedure is based upon the Delaware method. Evaluation of pressure drop on the shell side will be helpful for a designer or manufacturer of a heat exchanger.

  • The thermal performance of a modular shell and tube-bundle heat exchanger has been analyzed using section-by-section method. Investigated are the effects of air and water inlet conditions on condensation heat transfer of horizontal tubes. It is found that they are significant for the heat transfer of the modular shell and tube-bundle heat exchanger It is shown that the predictions and experimental results are in good agreements.

  • The wrinkling in the electromagnetic tube compression with a mandrel is remarkably smaller than that of the process without it. To analyze this phenomenon, the critical forming parameters such as the ratio of the clearance to the shell radius, the ratio of the thickness to the shell radius, and the ratio of the applied pressure to the standard pressure are introduced tp consider the effect of the mandrel, in addition to those of the thickness of shell and applied loads. The amplification ratio is also used to observe the magnitude of amplification. The results obtained by 2-D finite element method show that the initial imperfection embedded in the radius of cylindrical shell is the dominant factor to determine the final shape of the tube compression, and that the amplification ratio tends to have smaller values with the smaller clearance ratio and also with the larger thickness and pressure ratios.
