Experimental and discrete element methods were used to investigate the effects of angle of Y shape non-persistent joint on the tensile behaviour of joint's bridge area under brazilian test. concrete samples with diameter of 100 mm and thikness of 40 mm were prepared. Within the specimen, two Y shape non-persistent notches were provided. The large notch lengths were 6 cm, 4 cm and 2 cm. the small notch lengths were 3 cm, 2 cm and 1 cm. The angle of larger notch related to horizontal axis was 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°. Totally, 12 different configuration systems were prepared for Y shape non-persistent joints. Also, 18 models with different Y shape non-persistent notch angle and notch length were prepared in numerical model. The large notch lengths were 6 cm, 4 cm and 2 cm. the small notch lengths were 3 cm, 2 cm and 1 cm. The angle of larger notch related to horizontal axis was 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150. Tensile strength of model materil was 1 MPa. The axial load was applied to the model by rate of 0.02 mm/sec. This testing showed that the failure process was mostly governed by the Y shape non-persistent joint angle and joint length. The tensile strengths of the specimens were related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. It was shown that the tensile behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of the induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the joint length and joint angle. The minimum tensile strength occurs when the angle of larger joint related to horizontal axis was 60°. Also, the maximum compressive strength occurs when the angle of larger joint related to horizontal axis was 90°. The tensile strength was decreased by increasing the notch length. The failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both methods i.e. the experimental testing and the numerical simulation methods.
Experimental and numerical simulation were used to investigate the effects of angle and number of T shape non-persistent crack on the shear behaviour of crack's bridge area under uniaxial compressive test. concrete samples with dimension of 150 mm×150 mm×40 mm were prepared. Within the specimen, T shape non-persistent notches were provided. 16 different configuration systems were prepared for T shape non-persistent crack based on two and three cracks. In these configurations, the length of cracks were taken as 4 cm and 2 cm based on the cracks configuration systems. The angle of larger crack related to horizontal axis was 0°, 30°, 60° and 90°. Similar to cracks configuration systems in the experimental tests, 28 models with different T shape non-persistent crack angle were prepared in numerical model. The length of cracks were taken as 4 cm and 2 cm based on the cracks configuration systems. The angle of larger crack related to horizontal axis was 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. Tensile strength of concrete was 1 MPa. The axial load was applied to the model. Displacement loading rate was controlled to 0.005 mm/s. Results indicated that the failure process was significantly controled by the T shape non-persistent crack angle and crack number. The compressive strengths of the specimens were related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. Furthermore, it was shown that the compressive behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of the induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the crack number and crack angle. The strength of samples decreased by increasing the crack number. In addition, the failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both methods i.e. the experimental testing and the numerical simulation methods (PFC2D).
Driving on irregular and inclined roads using agricultural machinery such as spraying machines or trucks in orchards causes farmer casualties associated with the overturning of agricultural machinery. In addition, the harm to agricultural workers caused by the excessive inhalation of the scattered pesticide frequently occurs during pest control processes. To address these problems, we introduced precision agricultural technology that could selectively spray pesticides only where the fruit is present by recognizing the presence or shape of the fruit in the orchard. In this paper, a 16-channel LIDAR (VLP-16) made of Velodyne was used to identify the shape of fruit trees. Solenoid valves were attached to the end parts of 12 nozzles of the orchard spraying machine for on/off control. The smart spraying machine implemented in this way was mounted on a vehicle capable of autonomous travel and performed selective control depending upon the shape of the fruit trees while traveling in the orchards. This is expected to significantly reduce the amounts of pesticides used in orchards and production costs.

Rectangular shape detection plays an important role in many image recognition systems. However, it requires continued research for its improved performance. In this study, we propose a strong rectangular shape detection algorithm, which combines the canny edge and line detection algorithms based on the perpendicularity and parallelism of a rectangle. First, we use the canny edge detection algorithm in order to obtain an image edge map. We then find the edge of the contour by using the connected component and find each edge contour from the edge map by using a DP (douglas-peucker) algorithm, and convert the contour into a polyline segment by using a DP algorithm. Each of the segments is compared with each other to calculate parallelism, whether or not the segment intersects the perpendicularity intersecting corner necessary to detect the rectangular shape. Using the perpendicularity and the parallelism, the four best line segments are selected and whether a determined the rectangular shape about the combination. According to the result of the experiment, the proposed rectangular shape detection algorithm strongly showed the size, location, direction, and color of the various objects. In addition, the proposed algorithm is applied to the license plate detecting and it wants to show the strength of the results.
