A previously designed capillary viscometer with measuring differential pressure was modified to measure the viscosity of non-Newtonian fluids including unadulterated blood continuously over numerous shear rates in a single measurement. Because of unavoidable experimental noise and a limited number of data, the previous capillary viscometer experienced an inaccuracy and could not directly determine a viscosity without an iterative calculation. However, in the present measurement there are numerous data available near the point of interest so that the numeric value of the derivative, d(In Q)/d(In Q$\sub$w/), is no longer sensitive to the method of differentiation. In addition, relatively low and wide shear rate viscosity measurements were possible because of the present precision pressure-scanning method with respect to time. For aqueous polymer solutions, excellent agreement was found between the results from the pressure-scanning capillary viscometer and those from a commercially available rotating viscometer. In addition, the pressure-scanning capillary viscometer measured the viscosity of unadulterated whole blood without adding any anticoagulants.
Oil viscosity is one of the important parameters for machinery condition monitoring. Basically, it is expressed as kinematic viscosity measured by capillary flow and dynamic or absolute viscosity measured by rotary shear viscometry. Recently, acoustic wave techniques appear in the market, measuring viscosity as the product of dynamic viscosity and density. For Newtonian fluids, knowledge of density allows conversion from one viscosity parameter to the other at a specific shear rate and temperature. In this work, oil samples with different chain lengths of viscosity index (VI) improvers and concentrations were examined by different viscometric techniques. Results showed that acoustic viscosity measurements give misleading results for oil samples with high molecular weight VI improvers and at low temperatures ${\leq}40^{\circ}C$.
The Bair & Winer's limiting shear stress rheological model is incorporated into the Reynolds equation to successfully predict the traction and film thickness for an isothermal line contact using the primary rheological properties. The modified WLF viscosity model and Barus viscosity model are also adapted for the realistic prediction of EHD tractional behavior. The influences of the limiting shear stress and slide-roll ratio on the pressure spike, film thickness, distribution of shear stress and nonlinear variation of traction are examined. A good agreement between the disc machine experiments and numerical traction prediction has been established. The film thickness due to non-Newtonian effects does not deviate significantly from the fdm thicknesss with Newtonian lubricant.
Polypropylene/layered silicate nanocomposites containing maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene were prepared by melt compounding and their rheological behavior was investigated in shear flow. Transient and steady shear flows were simulated numerically by using the K-BKZ integral constitutive equation along with experimentally determined damping functions under dynamic oscillatory and step strain shear flows. Nonlinear shear responses were predicted with the K-BKZ constitutive equation using two different damping functions such as the Wagner and PSM models. It was observed that PP-g-MAH compatibilized PP/layered silicate nanocomposites have stronger and earlier shear thinning and higher steady shear viscosity than pure PP resin or uncompatibilized nanocomposites at low shear rate regions. Strong damping behavior of the PP/layered silicate nanocomposite was predicted under large step shear strain and considered as a result of the strain-induced orientation of the organoclay in the shear flow. Steady shear viscosity of the pure PP and uncompatibilized nanocomposite predicted by the K-BKZ model was in good agreement with the experimental results at all shear rate regions. However, the model was inadequate to predict the steady shear viscosity of PP-g-MAH compatibilized nanocomposites quantitatively because the K-BKZ model overestimates strain-softening damping behavior for PP/layered silicate nanocomposites.
Rheological behavior of commercial hot pepper-soybean paste (HPSP) was evaluated in small amplitude oscillatory and steady shear tests. Storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G"), and complex viscosity (${\eta}^*$) as a function of angular frequency (${\omega}$), and shear stress (${\sigma}$) as a function of shear rate (${\gamma}$) data were obtained for 5 commercial HPSP samples. HPSP samples at $25^{\circ}C$ exhibited a non-Newtonian, shear-thinning flow behavior with high yield stresses and their flow behaviors were described by power law, Casson, and Herschel-Bulkley models. Time-dependent flow properties were also described by the Weltman, Hahn, and Figoni & Shoemaker models. Apparent viscosity over the temperature range of $5-35^{\circ}C$ obeyed the Arrhenius temperature relationship with activation energies (Ea) ranging 18.3-20.1 kJ/mol. Magnitudes of G' and G" increased with an increase in ${\omega}$, while ${\eta}^*$ decreased. G' values were higher than G" over the most of the frequency range (0.63-63 rad/sec), showing that they were frequency dependent. Steady shear viscosity and complex viscosity of the commercial HPSP did not fit the Cox-Merz rule.

Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids change their apparent viscosity according to the electric field strength. Therefore, there are many practical applications using the ER fluids. ER effect on the dispersive system of polarizable fine powder/dielectric oil has been investigated. The electrical and rheological properties of starch based ER fluid were reported. Yield stress of the fluids were measured on the couette cell type rheometer as a function of electric fields, particle concetrations, and temperatures. The electric field is applied by high voltage DC power supply, The outer cup is connected to positive electrode(+) and the bob becomes ground(-). And the temperatures the viscosity(or shear stress) versus shear rates were measured. In this experiment shear rates were increased from 0 to 200s$^{-1}$ in 2 minutes. This thesis presents Bingham properties of ER fluids subjected to temperature variations. The temperature dependence of the viscosity was determined for ER fluids consisting of 35 weight % starch particles in automatic transmission oil.

The suspension of hardened red blood cells (RBCs) differs from the suspension of normal RBCs with respect to their rheological behavior. The deformability of normal and hardened RBCs (obtained by heating blood at $49^{\circ}C$ or by incubating RBCs in a solution of hydrogen peroxide) was measured with a slit diffractometer and RBC suspension viscosity was measured with a rotational viscometer. The peroxide-treated RBCs showed a significant decrease of the deformability and their suspension viscosity increased over a range of shear rates. The suspension viscosity of the heated RBCs, however, where the deformability is even lower than that of the peroxide-treated RBCs, was slightly higher than that of the normal RBC suspension in the high shear rates. The present study found that not all rigid cells cause an increase of blood viscosity at high shear rate, and therefore that decreased membrane deformability is not predictive of high-shear blood viscosity.

We study the rheological properties of concentrated polymer solution and the melt under simple shear and elon-gational flow using Brownian dynamicssimulation. In order to describe the anisotropic molecular motion, we modifiedthe Giesekus' mobility tensor by incorporating the finitely extensible non-linear elastic (FENE) spring force into dumbbell model. To elucidate the nature of this model, our simulation results are compared with the data of FENE-P ("P"standsfor the Perterin) dumbbell model and experiments. While in steady state both original FENE and FENE-P models exhibit a similar viscosity response, the growthof viscosity becomes dissimilar as the anisotropy decreases and the flowrate increases. The steady state viscosity obtained from the simulation well describes the experiments including the shear-thinning behavior in shear flow and viscosity-thinning behavior in elongational flow. But the growth of viscosity oforiginal FENE dumbbell model cannot describe the experimental results in both flow fields.
