The paper presents the method to estimate the bottom shear stress driven by waves and current on rough turbulent flow. Parameter adjusting technique is suggested for the computation of bed shear stress driven by uni-directional flow, and the value ofpararneter is determined by comparing the computational results against Bijker's laboratory data. For the computation of combined flow bottom shear stress, two methods are presented; one is the modified Bijker approach (BYO Model) and the other is the modified Fredsoe approach (FY Model), both of which are refined by the present writers. BYO model is again refined in the computation of maximum shear stress, and the final version is tested against Bijkcr's laboratory data.
Wall shear rate or stress is believed to be a major hemodynamic variable influencing atherosclerosis and artery-graft anastomic intimal hyperplasia. The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of radial wall motion, artery-graft compliance and diameter mismatch, and impedance phase angle on the wall shear rate distribution near an end-to-end artery-graft anastomosis model. The results show that radial wall motion of the elastic artery model lowers the mean wall shear rates under pulsatile flow condition by 15 to 20 % comparing to those under steady flow condition at the same mean flow rate. Impedance phase angle seems to have small effects on the mean and amplitude of the wall shear rate distribution. In order to study the effects of compliance and diameter mismatch on the wall shear rates, two models are studied-Model I has 6% and Model I has 6% and Model II has 11% smaller graft diameter. Divergent geometry caused by diameter mismatch near the distal sites reduces the mean wall shear rates significantly, and this low shear region is believed to be prone to intimal hyperplasia.

Landslides are known as gravitational mass movements that can carry the flow materials ranging in size from clay to boulders. The various types of landslides are differentiated by rate and depositional features. Indeed, flow characteristics are observed from very slow-moving landslides (e.g., mud slide and mud flow) to very fast-moving landslides (e.g., debris avalanches and debris flows). From a geomechanical point of view, shear-rate-dependent shear strength should be examined in landslides. This paper presents the design of advanced ring-shear apparatus to measure the undrained shear strength of debris flow materials in Korea. As updated from conventional ring-shear apparatus, this apparatus can evaluate the shear strength under different conditions of saturation, drainage and consolidation. We also briefly discussed on the ring shear apparatus for enforcing sealing and rotation control. For the materials with sands and gravels, an undrained ring-shear test was carried out simulating the undrained loading process that takes place in the pre-existing slip surface. We have observed typical evolution of shear strength that found in the literature. This paper presents the research background and expected results from the ring-shear apparatus. At high shear speed, a temporary liquefaction and grain-crushing occurred in the sliding zone may take an important role in the long-runout landslide motion. Strength in rheology can be also determined in post-failure dynamics using ring-shear apparatus and be utilized in debris flow mobility.

