Buildings featuring a transfer structure can be commonly found in metropolitan cities situated in regions of lower seismicity. A transfer structure can be in the form of a rigid plate or an array of deep girders positioned at the podium level of the building to support the tower structure of the building. The anomalous increase in the shear force demand on the tower walls above the podium is a major cause for concern. Design guidance on how to quantify these adverse effects is not available. In this paper a simplified method for quantifying the increase in the shear force demand on the tower walls is presented. In view of the very limited ductile nature of this type of construction the analysis presented herein is based on linear elastic behaviour.

In the present paper, a coaxial rotating smeared crack model is proposed for mass concrete in three-dimensional space. The model is capable of applying both the constant and variable shear transfer coefficients in the cracking process. The model considers an advanced yield function for concrete failure under both static and dynamic loadings and calculates cracking or crushing of concrete taking into account the fracture energy effects. The model was utilized on Koyna Dam using finite element technique. Dam-water and dam-foundation interactions were considered in dynamic analysis. The behavior of dam was studied for different shear transfer coefficients considering/neglecting fracture energy effects. The results were extracted at crest displacement and crack profile within the dam body. The results show the importance of both shear transfer coefficient and the fracture energy in seismic analysis of concrete dams under high hydrostatic pressure.

Existing strut-and-tie model cannot be applied to analysis of slender beams without shear reinforcement because shear transfer mechanism is not formed. In the present study, a new strut-and-tie model with rigid joint was developed. Basically, concrete strut is modeled as a frame element which can transfer shear force (or moment) as well as axial force. Employing Rankine failure criterion, failure strength due to shear-tension and shear-compression developed in compressive concrete strut was defined. For verification, various test specimens were analyzed and the results were compared with tests. The proposed strut-and-tie model predicted shear strength and failure displacement with reasonable precision, addressing the design parameters such as shear reinforcement, concrete compressive strength, and shear span ratio.

Recently, the use of transfer slab system has increased greatly. However, several construction problems are being encountered owing to its excessive thickness. Therefore, in this study, a transfer slab system that uses a reverse drop panel, which can utilize the facility space of the pit floor by reducing the transfer slab thickness, was considered. To investigate the shear behavior of transfer slab system that uses the reverse drop panel, the two-way shear strength of transfer slab-column connection with the reverse drop panel was analyzed using nonlinear FE analysis. In addition, the two-way shear strength evaluations of transfer slab with the reverse drop panel conducted using the existing evaluation methods were verified by comparing the strengths predicted by those methods with the results of nonlinear FE analysis.
Although several types of rigid shear connectors have been developed particularly to increase load-carrying capacity, application is limited due to the complicated details of such connection. In this study, push-out tests were performed for specimens with hybrid shear connectors using headed studs and shear plates to identify the effects of each parameter on the structural performance of such shear connection. The test parameters included steel ratios of headed stud to shear plate, connection length, and embedded depth of shear plates. The peak strength and residual strength were estimated using various shear transfer mechanisms such as stud shear, concrete bearing, and shear friction. The hybrid shear connectors using shear plates and headed studs showed large load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity. The peak strength was predicted by the concrete bearing strength of the shear plates. The residual strength was sufficiently predicted by the stud shear strength of headed studs or by shear friction strength of dowel reinforcing bars. Further, the finite element analysis was performed to verify the shear transfer mechanism of the connection with hybrid shear connector.

This paper presents an evaluation of shear transfer across cracks in reinforced concrete through finite element modelling (FEM) and analytical predictions. The aggregate interlock is one of the mechanisms responsible for the shear transfer between two slip surfaces of a crack; the others are the dowel action, when the reinforcement contributes resisting a parcel of shear displacement (reinforcement), and the uncracked concrete comprised by the shear resistance until the development of the first crack. The aim of this study deals with the development of a 3D numerical model, which describes the behavior of Z-type push-off specimen, in order to determine the properties of interface subjected to direct shear in terms cohesion and friction angle. The numerical model was validated based on experimental data and a parametric study was performed with the variation of the concrete strength. The numerical results were compared with analytical predictions and a new equation was proposed to predict the maximum shear stress in cracked concrete.

Cracks in reinforced concrete members are important element in structural analysis and design. It is clear from the test results that shear strength of cracked member is remarkably degraded compared with uncracked one. However, considerable amount of shear resistance by such mechanisms as aggregate interlock and dowel action is still active. There are various approaches to shear transfer estimation including finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, upper bound theory of plasticity, etc., but working out comprehensive and consistent models and manageable equations is rather difficult and remains to be improved. Shear transfer problems under cyclic loading and effective compressive strength of cracked concrete have not been adequately investigated and need further systematic research.

This paper presents the results of tests performed on the transfer girders which have been generally used between upper walls and lower frames in the hybrid structures. The 8 specimens were designed using (1) ACI method, (2) strut-tie model, and (3) X-type shear reinforcement cage. The capacities of the specimens are in general larger than the design values except the one designed according to strut-tie model. The reason for this difference seems to be due to the arbitrary allocation of transferred shear force to the path of direct compression strut and the path of indirect strut and tie. The failure modes turn out toe be (1) shear failure at critical shear zone, (2) compressive concrete crushing in the diagonal strut in the shear zone of transfer girder, and (3) compressive concrete crushing in the corner of upper wall.
Machine learning technique is recently opening new opportunities to identify the complex shear transfer mechanisms of reinforced concrete (RC) beam members. This study employed 1224 shear test specimens to train decision tree-based machine learning (ML) programs, by which strong correlations between shear capacity of RC beams and key input parameters were affirmed. In addition, shear contributions of concrete and shear reinforcement (the so-called Vc and Vs) were identified by establishing three independent ML models trained under different strategies with various combinations of datasets. Detailed parametric studies were then conducted by utilizing the well-trained ML models. It appeared that the presence of shear reinforcement can make the predicted shear contribution from concrete in RC beams larger than the pure shear contribution of concrete due to the intervention effect between shear reinforcement and concrete. On the other hand, the size effect also brought a significant impact on the shear contribution of concrete (Vc), whereas, the addition of shear reinforcements can effectively mitigate the size effect. It was also found that concrete tends to be the primary source of shear resistance when shear span-depth ratio a/d<1.0 while shear reinforcements become the primary source of shear resistance when a/d>2.0.
In this paper, hydraulic & thermal developing and fully developed laminar forced convection flow of a water-$Al_2O_3$ nanofluid in a circular horizontal tube with uniform heat flux at the wall, are investigated numerically. A single phase model employed with temperature independent properties. The thermal entrance length is presented in this paper. The variations of the convective heat transfer coefficient and shear stress are shown in the entrance region and fully developed region along different nanoparticles concentration and Reynolds numbers. Convective heat transfer coefficient for nanofluids is larger than that of the base fluid. It is shown that heat transfer is enhanced and shear stress is increased as the particle volume concentration increases. The heat transfer improves, as Reynolds number increases.
