This paper presents the buckling behavior of a pile considering its self-weight. The differential equation and boundary conditions governing the buckling of partially embedded piles in nonhomogeneous soils are derived. The buckling load and mode shape of the pile are numerically computed by the Runge-Kutta method combined with the Regula-Falsi algorithm. The obtained numerical solutions for bucking loads agree well with the results available from the literature. Numerical examples are given to analyze the buckling load and mode shape of the piles as affected by the self-weight, embedment ratio, slenderness ratio and boundary condition of the pile as well as the aspect ratio and rigidity ratio of the subgrade reaction. It is found that the self-weight of the pile leads to the reduction of the buckling load, indicating that neglecting the effect of self-weight may overestimate the buckling load of partially embedded piles.

Embedded piles, which are typically used in Korea, are precast piles inserted into prebored ground with cement paste. Dynamic pile tests tend to underestimate the bearing capacity of embedded piles because of the undeveloped shaft resistance prior to the curing of the cement paste and the insufficient energy transferred after the curing. In this study, a resistance combination method using the base resistance before the cement paste is cured and the shaft resistance after the cement paste is cured is proposed to obtain a combined load-settlement curve from dynamic pile tests. Two pairs of embedded piles with diameters of 600 and 500 mm are installed. Each pair comprises one pile for the dynamic pile test and another pile for the static load test. The shape of the load-settlement curve obtained using the proposed method is similar to that obtained from the static load test. Thus, the resistances evaluated using the proposed method at selected settlements are similar to those obtained from the static load test. This study shows that the resistance combination method may be used effectively in dynamic pile tests to accurately evaluate the bearing capacity of embedded piles.
In recent years, the stability, safety and comfort of trains has received increased attention. The mechanical characteristics and differential settlement of the foundation are the main problems studied in high-speed railway research. The mechanical characteristics and differential settlement of the foundation are greatly affected by the ground treatment. Additionally, the effects of train load and earthquakes have a great impact. The dynamic action of the train will increase the vibration acceleration of the foundation and increase the cumulative deformation, and the earthquake action will affect the stability of the substructure. Earthquakes have an important practical significance for the dynamic analysis of the railway operation stage; therefore, considering the impact of earthquakes on the railway substructure stability has engineering significance. In this paper, finite element model of the CFG (Cement Fly-ash Gravel) pile + cement-soil compacted pile about composite foundation is established, and manual numerical incentive method is selected as the simulation principle. The mechanical characteristics and differential settlement of CFG pile + cement-soil compacted pile about composite foundation under train load are studied. The results show: under the train load, the neutral point of the side friction about CFG pile is located at nearly 7/8 of the pile length; the vertical dynamic stress-time history curves of the cement-soil compacted pile, CFG pile and soil between piles are all regular serrated shape, the vertical dynamic stress of CFG pile changes greatly, but the vertical dynamic stress of cement-soil compacted pile and soil between piles does not change much; the vertical displacement of CFG pile, cement-soil compacted pile and soil between piles change very little.

This paper presents a foundation pile to steel column connection that can resist large magnitude of moment and that can be easy installed. The developed joint has spherical shape and it is given the name HAT joint to mean Hallow half-sphere steel joint. Four types of HAT joints are developed. Namely, H-type, T-type, P-type and K-type. In this paper I will talk about the performance assessment of T-type(Tube Column) and P-type(Pile Column) of HAT joints with finite element analysis and experiment on a full scale model is presented.

The stabbing guide is often used to guide an add-on pile into an existing pile in offshore jacket installation. It provides a pile alignment for a welding tie-in in static condition as well. Even stabbing guide is an essential component in pile installation, it is not considered as a permanent offshore structure. In this regard, there is not a define design guideline proposed. In API RP 2A WSD, it briefly define the design considerations of stabbing guide. The failure of stabbing guide can cause a greate economical loss and a serious impact to the project schedule. Stabbing guide design should consider many factors considering actual work conditions for both static and dynamic situations. In the paper, a design method is proposed by appling the plate theory and it is confirmed numerically with FEM modeling. The geometry of stabbing guide is assumed as a cylinder shape with various wall thickness and effective length. The various thickness, effective length and pile size are compared for stable stabbing guide design.
In this study, we grasped the resistance state of the back ground which had a notable influence on computing the lateral resistance of the laterally loaded single pile in the homogeneous ground by the model test. In order to grasp a resistance behavior, we have to know the deformation area of the back ground and the side failure angle other than the rotation point of pile and vertical failure angle of back ground which were proposed by Bae & Kim in 2008. We found out in this test the characteristics of the behavior of the back ground in accordance with the shape and size of the pile and ground density. We examined the interrelationship of the relative density of sand, the size and the sectional shape of the pile as well.
In this study, a complex behavior connector is proposed to overcome the problems that may occur when small pile pipe and micro pile is used as a friction pile concept in the lower foundation of an oil sand plant where a piloti foundation is used. The individual settlement and heaving of piles were connected in one group to allow the composite behavior. This study performed to analyze the load carrying capacity to identify a complex behavior. In addition, the shape of the composite behavior connector was examined to apply the advantages of pile-group and piled raft foundations to oil sand plants. A scale model was constructed to measure the behavior of the load. The stability and weakness of the device were selected to determine the shape of the connector using the scale model testing.
This study describes a series of model tests on instrumented pile groups embedded in HAP-CHEN sand undergoing lateral movement. We tried to find the effect of group piles dependent on a number of factors, including the position of the pile in a group, the pile spacing, and the pile arrangement. The results of test are as follows. For the group piles, the bending moment profile for each pile is similar in shape to that of single pile, although the magnitude and the position of the maximum bending moment are different. $R_M$ (the ratio of maximum bending moment) and $R_F$ (the ratio of resistance to lateral soil movement) were found to increase with increasing pile spacing. When a pile is in a group under lateral soil movement, RM increased in the order of the middle row, front row, back row, according to the direction of lateral deformation, and the outer pile has a larger RM than the inner pile.
Some methods are presented to estimate the ultimate lateral resistance of single active piles subjected to lateral loads above the ground surface, considering the lateral soil reaction, the pile length and the fixity condition of a pile head. The lateral soil reaction acting on a single active pile embedded in soil due to pile movement can be estimated by use of a theoretical equation which is derived by considering especially the plastic state of ground surrounding the pile and the pile- section shape. The piles are named short or long depending upon the relative magnitude of the induced bending moment to the yielding moment. As for the fixity condition of a pile head, the free head and the unrotated head are considered. Comparison with other experimental results gives that the calculated ultimate lateral resistance obtained by the author's theory is closer to experimental results than the one obtained by Brom's theory.

In this study, estimate solution of ultimate axial capacity for axial loaded pile is proposed using step-wised shape. This is verified for effective appling on realistic factor by calibration chamber tests. Estimation method of ultimate axial capacity in this study is verified by calibration chamber test. The results of ultimate axial capacity through this proposed method have sufficiently low standard derivations and COVs. Also, this is verified through test that method is similarly resulted with measured values.