The effect of intermolecular aggregation induced by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions on shear and elongational flow properties of aqueous acrylic thickener solutions is discussed. Complex shear modulus is determined at frequencies up to $10^4$ rad/s employing oscillatory squeeze flow. Extensional flow behavior is characterized using Capillary Break-up Extensional Rheometry. Aqueous solutions of poly(acrylic acid)(PAA)/poly(vinylpyrrolidone-co-vinylimidazole) (PVP-VI) mixtures exhibit unusual rheological properties described here for the first time. Zero-shear viscosity of the mixtures increases with decreasing pH and can exceed that of the pure polymers in solution by more than two orders of magnitude. This is attributed to the formation of complexes induced by electrostatic interactions in the pH range, where both polymers are oppositely charged. PAA/PVP-VI mixtures are compared to the commercial thickener Sterocoll FD (BASF SE), which is a statistical co-polymer including (meth) acrylic acid and ethylacrylate (EA) forming aggregates in solution due to "sticky" contacts among hydrophobic EA-sequences. PAA/PVP-VI complexes are less compact and more deformable than the hydrophobic Sterocoll FD aggregates. Solutions of PAA/PVP-VI exhibit a higher zero-shear viscosity even at lower molecular weight of the aggregates, but are strongly shear-thinning in contrast to the weakly shear-thinning solutions of Sterocoll FD. The higher ratio of characteristic relaxation times in shear and elongation determined for PAA/PVP-VI compared to Sterocoll FD solutions reflects, that the charge-induced complexes provide a much stronger resistance to extensional flow than the aggregates formed by hydrophobic interactions. This is most likely due to a break-up of the latter in extensional flow, while there is no evidence for a break-up of complexes for PAA/PVP-VI mixtures. These flexible aggregates are more suitable for the stabilization of thin filaments in extensional flows.
There has been considerable interest in recent years in field-responsive suspensions, which are of some importance in industry in many different applications. The microstructure of these materials is a significant issue which can be probed by rheological measurements. In this study, measurements were made of a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) under steady and oscillatory shear flow, with and without a magnetic field. Mathematical inversion was used to derive the relaxation time spectrum of the MRF from oscillatory shear data. Experimental evidence is presented of the gel-like properties of this MRF.
Bovine aortic smooth muscle cells cultured on the slide glass were exposed to sheared flow up to 120 hours in flow chamber to see the effect of shear stress on cell growth in wall shear stresses of 0 to 26dyn/$cm^2$. From lactate dehydrogenase concentration measurement of the circulating medium, it was shown that sheared flow in the shear stress range did not remove additional smooth muscle cells from the slide glass compared with cells in stationary condition. According to smooth muscle cell counting per$cm^2$ of the surface, smooth muscle cells grew fastest in the stationary condition. As the wall shear stress increased, the growth of cells became slower. When the wall shear stress increased over 17dyn/$cm^2$, cell growth was not observed throughout the experiment.
The shear behavior of polymers obtained by means of devices such as capillary and cone-and-plate rheo-meters is commonly used to assess their processing performance and as a characterization tool. However, the number of instances when two polymers have the same shear properties but perform differently during certain types of processing operations (e.g. film blowing and sheet extrusion) indicate that shear properties alone may not be sufficient to characterize polymeric fluids. We begin by defining the kinematics of shear-free or extensional flow and the associated material functions. The extensional and shear behavior of three different types of polyethylene (PE) are then compared to illustrate the points that one cannot ascertain the extensional properties of polymer melts from their shear properties and, furthermore, there may not be a simple relation between properties obtained from one type of extensional flow and those of another type. The kinematics of most processing flows are extensional rather than shear in nature, and , hence, the performance of polymers during processes such as fiber spinning, film casting, film blowing, thermoforming, blow molding, and even extrusion is more readily accounted for through extensional viscosity measurements. Methods for carrying out extensional flow measurements are then reviewed including approximate methods. To illustrate the sensitivity of extensional viscosity measurements to subtle changes in the molecular architecture of PEs, results are presented for samples with a narrow molecular weight distribution but with varying numbers of long chain branches. Finally, constitutive equations which allow one to separate shear and extensional flow behavior are discussed as any attempts to simulate the subtle processing differences between two polymers will require constitutive equations of this nature.
Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the characteristics of flow past a sphere in uniform shear. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=300, 425 and 480 based on the inlet center velocity and sphere diameter. The non-dimensional shear rate K of the inlet uniform shear is varied from 0 to 0.15. At Re=300, the head of the hairpin vortex loop always locates on the high-velocity side in uniform shear, and the flow maintains the planar symmetry. At Re=425 and 480, the irregularity in the location and strength of the hairpin vortex appearing in uniform inlet flow is much reduced in uniform shear, but the flows still keep the asymmetry for most inlet shear rates. However, in the cases of K=0.075 and 0.1 at Re=425, the flows become planar symmetric and their characteristics of the evolution of the hairpin vortex loops are different from those of asymmetric flows. A hysteresis phenomenon switching from the planar symmetry to the asymmetry (or vice versa) depending on the initial condition is also observed at Re=425.
The present study is carried out in order to investigate the effect of the periodic acceleration in the stenosed and bifurcated blood vessels. The blood flow and wall shear stress are changed under body movement or acceleration variation. Numerical studies are performed for various periodic acceleration phase angles, bifurcation angles and section area ratios of inlet and outlet. It is found that blood flow and wall shear stress are changed about ${\pm}20%$ and ${\pm}24%$ as acceleration phase angle variation with the same periodic frequency. also wall shear stress and blood flow rate are decreased as bifurcation angle increased.

This paper reports the numerical results for blood flow of the sac squeezed by moving actuator in the TPLS(Twin Pulse Life Support System). Blood flow in the sac is assumed to be 3-dimensional unsteady newtonian fluid. where the blood flow interacts with the sac, which is activated by the moving actuator. The flow field is simulated numerically by using the FEM code, ADINA. It is well known that hemolysis is closely related to shear stress acted on blood flow. According to this fact, we simulate four models with different speed for moving actuator and examine the distribution of shear stress for each model. Numerical results show that maximum shear stress is strongly dependent on the actuator speed.