A shape estimation is needed to control actively a smart structure. A method is, hence, proposed to predict the deformed shape of the structure subjected to unknown external load using the signal from sensors attached to the structure. The shape estimation is based on the relationship between the deformation of the structure and the signal from the sensors. The matrix containing the relationship between the deformation and signal is obtained using fictitious force or eigenvector of global stiffness matrix. Then the deformed shape can be predicted using the linear matrix and signal from sensors attached to the structure. To verify this method, experiment and FEM were performed and it was shown that the shape estimation method based on the fictitious force predicts deflections well and more accurately than that based on eigenvector.
The problem of structural topology optimization can be relaxed and converted into the optimal density distribution problem. The optimal density distribution must be post-processed to get the real shape of the structure. The extracted shape can then be used for the next process, which is usually shape optmization based on the boundary movement method. In the practical point of view, it is very important to get the optimal density distribution from which the corresponding shape can easily be extracted. Among many other factors, the presence of checker-board patterns is a powerful barrier for the shape extraction job. The nature of checker-board patterns seems to be a numerical locking. In this paper, an efficient algorithm is presented to suppress the checker-board patterns. At each iteration, density is re-distributed after it is updated according to the optimization rule. The algorithm also results in the optimal density distribution whose corresponding shape has smooth boundary. Some examples are presented to show the performance of the density re-distribution algorithm. Checker-board patterns are successfully suppressed and the resulting shapes are considered very satisfactory.

This paper deals with the development of a realistic shape optimization of damaged columns that are subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces, using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The analysis is based on the design of the most optimized shape of the column under the constraint of constant weight, considering the Static, Vibrational, and Flutter characteristics. Under the action of conservative and non-conservative longitudinal forces, an elastic column loses its stability. A numerical analysis based on FEM has been performed on a uniform damaged column, to compute the fundamental buckling load, vibration frequency, and flutter load, under various end restraints. An optimization search based on the Genetic Algorithm is then executed, to find the optimal shape design of the column. The optimized column references the one having the highest buckling load, highest vibration frequency, and highest flutter load, among all the possible shapes of the column, for a given volume. A comparison is then made between the values obtained for the optimized damaged column, and those obtained for the optimized undamaged column. The comparison reveals that the incorporation of damage in the column alters its optimal shape to only a certain extent. Also, the critical load and frequency values for the optimized damaged column are comparatively low, compared with those obtained for the optimized undamaged column. However, these results hold true only for moderate-intensity damage cases. For high intensity damage, the optimal shape may not remain the same, and may vary, according to the severity of damage.
In this paper, for recognize a night pedestrian from an infrared video, a new method differentiated from the existing feature vector is proposed and experimented. The new approach focuses on the shape feature vector of the structure and shape of the pedestrian image divided by the human body seven split ratio. The pedestrian images are divided into 7 square blocks from the still image of the preprocessing process. And to reduce the dimension, the square block is converted into a mosaic block. The scalar and direction of the shape feature vector is calculated by the brightness and position of the element in the mosaic. For practicality of infrared video system, the proposed method simplifies the data to be processed by reducing the amount of data in the preprocessing in order to continuously batch process the entire system in real time. Through the experiments, we verified the validity of the proposed shape feature vector. In comparison to the existing method, we propose a new shape feature vector generation method as the feature vector for night pedestrian recognition.
In this paper, a shape optimization technique is applied to design of an air-conditioner mounting bracket. The mounting bracket is a structural component of an engine, on which bolts attach an air-conditioner compressor. The air-conditioner mounting bracket has a large portion of weight among the engine components. To reduce weight of the bracket, the shape is optimized using a finite element software. The compressor assembly, composed of a compressor and a bracket is modeled using finite elements. An objective function for the shape optimization of the bracket is the weight of the bracket. Two design constraints on the bracket are the first resonant frequency of the compressor assembly and the fatigue life of the bracket. The design variables are the shape of the bracket including thickness profiles of the front and back surfaces of the bracket, radius of outer bolt-holes, and side edge profiles. The coordinates of the FE nodes control the shape parameters. Optimal shapes of the bracket are obtained by using SOL200 of MSC/NASTRAN.
The various model tests are carried out to estimate and verify a ship performance in the design stage. But in view of the cost, the model test should be applied to every project vessel is very inefficient. Therefore, other methods of predicting the maneuverability with confined data are required at the initial design stage. The purpose of this study is to estimate the hydrodynamic derivatives by using the multiple regression analysis and PMM test data. The characteristics of the stern shape which has an important effect on the maneuverability are applied to the regression analysis in this study. The correlation analysis is performed to select the proper hull form coefficients and stern shape factors used as the variables in the regression analysis. The comparative analysis of estimate results and model test results is conducted on two ships to investigate the effectiveness of the maneuvering hydrodynamic derivatives estimation applied the stern shape. Through the present study, it is verified that the estimation using the stern shape factors as the variables are valid when the stern shape factors are located in the center of the database.
